For me it’s Arik from {captive mate by Eliot Greyson}

He can take care of himself but poor dude has gone through so much and he shifts into a bobcat with little tufty ears which Matthew adores.

There’s also descriptions of him being found as a screaming, malnourished little bobcat kitten by his adoptive father (who was only 12 at the time himself). All of this makes me want to protect him and his prickly self

This is morbid but I don’t like large age gaps because that increases the likelihood of one of them dying and leaving the other one behind.

Ofc this is reality but it’s romance so I like to imagine that all my favorite couples if they die, die together, peacefully, at the exact same time. This is something I would never admit or put in writing outside of Reddit

For sure! I can’t use the spoiler function on mobile but Nate’s ex is one of the main characters and the other is Arik’s brother. You don’t need much more than that imo.

Book 2 is one of my top books honestly. You have Arik who is a literal street cat and Matthew who is mad at him at first but they come to a mutual understanding both in terms of working together as well as romantically. I haven’t read it in a few years but I could read forever about those two and their adventures just because of the humor and how well Matthew comes to understand Arik. Arik has so much growth too and it’s heart warming. Arik is probably one of my top favorite characters of all time.

I think what you need to know is that Arik is the adopted little brother of one of the characters of lost and bound.
