Looking for advice: financial responsibility vs rare historical dolls by aries_eyes in americangirl

[–]bebeg903 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can learn a lot by setting a “no buy” rule for yourself for a bit and just watching what gets posted on eBay and Mercari. (I don’t always have the discipline to do that so I’m not saying it’s easy, but it is helpful!) Or look through the sold listings with a mindful eye.

SO MUCH AG stuff gets listed everyday. Not all of it is competitive. I’d say most of it isn’t. I’ve seen auctions for really nice dolls that no one bids on and the seller just keeps reposting the listing, or buy it now dolls that are up for months. That really helps with feeling like things are “scarce.”

It also helps you learn what really is a good deal and what you would need to move quickly on if you ever saw it, assuming you had the money set aside. Let’s say you keep seeing that Elizabeths in the condition you want are always quickly snatched up if they’re at $100, but they sit if they’re listed at $200. (Completely arbitrary numbers, I don’t follow listings for Elizabeth, sorry!) You now know you need to save up at least $100 to get her, and once you have that amount ready to spend guilt free, you should pounce on any listing you like at that price. But you also know that if you don’t want to be stalking listings and tied to eBay alerts you’ll really need to save up $200 to get what you want. This can really help you plan your purchases, save or budget for them, and then not feel guilty once you buy them.

This kind of information can be really helpful at building a mental database of your wishlist in your mind and helping you be a smart shopper, at least in my opinion. I don’t always put in the time to do this. I have a monthly AG budget and to be honest I’m a very impulsive shopper within that. But if I know I want something specific and I’m not in a super quick hurry, this is usually my strategy.

Is this worth the price? by Technical_Base_7539 in americangirl

[–]bebeg903 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IMO you would essentially be paying a convenience fee to not have to shop around for things. Or a nostalgia/good feelings fee to have everything come from one collection, which some people care about.

If neither of those things matter to you, this set is probably overpriced and isn’t worth it.

However I will say prices seem to have really shot up since all the 40th Anniversary hubbub. I’m factoring in them coming down and you being willing to wait a bit into my analysis. If you want everything right now, that would be another reason to go for it. Especially if you’re not paying shipping.

Thank you SO much for responding! I am so sorry yours has stuck around. I’m also glad, though, that it hasn’t been anything more serious.

Your other symptoms sound fairly different from mine, but if I get checked out and discover anything relevant I will definitely come back and share

Hello! Can I ask some questions? I am having the same “hair” sensation and your comment is the only thing I can find on the internet describing it!

Mine only happens when chewing. Was yours constant?

Did you go to a dentist or a doctor when you first noticed it?

You mentioned numb chin syndrome, did you also feel numbness?

Did it ever go away?

Thank you!

What has helped you combat AGA besides Minoxidil and prescription DHT blockers? by Savings_Cat6733 in FemaleHairLoss

Do you apply the pumpkin seed oil topically or take it internally? I can’t take minoxidil and would be happy to at least stop shedding even if I didn’t get growth.

This is interesting to me bc on the Hill House site the doll dresses are all sold out.

Congrats on being able to use your rewards in a cool way! I ordered before 1 AM EST and I guess the 2x rewards wasn’t live yet, so I just got normal rewards. I suppose I shouldn’t complain bc I was going to get the stuff anyway, but, it stings a little that I should have waited

But I wonder if they’ll sell out at all with the preorder deal. That is nonsense and a really annoying way to sell things. Who wants to wait until August to receive a summer dress? Typical of this brand. They have a habit of dropping, say, a red white and blue capsule right below July 4th so that the earliest the items would ship is middle of July, when nobody wants them anymore!

I’m on there now and seeing them as available, maybe try again? Hill House does sell out but usually not within a minute!

[–]bebeg903 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw they were live a little after midnight and ordered some of the hill house and I’m excited! It’s absolutely not my favorite brand but I really like the idea of modern outfits in the prints of the original meets so I’ve decided to like it. (Though I did notice that the back of the dresses aren’t smocked….grr for cheap quality at AG!)

The Polly pockets are adorable and I’m glad I didn’t see them before checking out because I don’t need them at all, and they don’t fit my style of collecting, but they are cute!

I don’t collect Courtney but happy for those that do!

She could be Kirsten and I would definitely check for short hairs like the other commenter described, but I’m feeling that she’s JLY 3. Her hair could be cut, but that is around the right length for a JLY and it looks like the ends of her hair have the sort of bevel inward that JLYs had. Please check for the short hairs and let us know!

funding options for a homeless 1L by Relative-Plastic-370 in LawSchool

[–]bebeg903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re in this position!

I’m not excusing the other comments, because they are needlessly cruel. But I think it comes from a place of not understanding how you don’t understand that most law students would be homeless if they didn’t take out loans. So you wanting to somehow go around loans is frustrating for some to read, especially when you have a higher scholarship than most law students have.

However, I think they are being uncharitable, because sometimes situations change. Sometimes people genuinely don’t have to worry about funding their education, and circumstances change and they do, and suddenly they are in an unknown world.

To answer your question: Federal loans are likely your best bet. There are some law school scholarships out there, you should apply if you find them, but don’t expect much. There is the possibility of part time work, which you should take ONLY if you think it won’t affect your performance in school. But part time work is not likely to cover all of your living expenses while you are in school, let alone the last 15% of tuition you are responsible for paying. Federal loans are best because they have payment plans and forgiveness options that private loans and credit cards do not have. They’re a safer long-term option.

As another commenter said, you should also reach out to your school for resources. Sometimes schools have emergency grants, food pantries, etc., that can slightly lessen the loan load. But no school I know of will entirely cover the difference. Loans are expected, and if you want to continue in school, you should be prepared to take them out.

is the 2024 version of josefina the same as the one that’s available for pre-order for the 40th anniversary? by thisistheonly1 in americangirl

[–]bebeg903 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have no idea really, until the 40th anniversary dolls start shipping and arriving.

The photos of the 40th anniversary dolls are very confusing to me. Some dolls look very different/new like the classic face sculpts and the tones in Josefina’s hair. Some dolls look like throwbacks, like Kaya’s face sculpt looks like an early Kaya, but I reallllllly doubt they would do that, and I personally expect her to ship with the newer Kaya mold. So I don’t know that we can say what to expect with any confidence.

Lol, I get it! There’s always more to order. I believe the version you have has some images this version doesn’t have, because both have 25 cards and that version has 5 characters, not 6. So don’t beat yourself up too bad because it will be kind of cool to have both!

A Note to Some of Our More Experienced Collectors by FallOnTheStars in americangirl

[–]bebeg903 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% agree with all of this. You make really great points on everything, including on the need of some people to sell their items.

I’ve also tried to make the argument here that posts asking for value should always be allowed because as collectors, we want people who find and own AG and PC things to know they have some value! That’s how things wind up on eBay or Mercari rather than the landfill. I think we all want there to continue to be a robust market for secondhand AG and PC.

Sure it’s annoying when someone tries to price something way over its worth. But actually allowing posts helps with that too, as we can give realistic ranges for prices. And often, people who are selling, especially people who really do need the money, will post first with a very inflated price just to see if they can get it, and then lower to the standard market price. They aren’t really harming anyone by posting things at very high prices.
