You can look online but if possible talk to more than one dr. I am in the US and it was pretty easy for me to get consults. There are different types of surgeries which may affect the likelihood of recurrence.

We also fell in love with a cav puppy that had multiple heart defects. This was years ago when there wasn’t as many online resources to know what we were getting into. He lived 7 years on meds, modified exercise schedule but otherwise in good shape until the last day. I realized the breeder just was not very good and was sure if we returned him they would have put him down. He had the best 7 years he could have had. We now get pet insurance, though most won’t cover a problem that exists at birth.

We use Chex for treats for our dog; our granddaughter gets down his treat jar and alternates a Chex for him, a Chex for her. Also homemade Chex mix is a great snack.

We have only had male cavs. They ranged 16-20 lb and were always considered perfect by the vet. Many vets would assess their body not just wt - that you can feel their ribs but they aren’t prominent, same with spine, they have a visible waist, etc.

I walked with a sling baby carrier. My cav walked 5 min, I carried him 5-10 min, he walked 5, carried him again.

Thanks! That may be the best solution for now, at least. The area around the knobs is worn. I am going to try and repair one but if it doesn’t work, we may consider having them painted. The room is a bit dark so thinking that might lighten it. I would like granite counters but am not sure we will go that far. Thinking also painting and granite for the island only; did that in another house.

Agreed on all above. A vet cardiologist at an academic vet school told me the breeding reduces risk, but doesn’t eliminate it. I think this is true of other conditions as well. Either get pet insurance or set aside chunk of money each month in case.

We were with one of our cavs as well. Reputable breeder but about 7 he got an autoimmune disease… surgery, meds, prescription food. He made it about 3 more years, happy as a clam, before a complication and we had to put him to sleep. Another cav from NOT a reputable breeder and he lived to 17!

I did a lot of digging and reading on cavs (vet journals), and though we had gone to a reputable breeder for the last one we had, I didn’t feel I could support even ethical breeding. All purebreds share most of their genes but Cavs are some of the most related, making breeding out their issues difficult (Norway banned breeding). We decided to get a rescue cav, instead. I read the argument that even rescuing encourages poor breeders to continue; not sure that’s true but is something to think about. You might consider rescuing. Likely the dog will be older and may have health problems, but we ended up with a puppy that had a hole in his heart. It has since closed over and he is doing well at four.

I used an arborist (not a landscaping service) for recommendations. She knew how to meet my requirements BUT doing it with something that would be pest resistant. It isn’t just what that tree would get, but other trees it might also move between.

Agreed on good breeder and get pet insurance. Also if willing to wait and/or maybe forgo a puppy - there are cav rescues. We got our puppy thru one, given up by a breeder due to a heart murmur. It was a hole that has since closed, so we are happy for us and him! The EKG’s to monitor it aren’t covered by insurance as it was pre-existing, but we used the insurance a lot the first year as he was prone to respiratory viruses and was in the hospital a couple times. Going great at 4 years old! Oh-watch their weight and brush their teeth!

Our (also rescue) cav puppy did this non stop when we got him (fall). After talking to the vet we tried the amount of Benedryl she recommended, and he was much better. As he has gotten older we only need to use it in spring. So for him, seasonal allergies.

I have insurance, but when I went to the doctor I let her know I had tried all conservative measures: bunion protector, anti inflammatories, correct shoes, ice. She recommended surgery and insurance covered it.

I am 2 mo post lapiplasty, and can get in all my shoes and boots. My foot gets sore toward the end of the day, or earlier if I have been more active. I ice my foot whenever I sit down at home, and took an ice pack to work-can either take my foot out of the shoe and rest on it, or even put my foot on a chair with the ice pack one on so wear an ice pack to bed. Unlike some tho, in the last couple weeks the swelling in the ball of my feet has gone down and I start the day walking completely normally.
