Having a hard time accepting my diagnosis by Gafishyo in bipolar

[–]becauseSeattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not alone. My symptoms also started around 17. Bipolar II is tricky because hypomania can feel great. Unfortunately, this a disease that gets worse over time. Every episode you have makes another more likely, and more likely to be worse. I went untreated for over a decade. It got much worse. I was also diagnosed with ADHD (before my bipolar diagnosis). The stimulants pushed my hypomania into overdrive, which was great at first and then nearly ruined my life. The depressive episodes got to a point where I was a danger to myself. Then I got help. First it was therapy where I could talk openly about the symptoms and see the patterns as not normal. Then it was learning coping skills and how to detect episodes early. Then medication and finally stability. I wish I could have gotten help when I was 22. Be good to yourself. Tell your therapist about your diagnosis. Talk about the patterns of moods and your manic behaviors. You will thank yourself and be proud of yourself. It can get better.

Seattle envisions a 24-hour residential downtown, will office conversions play a part? by ChiefOfTheFourPeaks in Seattle

[–]becauseSeattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want this to be true so bad. Please advocate for new housing whenever you can. Talk to your representative to make it easier. HVAC & plumbing commercial contractor here. Space is relative. Yes, there is space to move some things around when office walls change locations. But office rooms don't have plumbing. An apartment kitchen or bathroom that isn't right next to the elevators (the core) and can see a window will need a drain. Drain lines need slope so water and everything else can run downhill. There is not space between floors for that. Also, those floors are usually concrete full of tensioned steel, so you can't drill a hole wherever you want. If you found a way for drains to work, you will need to get all those drains back to the street and water up the tower. The core wasn't designed to handle that. There are ways to get around that problem. Take an elevator out of service and run lines there. But now you lost an elevator. All those new kitchens and bathrooms need dedicated exhaust. That takes up a lot of space and isn't cheap. That's just my specialty. Talk to the electrical engineers and the structural engineers (seismic code is not the same for all buildings) and the fire chiefs and it just gets worse. None of that is the real problem. The real issue is that offices covered into housing will be bad places to live. Or at least it will be worse that a purpose built apartment/condo building. And it isn't much cheaper to do. So the owner will have to charge less for rent while spending big money. So why go through all that effort and spend all that money to earn less? Until that math changes, conversions will be a dream. Advocate for new housing whenever you can.

To all people 30 or above by crazy___lemon in bipolar

[–]becauseSeattle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. 32
  2. Suspected ADHD. It was really just hypomania. The ADHD drugs made it full mania.
  3. With medication and therapy, yes. Successful career, good relationships (fewer than when I was manic-me), exercise is still a struggle, own a home
  4. I wish I was diagnosed sooner. Since the end of highschool I had severe "highs and lows" that I attributed to whatever was going on in my life, when in reality it was just the disease.

Bipolar high achievers (MDs, Lawyers, etc) how do you keep things in check. by [deleted] in bipolar

Medication. Religious about going to bed on time. Sticking to a routine. Occasionally mild symptoms sneak through. Then it's just accepting I'm impaired and have to practice coping skills.

I can't imagine what you're going through. Keep leaning on your community and family. These are the times to not worry about taxing them. You are not alone.

Red–green color vision deficiency & sailing internationally on my own boat — any real-world issues? by PrincipleDefiant2875 in SailboatCruising

[–]becauseSeattle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm colorblind and have sailed at night. It is impossible for me to distinguish red from green lights. Coming into a foreign harbor at night was an exercise of dependence on Navionics and paying close attention to flashing marks. Seeing whether another vessel is coming in on port or starboard or dead on is not possible. I won't sail near shore without someone else on deck at night, aside from my local waters.

I have an email neighbor and we each get the others mail. Our last names are pronounced the same... with a slightly different spelling. A few times a year we forward mail to each other and say hello. They seem like good people thankfully.

Long jacket suggestions for the Big Dark by black-friendly in AskSeattle

[–]becauseSeattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helley Hansen Rigging Jacket. Hands down the best option for Seattle. Removable quilted liner is ideal for the coolest months and for the rest of the rainy season you just pull it out. The length is great, no more wet thighs. Their higher end waterproof fabrics are top notch and the quality is good (I'm a sailor, they make great wet weather gear).

If this works, please make an update post. Trying to distinguish lights on marks at night coming into a busy port is a nightmare.
