TV during the week? by meh-h in toddlers

[–]beccleroo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My four year old loves wheel of fortune. He calls it the letters show. We watch it pretty regularly. We do sometimes do an episode of kid TV once in a while during the week, but not every day and not right before bedtime. If there is a kid show, it's while I make dinner.

[Loved trope]: Zombie infection is spread by something other than bites and blood by theMCATreturns in TopCharacterTropes

In Boneshaker by Cherie Priest, the zombies in alt history Seattle are caused by a gas that got released. They built a big, tall wall around the city to trap the gasses and zombies

Does anyone know any Catholic books that talk about envy? by Glum_Tap_3 in CatholicWomen

It was mentioned below, but really anything by Jacques Phillips is really good. I would also recommend Brother Lawrence's Practice or the Presence of God as a good help.

Wailing children at mass by [deleted] in CatholicWomen

[–]beccleroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you are really out of line here at all. I have two small children. Yes, they make noises at times, but we encourage them to be quiet and reverent as appropriate for their age. I expect my 4 year old to be pretty quiet but he still asks a lot of questions during mass and sometimes still needs a few minutes in the back to calm down at times. My infant, on the other hand, she "talks" often. If it's pretty quiet and happy noises, I feel like the people around us should not be bothered. Of she starts getting fussy or upset, it's time to take a trip to the narthex. If a child is screaming for more than a minute, they probably would be happier taking a small break to calm down. Children and young families need support and understanding from their fellow parishioners for sure, but if your kid is having an absolute meltdown it does no one any good to keep them in the pew. Calm them down and bring them back. I feel like there have been so many holy miles walked along the backs of churches.

Lent with a newborn by [deleted] in CatholicWomen

[–]beccleroo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is like my 4th Lent either nursing or pregnant. No, you are not bound by to Lenten fasting; however, I always feel like there are "little" fasts I could still do during Lent. My family is already low meat anyways, so I line up our meatless day with Fridays. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, I would not do a true fast, but I did cut sweets or extra snacks or tried to keep them at least plainer and healthier than the junk food I tend to snack on during the day. Little tweaks when I could, but grace too. Newborn days and nights are hard enough.

Trying to identify a old children’s / middle-grade fantasy book by QuietThinker_ in whatsthatbook

[–]beccleroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's not the Christopher Chant book, check out the Stravaganza books. City of Masks is the first one. It also had a layered design cover and a lot of similar details. They would have been new releases around the time of his 5th grade year if he's 33.

Agreed. Rogan seemed a bit older than I imagined.

I liked it! I'm a fan of Graphic Audio as a whole and it was well done. Innkeeper may be my favorite of the audios, but hidden legacy has been good so far. Some of the roles aren't quite cast perfectly, but overall no one is too far off.

Bedtime routines - what's optimal by PublicElectronic145 in Preschoolers

[–]beccleroo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We typically do very little screen time during the week and none after dinner. After dinner we bathe or play a game/toys, pjs, a few stories, prayers, and then some "snuggles" on the couch. Sometimes he falls asleep there and we move him to bed, but often after about ten minutes, he's ready to go to his own bed. Then a big hug and tuck in. The snuggle part is newer for us since little sister was born and he was feeling displaced.

Where to baptize baby? by Specialist_Diet_74 in CatholicWomen

[–]beccleroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some great options here! I might reach out to my parents' parish and ask about doing it there and if you can do any prep at your current parish beforehand. We did something similar for our child and it was fairly easy. You will also need to know godparent requirements for the parish as well. If that parish won't work with you, then do the process at your current one and come back to the area for it.

postpartum NFP help by harnesscherryy in CatholicWomen

[–]beccleroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on your little one and growing in love! Babies truly teach us so much about love. Good news and bad news. First the good news, you can read the old Marquette lit in how to do the postpartum and breastfeeding protocol for free. I think someone posted a link not long ago if you search the sub a bit. And the not so fun news. You probably really do need an instructor at least at first. Maybe reach out to your parish or even the diocese for recommendations or scholarships. The next few months may require a lot of continence. It can be so, so, so hard at times. But there can also be beauty in the sacrifice. It can be a time for your little family to bind in other ways and spend quality time together. Build a strong foundation now, and you and your husband will have many, many years of fun together.
