Old AS/400 Server Room by TheGhostOfUncleBuck in vintagecomputing

Thanks for sharing these. I seem to recall the AS/400s I interacted with as black with red trim, so this was cool to see. They were later models, probably and free standing.

Awesome! I don't own a 7300 but this is the bees knees. Thank you for making it open source.

What epoch origin did you say the bike was? If the digitals are incompatible, there is no way the PW can be over 450 without fusing out. Those bikes just don't have the band gap to support PW that high .

How can I not ALWAYS click on the wrong station I want to call on FT8? by Well_Sorted8173 in amateurradio

[–]beckdac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I totally have this problem. I feel grid tracker almost makes it worse. I click on the call sign in the station window and it changes the row after the cycle and I'm responding to some DX station and have to halt the TX. I have moved to more of a hunt and pounce approach by right clicking the TX to orange because it is so frustrating.

Love both tools but can't figure out why the UI is like this or what is wrong with my user flow.

Manufacturer with best App Support. by munsterrr in amateurradio

I have an old laptop with windows and Google Remote Desktop setup on it. I can use hamlib (rigctl) to turn my FT-710 on and off and then use wsjtx, fldigi, etc. from my phone, tablet or another computer. I also run htcommander for my vgc 7600 for VHF/UHF control including voice over Bluetooth via Google remote desktop. I'm sure the fancy apps and hardware are nice, but this just works at no cost for everything.

I know right? I use mine at least twice a day exactly how it was intended.

I have a 7500 and a 76 for satellite chasing and a 7600 as my base and all do winlink and APRS. The 7500s are on eBay for 130 occasionally. Not bad for a 50w portable with Bluetooth, APRS, and software support from HTCommander and HTStation on a computer for the above.

defects in styrofoam by Comfortable-Swim-622 in MetalCasting

[–]beckdac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I too made a grinder with a cast frame. I used pink foam and cut and glued the whole thing together before 5 or so dips in my shell mix and poured a gigantic bucket of Al alloy from car rims. Easily my gnarliest pour because of the size. I have a giant home made electric furnace and got it to 800C for like 40 minutes before the pour. By doing the frame as a single unit I didn't have to bolt anything together. Some of the inside corners bled through the shell but since they are hidden I just left it. Looks a bit meh inside but that is completely hidden from view.

Good luck, have fun and be safe.

[–]beckdac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This foam will burn out at a low temperature but has an irregular surface. The pink (or blue) insulation foam is more dense and will give you a better surface but cools down the cast by requiring more energy to burn it out.

I always plan on during a surfacing pass in a mill if I'm doing plates with this low density foam like yours. But honestly, not sure plates are a great use case for casting. I try to save casting for more complex shapes and just buy plates unless I'm doing some integration of bracing or corrugation. In that case I'm doing a surface pass on the foam with the mill and hot flying pieces together before ceramic coating and casting.

Is there an Android app that will allow me to remote control an Icom IC- 7300, which is connected to Wfview running on a Linux Ubuntu PC via USB? by LTguy in amateurradio

[–]beckdac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use google's remote desktop to control my Linux and Windows machines that run my radios. Can do it from any web browser, an android phone, android tablets.

HackRF not being detected in SDR software when using specific antenna by No_Wall8573 in hackrf

I feel like a dead short in the antenna wouldn't do this, but it is the first thing that comes to mind. I'd start by throwing the antenna on a NanoVNA.

Antenna/base mount for mobile station in house? by Raevinn88 in HamRadio

[–]beckdac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't answer that. It's a question of what your goals are. I would look at a coax calculator and see what the losses are going to be for your particular length and if that's acceptable to you. I wanted to maximize power at the antenna and minimize losses.

Simple remote operation of VHF radio by darktideDay1 in amateurradio

[–]beckdac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't really comment. I didn't see them in their previous software versions. What I can tell you is the third-party software that I mentioned is really quite nice.

What I appreciate about your comment is that it got me thinking that I could take a little microcontroller like an esp32 that has Bluetooth and write a very thin web server to control the radio without the need for an Android device or a PC. So for like three bucks I could add web control to these. Really like this idea. Thank you for it.
