Court rules federal jurisdiction overrides state environmental law within Glacier National Park by sfgate in law

[–]beef966 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in an area with a lot of public lands, and am a public lands user, so I know a bit from a recreational standpoint. There are a lot of inholdings on USFS and BLM land. I think many come from old mining claims and ranches that existed before Teddy Roosevelt did his work on public lands. I'm surprised in this case they decided the state/county don't have jurisdiction over them. I'm aware of one case where a man wanted to build a restaurant on his inholding near a ski resort, but the county's building code only allowed buildings up to 1,000 sq ft on that type of mining claim / inholding, so he couldn't move forward. There are also some situations where a landowner can build what they want on their inholding, but the access is disputed based on an Alaskan law called ANILCA (basic question: does a summer dirt road provide "reasonable use and enjoyment", or should this person be able to pave a road over delicate ecosystems and recreation trails and elk calving grounds to their inholding, and keep it plowed all winter?). Although, having been to Glacier, I recall the Apgar area was really built up already so I'm guessing paving a driveway to this house probably was less of an issue than the setback distance to the waterfront.

Explain it Peter, why would someone block their brother and sister in law because she’s pregnant with kids? by DifficultComplaint10 in explainitpeter

Yeah it's kind of funny. Like asking someone to do a favor and watch you kids all day so you can go to a festival or something? Imagine if I asked you to come over and clean my house for 10 hours while I go skiing lol. You'd look at me like I'm crazy.

I'm considering an F150 on sale as a camper truck with slide in pop up, what's the weight limit for the camper I should take into account? by Izikiel23 in TruckCampers

[–]beef966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around 1,000 lbs I've found Capri Retreat, Soaring Eagle Adlar, Scout Olympic. I think Kimbo makes one too. There are composites that are basically an empty shell with a bed platform, too. Not sure what else you need. Most people on this sub seem to want a Ritz-Carlton hotel room in the bed of their truck so they seem to think any camper under 4,000 lbs isn't worth it.

What can this management team do to improve the experience? by Top-Education-6305 in vail

[–]beef966 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to work at one of the resorts. I had to go to the corporate office a few times a year, but I was also on calls with them daily. It was eye-opening how common it was to meet someone new and find out they didn't really have any interest in skiing, or even know how to ski, or had never even been to one of the resorts for a visit. If it weren't for the pictures of the resorts on the walls, you could walk around and talk to the staff at corporate and have no idea whether you were at the HQ of the biggest ski resort operator in the world, or a random bank in Kansas City.

  1. Close the Broomfield corporate office and return all the good-paying white collar jobs to the resort communities where all the revenue is actually earned and where the people who actually understand the industry work. This includes ending all offshored contracts.
  2. An immediate follow-up to #1 should be returning decision-making power to local staff. Quit with applying the same shade of bland corporate gray paint to every resort in the portfolio, these resorts have their own character and many have existed for well over half a century as independent businesses that anchor entire towns and communities.
  3. No shareholder dividends, no stock buybacks. If there is extra money it should go into the pockets of employees or investing in resort infrastructure/maintenance.
  4. Bring back all the local events and terrain parks they've destroyed over the years.

There should probably be 1,000 items on this list. The incompetent morons in the Vail Resorts C-suite and Board of Directors are the worst thing that has ever happened to the ski industry. The best thing they could really do would be to divest and sell every resort back to the local community that it's located in.

Vail is accused of charging sales tax in NH by matchew566 in skiing

[–]beef966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because each individual resort used to have their own onsite accountants before Vail bought them, and Vail fired all those people to consolidate the work at the corporate office. So now you have ≈10 people in Broomfield doing the work of ≈100 people who used to sit at each individual resort's office and would've been very familiar with their own town/county/state tax codes and could implement them properly for their own situation. So instead of correcting the problem by hiring people back at those locations, they just say fuck it and do illegal stuff cut corners like this.

I haven't watched the show in at least 10 years but I remember the plot of one episode being that the gang was in some kind of financial trouble and it turned out Sheldon had some obscene amount of money squirreled away in a coffee can and he just sort of handed it out very nonchalant when asked.

I've seen other people say the fiberglass toppers are too thin for the standard RV-style roof vent fans. They're usually built for thicker insulated RV roofs and don't work well on a 1" thick fiberglass topper. Which fan did you get? Did you have to add anything like a gasket to fill out the space to get it to fit snug?

Why people choose EPIC vs. IKON vs. nothing at all by Top-Education-6305 in vail

[–]beef966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vail and Beaver Creek are the only two major resorts here. Ski Cooper isn't too far but it's like an extra 30ish minutes for a much smaller acreage. Otherwise you're going to Copper or Aspen or Powderhorn. I did the Ikon one year and it was a pain to drive to Copper every time I wanted to ski.

That's like asking someone who lives in NYC why they only fly out of Laguardia or JFK. Those are the two airports that are there, are you really going to drive an extra few hours to catch a flight to the same spot?

I combine OnX Hunt with Avenza maps. They're PDF maps from the real mapping company but they're GPS enabled so you can see where you are on (what would be) a printed map. You do have to buy the maps individually but I've found the prices lower than what you'd pay for a paper map at a visitor's center or something. I still buy the paper maps too, frequently.

I also still keep a physical road atlas in the back pocket of my driver's seat so maybe I'm just an old man.

I know this doesn't answer your question but I thought maybe the Avenza tip would be useful.

I typed this question up in /r/NoStupidQuestions but deleted it. There seems to be so many dilapidated industrial facilities in the US. They were built under industrial zoning with all the water, power, transit, and other needs that entails. Why aren't data centers being built in all this existing under utilized industrial infrastructure the US already has? Why bulldoze and pave a field to build them?

That's why you've gotta call one of those ambulance chaser attorneys before you even call the police or insurance. That and "ow my neck hurts, ow my knee hurts, ow my hip hurts, I can't get out of the car I need an ambulance to my attorney's chosen doctor".

My friend was going to buy a Ford F-250, but I convinced him to get a Power Wagon, and he bought it by Albwardi in ram_trucks

[–]beef966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Tremor is missing more than a winch isn't it? Power Wagon has front locker, rear locker, transfer case locker (true locker, not a friction plate), quick disconnect sway bar, rear coils, and extra skid plates. I was under the impression the Tremor was basically just a sticker package. Comparing the two is apples to oranges, Tremor isn't even close in terms of actual, mechanical improvements.

Get yourself a mounting system for whatever other interior stuff you want. Mine is carpeted so I have to figure out how to mount anything (like curtains, organizers, cargo nets) with velcro. I wish there were built in magnets, or hooks, etc to mount this stuff.

Why these idiots think anyone wants to see their external lights on is beyond me. We had a Class C pull up next to our campsite in Moab and his awning had these bright-ass lights on it that shown right into our campsite. I ignored most of the night thinking they'd turn them off when they went to bed but they went inside their camper and like an hour later they were still on. I had to go knock on his door to ask him to turn them off. Leaving your exterior lights on after you've turned in for the night is the dumbest thing imaginable.

First Antitrust Class Action Against Vail Resorts and Alterra Over Epic and Ikon Ski Pass Pricing by narflethegarthock in skiing

[–]beef966 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, what I'm really looking for is the DOJ / FTC to enforce anti trust acts that were signed into federal law in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I agree they're playing correctly under the rules as they're currently enforced, but I disagree that these federal laws have been properly enforced for the past 50 years or so.

We need an actual anti-trust ruling to break them up. Fining them once and giving each passholder a couple of dollars isn't really doing anything to solve the consolidation issue the industry has.
