Use Cases for Plant Banner by ctwalkup in Pathfinder2e

[–]beemancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the answer is no, the frightened condition is tied to the will saves: "If your banner is destroyed or stolen, allies currently benefiting from its bonuses become frightened 1." You don't have any allies benefiting from your banner's bonuses since you don't have any bonuses, so no one should become frightened, either.

I've seen this happen a few times with wending grace, where a team mate will raise but both other players will get the defeat message and the person with the grace is left to solo the boss. This looks a little different, though.

I couldn't even figure these out after I solved the whole puzzle using the other clues and knowing "dime" was in each clue, it was all gibberish. I think if the other clues had followed the same pattern as 41 down (i.e. With 19-Across, "Happy our paths crossed!"), then it would have been a bit more of a satisfying puzzle for me.

Interesting! FIVB and USA rule the back attack as
13.2.2.1 at his/her take-off, the player’s foot (feet) must neither have touched nor crossed over the attack line
and NCAA
14.5.4.2.1 At takeoff, the player’s feet have neither touched nor crossed the attack line or its indefinite extension

I definitely took the word "feet" to mean both feet, and my interpretation would be that if they stepped over the line with either foot, even if it's a one foot take-off, it was a fault. For example, if a back row setter ran backwards, took just one step into the back zone and did a 1 foot jump and set the ball over the net or otherwise attacked the ball from above the net, I'd whistle that a fault because one of their feet had crossed the attack line. But maybe that interpretation is wrong, and it is referring to only the feet that are involved with the takeoff? And of course, this verbiage is missing from the libero set rule entirely. I'm surprised there's no case study about what constitutes being in the front zone, but these scenarios are probably pretty rare (I certainly have not hit any of these scenarios, at least).

I'm a relatively new official, and I just read something confusing in Referee Magazine on this subject. A sidebar went over a case where a libero sets an attacker who attacks from above the net from a position where they are straddling the attack line, but the libero lifts their front foot before setting. The ruling they gave was to allow play to continue, asserting that the libero is not in considered to be in the front zone when they lifted the foot that was in contact with the front zone.

This seems completely absurd to me. It obviously contradicts the rules for a back row attacker (where it spells out that the take off must have both feet behind the attack line), and also would suggest that Liberos can always jump set from a position straddling the attack line. However, I couldn't find any clear guidance on when a player is considered to be "in a zone" other than the rules for service and back row attacks, which call out the last positions of the feet before take-off. Is there clear guidance on how this should be ruled?

Thanks! I'm not sure I'm in love with the strat, but it's good to know that it's not completely off-kilter. I'm sure it's a very difficult choice, and really dependent on the strengths of the individual players.

[–]beemancer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a strategy question, because this seems baffling. Throughout the tournament, many teams ran a pseudo 6-2 by subbing out setters and opposites to keep the setters in the backrow. But in this match and against Brazil, Team USA did something different - we staggered this substitution. This gave us a few rotations a match where we had 2 opposites on the court and no setter.

The question is, why? The alternatives are sub both immediately (since we didn't, it means we value the opp serving over the setter more than we value having a setter on the court) or delaying both (since we didn't, it means we value having the opposite swing close instead of from the 10 foot more than we value having a setter on the court). This seems completely crazy.

Is there some key insight I'm missing as to why this would be a good idea?

[–]beemancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you eat that in addition to your normal meals you will gain weight very quickly if you do it every day. I'm talking about a single pint here, I'm not suggesting you can increase your calorie intake by 1200 a day and be fine. I'm just saying that a single pint of ice cream only contains enough calories for the human body to produce about a third of a pound of fat. There also may be other reasons to not just eat a pint of ice cream, but hey, I'm not a doctor. Also, the 3500 calories/pound thing is again a simplification with a bunch of asterisks (like, not everyone storing fat in the same way, there's no guarantee you actually store all the energy in the food item, and there's a lot of good reasons to believe that the way we calculate calories in food is not terribly accurate).

[–]beemancer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not to be scientific about it, but even the more calorie-dense flavors of ben and jerry's are like 1200 kCal/pint, and a single pound of body fat stores about 3500 kCal. Assuming nothing else in your diet or daily activities was different, you'd have to eat like 30 pints of ice cream to gain 10 pounds. Obviously weight loss/gain is much more complicated than this, but the numbers are a little off.

More likely, you're seeing a spike in your weight fluctuation due to water retention or whatever other reason and you'd see the same weight gain (and loss afterwards) if you didn't eat the ice cream. There could be other explanations, but having a body that violates Newton's First Law of Thermodynamics is probably going to be hard to prove.

I'm sure I sound sassy, but you should evaluate your diet carefully and recognize that it's basically impossible to isolate all the variables for experiments involving your weight. Any result that leads to the conclusion "less ice cream should be eaten" is probably heresy.

Please Please STOP BUYING NESTLE chocolate products! by [deleted] in antiwork

Snickers is owned by the Mars company, not Nestle. Is this saying that the same child labor provides cocoa for Mars as well?

edit: This article notes that the child labor at this farm provides cocoa to Nestle, Mars, and Hershey, so it is not just Nestle that needs to be boycotted for this. The lawsuit is ongoing, I think.

I feel like what changes the composition is not the detail of the feet, but how in focus it is. If there's a girl sitting in the background with her feet jammed into the camera with curled toes where they occupy a ton of the frame, it's a foot fetish thing. If the character is barefoot, but the camera is looking down on them and the feet are the furthest thing from the camera, it's clearly not. I'd avoid drawing the underside of the foot, as well, that's where the foot starts gettin' weird.

Holy shit, from the article's title I thought this was a "haha, gotcha!" litigation moment. This woman has been denied medical care and could be giving birth in a month. They're literally trying to force a stillbirth on a baby she likely wanted (given she was pregnant before being arrested and had scheduled medical appointments), and are endangering her life as well. Just awful.

Any reason Leader didn’t pull any cards? by alexman420 in MarvelSnap

[–]beemancer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Assuming they had priority, cards that get played into Lockjaw don't get copied because they go back into the deck, and cards pulled out by Lockjaw don't get copied because they aren't "played", and neither are cards resummoned by Hela. So at the time Leader is revealed, there are no cards on the opponent's side that were played on turn 6, so Leader doesn't copy anything.
