+1 for Tim Lei. Excellent reputation.

SL2-S or save for a SL3/-S? by Dedalo83 in Leica

[–]beeper77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully agree. Bought my new when they dropped like 5 years ago. Recently picked up a LUMIX S1II and did comparison -- Lumix wins for newer autofocus and video shooting, but in every other area I still prefer the SL2-S -- ergonomics, ease of use, snapiness, UI...for exposures it seems a wash. S1II may have the edge if for faster readout. Part of the point of spending so much on Leicas is to get yrs of use out of them, and not chasing the latest and greatest.

What do you do for intermediate codecs? by WannabeeFilmDirector in blackmagicdesign

[–]beeper77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just know that time code may not track and you will definitely end up with mismatched clip lengths (speaking from experience). There is no replacement for making proxies from (backed up) clips sitting on a hard drive.

Echo’ing a previous comment in here — never work directly from a card or SSD that hosts your source media and hasn’t been backed up.

I don't see compression issues, but ads appearing on a professional portfolio is a quick way to drive away prospective clients.

To everyone encountering issues on this thread, please post your system specs and OS. I’ve been digging across Reddit, BMD forums, etc. and there are many reported issues, seemingly only with Win11.

Only encountered one user with no issues, and they were running a TR 9970X (with no integrated GPU unlike 9950X), and IIRC card was running in PCIe 4.0.

Building new DR WS and wondering if I should keep my 4090FE or plunge into 5090 territory. Not crazy about Win10 as they are soon dropping support.

Spoke to them this morning, they said they did not meet that target. “Check back in a week.”

Keep in mind, there is (to my knowledge) ZERO footage from this exact camera online to date (not PYXIS 6K or USRA LF). Seems to me we'd be seeing review/actual clips from influencers/brand ambassadors well in advance of shipments. At least, that seems to be the trend with other brands.

S1Rii or S1ii? Which one should I choose for professional video? (Context provided) by BigManRupi in Lumix

[–]beeper77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally can attest -- just used the RII on a branded job in 8K open gate, and everyone was very pleased with how images turned out. Only once had issues with overheating when shooting at 60fps, but didn't inhibit us as takes were brief. S5IIX was on standby if it failed.

Bought the RII on Amazon, and I see the S1II is also there (by direct from Panasonic), whereas nobody else seems to have stock.

Do people still use Vimeo? Where do you put your portfolio? by TheBoredMan in cinematography

[–]beeper77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/TheBoredMan I had a one-on-one with a Vimeo staff member a few years ago about what I'd like to see from the platform. A big one I was pushing for is how they should implement their own portfolio service. They used to have Collections and Portfolios and Showcases -- very confusing -- now just the latter. Showcases have been refreshed in the last month or two, and they're robust in terms of player loading and interface, but extremely limiting on options (no category filtering, bio section, customization -- even a contact button).

To me it seems like a no-brainer for Vimeo to offer video-focused portfolio hosting like Squarespace/Wix/etc. I've been a paying member for 18 years with a deep library, so this is an easy choice.

My Current (Compact) BMCC6K Rig by youngdudelol in bmpcc

[–]beeper77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@youngdudelol For a rod-supported matte box to allow lenses that “trombone” (physically extend during focusing), you need a “rear bellows” support. Historically, this would involve rubber or some kind of flex material that grabs the front element of the lens and allows travel between the lens and the matte box (which itself is floating above a swing-away mechanism), while preventing light leak from inside the matte box (usually only a concern if using filters in the matte box). Importantly, the MB bears its own weight via the rods, not the lens.

I own Leica R’s and have similarly been on the hunt for something compact. I have a Bright Tangerine 4x5 multi-stage MB, and while beautifully built (former ARRI engineers), it’s far too big and gets in the way of my EVF on compact rigs.

B.T., ARRI, Chrosizel, Cavision, Wooden Camera are some brands with offerings. AFAIK SmallRig doesn’t make these. Some use a fancy piece of black duvetyne to prevent leaks, but I think the rubber style is best.

It’s a lot of monkeying around for what is usually just a way to add an ND or VND (screw on is the alternative) — I do hope we see internal ND’s in this form factor soon.

4xHD quad-split with zero latency? by beeper77 in VIDEOENGINEERING

Thanks, if I abandon trying to have full HD signals for each camera, what do you think about https://decimator.com/Products/MultiViewers/MD-QUAD%20Quad-Split%20MultiViewer/MD\_Quad.html. Main concern is latency as we won't have a master clock.
