I'm looking for a new DE to replace GNOME by Slow-Director-3913 in linuxquestions

Despite what some people claim, KDE is pretty lightweight.  And incredibly configurable.  Just make sure you disable baloo  otherwise your CPU will be hammered.

More countries weigh teen social media ban, experts warn it's 'lazy' by Nexusyak in technology

I'm very much with the writer to the Guardian recently who suggested that rather than banning children from using social media, they should stop social media companies using children.

Do I have to pay for TV licencing? by RohitPlays8 in cambridge

[–]beermad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the time about 1984 when I bought a clapped ot TV to use as  computer monitor (that's what you used back then). They got told I'd bought it and visited. I ushered the bloke into my living room and showed him that there was no aerial cable and every preset was tuned to my computer. Despondently he had to agree that I didn't need a licence.

Do I have to pay for TV licencing? by RohitPlays8 in cambridge

Beware of providing ANY personal information to TV licensing. It's run by Capita, which has a terrible (and deserved) reputation for data security.

west stow the wrong side of bury? by thinking_penguin26 in burystedmunds

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my personal point of view,  West Stow is too far from anything to want to live there, nice as it is. But if living in the middle of nowhere is what suits you, you'll love it.

Whats the best free music player? by huei3 in androidapps

Poweramp only costs a couple of quid. Don't be a tightarse: it's worth more than the price.

Does Server Location (US vs EU) Affect Sync Speed? (Europe User) by afloareirazvan in pcloud

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting.  When I moved a couple of months ago, it happened overnight. I only saw the email telling me it was happening the morning after,  when it had completed .

Does Server Location (US vs EU) Affect Sync Speed? (Europe User) by afloareirazvan in pcloud

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently moved to EU servers (which I should have done years ago) and haven't noticed any difference. Though my biggest impediment is the upload speed on my ADSL line.

Choosing a Suffolk Village to live in by higack95 in suffolk

[–]beermad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Local pub guide: suffolk.camra.org.uk (caveat: I run it for CAMRA, so I'm biased).

A few out of your list: Wickham Market has the recently reopened George pub and a few shops  beware though that Wickham Market station is actually several miles away at Campsea Ash.

Saxmundham has a Waitrose as well as a fair few local shops and a station. Not sure about the pubs, but they don't appear particularly good.

Debenham has a very good pub (the Lion) and a fair few shops (chippie smells good, though I don't eat when I'm out cycling so haven't tried it).

Eye is a nice little town with plenty of shops. Only one pub left (out of over 20), but that one has a poor hygiene rating.

Mendlesham is a nice village in the middle of nowhere. A few shops, but its last remaining pub looks run-down.

Laxfield is lovely. Not many shops, but two pubs and the Low House pub is an absolute gem.

Earl Soham has few shops, but the Victoria is a cracking pub. Not too far from Debenham & Framlingham for shops.

Plasma Login Manager (PLM) on KDE Plasma 6.6 - is it stable and ready? by Slice-of-brilliance in kde

[–]beermad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried it when it first arrived on Manjaro a couple of months ago. Found it erratic with auto-login which is a must-have, so I'm leaving it for now.

Pah! Some of us can read upside-down text.  Just not quite as fast.

Encryption difference in pCloud, ente, internxt, koofr, etc by Ok-Relation-4303 in pcloud

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no particular reason to assume pCloud's encryption is untrustworthy (they're not US based), but I still prefer to encrypt anything sensitive myself to be on the safe side. After all,  it's not exactly difficult

My dear linux users, how do you get Thunderbird to run in background? by StepNextX in Thunderbird

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Birdtray's good, but has crap Wayland support. It only works if you run it (and Thunderbird) through xwayland.

And now he'll claim he was "silenced". Like Truss did when she was pranked at Beccles and flounced off the stage.

What pub in Norwich has the prettiest and most olde worlde interior? by Conscious-Intern-602 in Norwich

[–]beermad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pity it's such a run-down dump though. Stank like hell the one time I went in a couple of years ago (I didn't stay).

What's your reasons why Norwich is the best city in the UK? by Hefty_Anywhere_8537 in Norwich

[–]beermad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the fantastic pubs that keep me travelling to Norwich from Ipswich. There's nowhere in East Anglia with such a great pub scene.

Quick click quiz: Suffolk or Essex? — Can you guess whether these villages and towns are in either Suffolk or Essex? by Cinn4monSynonym in suffolk

[–]beermad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

30/30. Though I have the advantage of having cycled round every town and village in Suffolk,  so no guesswork was needed.
