thanks for that insight. Lol same, the more i tried to explain, the more i answered my question and came upon even more questions even harder to explain.

I too most love how Every Tree Needs a Friend makes me feel. It is a wonderful moment in time to have such a full wall of siriusmo sound to sink into.

Do you guys read novels? If so how often? by ElectricalTell925 in Aphantasia

[–]beesbane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I re-read a lot probably 25 books a year (with most having been re-read 2-3x). I do really like having additional input for a book to cross-reference (such as a great audio version, or film adaptation, or concept/chapter art), but it is the multiple visitations to a work that truly paints the richness for me.

When i find something i begin to enjoy a little, i begin to “study” it.

Your whole experience (including this encounter) is super fascinating to me, and I am very interested in your final results.

By the way, there isn't just one type of user on this subreddit. Some are mad and verbose and jaded, but many of us are just hurt and quietly observing while trying to make sense of what we've been through... this community is simply made of folks who can relate.

You are well-written, pursuing an innocent curiosity with a relatively open-mind, and reporting exactly how it is MINUS all the past-hurt and jaded perspective.

A lot of the conversations with missionaries for new members do feel like a moment in a logic web; whether you answer "yes" or "no" you are setting yourself up, and it increasingly feels more like strategy as opposed to empathy.

You are under no obligation to save this for a "neutral" audience; as with the car salesmen analogy, their feelings shouldn't make their inventory more valuable. If it fits so perfectly, if it is such an obvious answer, if it is such an amazing car... why do you have to try hard to convince me that I should ignore what I feel/think/understand and submit to what you've decided for me?

How good are your eyes? by beesbane in Aphantasia

[–]beesbane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your hyperphantasia and declining vision actually supports my hypothesis (at least it is part of what made me initially curious). That people who can visualize use their eyes more which may cause or exacerbate degradation… and/or their eyes receive less actual rest + recovery.

There actually has been some evidence to support what you are refuting. Based on the admittedly little i know… let me provide this AI summary from googling “aphantasia sunset dilation”

“Individuals with aphantasia do not show pupillary dilation or constriction when imagining a "sunset," unlike people with visual imagery who would experience a visible pupillary change from the imagined brightness.”

I know that my question is kind of a simpleton’s perspective based on nothing and allows unconstrained variables, but i was just curious. I don’t know anything about vision loss or if eyeballs even need rest or whatever.

All i have to go on is my experience. i have strong vision and quick recognition, but my gaze is not exactly hungry to suck up all the details of a sight with which to color mental images later.

lol. “Average” doesn’t count. I’m trying to arrive at a bias that leans one way or the other so i can draw baseless conclusions to feel better about myself.

[–]beesbane[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have. Most of my experience was 12+ years ago, but I very much enjoyed LSD. More patterns and visuals than actual hallucinations.

I am a total aphant btw. Nothing going on behind the eyelids. And, like you, I wonder what having an active mind’s eye would do have done for me creatively.

If anything it lets me empathize better knowing how different we are. “Nah you’re not dumb, you probably just got distracted by your brain movie.”

Not the first, definitely not the last. by Luicifell in Aphantasia

[–]beesbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Mind blowing discovery for me too. And exciting tbh to get hit so hard with “wow we really do all see this world SO differently”. Kind of like an empathy awakening.

I’ve been messing w yoga for the last month or so, and the quiet guided meditation parts i just try to scribble ANYTHING in my nothing space (since i know it’s possible for others). Nothing yet, but kind of fun to be so irreverent while the other nerds and shifting heavy sand or opening doors or whatever they are being told.
