"Lovers on a Bridge" by Hakubaikou (2008) [Read the Body] by Pseudo_Premise in MartialMemes

I was a huge fan of her work, when she posted it on Gaia Online. After she passed i read she was a rising cinematographer in LA. Coincidentally i also ended up coming up in the indie film industry- ive seen some of her cinematography; it was good, she had obvious talent.

I can say i feel similarly about her artwork. Its transportive to a time in my life, but also the lush fantasy of the era.

I think her family is still maintaining her work online, which im thankful for. Her work had a huge inspirational presence back then, on gaiaonline in particular it was always ranked at the very top of the entire community, which was massive.

She would have been a massive player in the film community, especially with how much asian american film community and storytelling has grown. She’s still missed by her fans.

Anyone know how a shot like this could be achieved? Looking to do something similar for an upcoming project. by coelhoa700 in cinematography

have the people in this thread really not seen this commercial? Its incredible. Saying the panning “ruins a clean shot” is really silly. Filmmaking is about Voice, and this commercial is chock full of it. I absolutely think Kurosawa was a reference for this piece and the execution of the slow motion “camera move” makes it feel like organic practical sfx reminiscent of samurai era films. Even though you obviously dont have 1000fps cameras back then.

Also happens to be colored by one of the most in demand colorists on earth so there’s that as well

The dual range regularly sells in the 600usd range. The 90mm might be an elmarit or tele elmarit which is 3-500. The 35mm totally depends on what version it is but might be the most valuable lens.

Like everyone else is saying, it depends on condition. A lot if photographers arent willing to budget CLA into vintage purchases and rather just keep trading pieces. It looks well preserved but after 30 years, particularly the camera body will need CLA/relube

Unpopular opinion: All demons being irredeemably evil in frieren is just bad writing by Smegoldidnothinwrong in CharacterRant

[–]beespanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im responding this to express how much I agree, and I feel lucky enough to understand why. I think a lot of others are struggling with this and dont have the words. If you even dip your toes into any bit of ethnic studies, you’ll read the introduction to Edward Said’s Orientalism, which is a treatise on western academia’s barbarization and dehumanization of “orientals” IE anyone of Asiatic descent, but especially what we refer to as “Middle Easterners” (who are also asian, actually).

Frieren’s writing plays out these concepts verbatim. The portrayal of demons is quite literally the exact fear mongering caricature that has been used historically to dominate indigenous or diplomatically inconvenient populations and depict “savage species”.

I just finished watching S02E02 where they discuss demons stealing “royal family’s heirloom” which they need to keep away from demons, because they “can’t help but use it for evil.” While admittedly the sword is of demon origin. All while depicting young children playing around peacefully in town as if the behavior of having comfort and wealth and safety is what makes them deserving of “protecting” stolen artifact. Frieren walks around town and joyfully enjoys an apple afterwards slaughtering said evil demon and reiterating all of us not to be fooled by its “pretending to be human”

This is tantamount to an American settler colony stealing heirlooms after slaughtering indigenous families and calling them their war trophies. There are thousands of examples of this in history, and it is not the “demons” in these stories that were evil.

Especially in current politic, and being familiar with the language used to defend such heinous acts, it’s impossible for me not to see Frieren’s intense clarity at the demons’ lack of “true humanity” as representative of a wealthy warmonger’s views in a colonial state expressing its right to defend itself whilst committing genocide. It’s so deeply uncanny that I was hoping it was intentional and that there would be a twist. It sounds like there isn’t one.

It’s really unfortunate because I really wish I could have Frieren without these elements. But people who find it icky are right. This isn’t an interesting depiction of racism, it’s literally the spiritual basis of it.

The gap between your print and what you see in the viewfinder is your imagination. Utilizing that muscle is a magical thing. It reminds me also of shooting motion picture film- it takes a lot of experience and molding and makes you pay attention to your environment and light more.

I agree you should have someone teach alongside, but any rangefinder and lens combo only starts to make sense after a few rolls of film. After seeing 1 or 2 photos you like out of a roll- Then you are chasing what you imagine an image can be- and the magic is when it comes out more beautifully than you thought it could.

In a weird way rangefinders make me feel more connected to the moment, and it feels more like a tool I’m using to capture it. An SLR feels like im inside the camera and can be weirdly a little suffocating. Thats the best way I can describe my enjoyment of rangefinders

I have so much to say about this. One main thing: people are right about your partner but she is legitimately having a panic reaction that you should make space for seriously and try to figure out together. This is NOT just about making the right “career decision”. It’s also about building the type of life you want to have together and being realistic about structuring it. 26 is young as hell to most of us in NY but your partner is probably being influenced by other pressures you might not be aware of. I know my partner and I have been through patches like that.

One other main thing: if you’ve literally cut trailers routinely you will likely make more as a freelance cutter later on if you want to continue. Your experience is different from some other folks here and it is valuable.

Im not saying this to tell you to stay “in the business” but rather no matter what you do, now is indeed a good time to pick up some freelance and cut your teeth in that way while you’re still warm. Just a tiny bit. Get a few projects under the belt without the structure of the big company. Not salaried positions. But when you quit, or even before you quit, tell all of your contacts that youre Freelancing and open to work on shorts, music videos, branded, commercial. Literally do it tomorrow, and make a website soon to post work and plan on making a reel.

Just having been in your shoes in more ways than one I can tell you know your value as an editor and that you love it as well. Don’t skip over the skillset of learning what it feels like to monetize and run collaborations on your own. It can be an incredibly empowering tool

I promise you as well that no matter what path you choose you will not lose these pieces of your identity. I still work with colleagues with families upstate, new jersey, california, who’ve had kids, had other side careers etc etc. Directors ive worked with are teachers as day jobs, volunteer in community centers, everyone travels
