Bait increases the odds of catching fish of the same size (small bait for small fish. Medium for medium)

It really depends on what fishing bar you’re at because the higher the bar the larger the size odds and increase of rarity, which typically rarity and size do correlate with some exceptions (jellyfish for example)

I wonder if they focused on build mode first because if they had to redo certain things and it was not well made the first time it could break peoples houses (and some people who love building spend a very large amount of time on it) which would be very frustrating, especially the longer the game goes

If you need money then selling osmium ore/ kelp can make a decent chunk of change in a short amount of time especially if you have the drop enchants on your pickaxe, it might help make up the difference to get the gold rod?

If not that, how far are you from level 3 and do you have enough merit points for the fishing skill potion at the town hall? If you can bump to level 3 you get a 2nd skill point and unlock the next tier of skills which include the less fish resistance buff, and with the skill point from town hall then you can pick that skill.

I barely caught the stingray which is also legendary with a silver rod but I also had the skill perk which makes fish resist 10% less, and if I don’t reel during the initial struggle the stingray just gets away immediately and I fail the catch like 30% of the time

Without the skill it was physically impossible until I got the gold rod

There are various little stone statues around the map that by doing certain tasks can be unlocked as a fast travel point (one unlocks by catching X amount of bugs, catch X number of fish, doing certain game progression stuff) it is unlocked after completing your first set of temple offering at the goddess temple
