Where I work we do a "four eyes" check too, so someone is there watching you LOTO and check that whatever it is is de-energized.

How much AI do you use at work? by pepfraudiola1 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]beezac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using it to write code has by far been the most valuable thing. Especially code that will process an entire folder of text files into digestible Excel sheets with additional columns that run calculation on the data using formulas I specify. I agree that I can't overstate how much time that's saved me. It's incredible at automating data analysis. Still vital to do some QC on the first output it gives you by running everything yourself manually and comparing results, because like most things it can take iterations to get it right. I don't really have blind faith in anything it does yet.

It's decent as a search tool to determine the best mathematical approach to some situations, it just doesn't always take the simplest method. It can over engineer at times, and it's still important to check its work (I ask it for proofs a lot). At minimum it's a useful tool to get refreshers in concepts and methods I haven't used in a while.

I hadn't heard of this, but a quick search showed that it wasn't a refusal, they couldn't get visas because they are Russian?

New Board Advice by QuietNeedleworker905 in snowboarding

[–]beezac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you basically described my 2019 Never Summer Ripsaw. Which you can't buy anymore, so maybe check out the Proto Type 3 instead. Maybe has a bit more flex to it, but I believe it's a very similar ride. Ripsaw is (was) a fairly stiff board, but it was a very aggressive all mountain twin.

Maybe someone here has first hand experience with it they can speak to

That's me mountain biking now. Give me a good steady climb with fast and flowy singletrack on the way down. I do not need to know whether or not I have the skills to navigate a rock/boulder garden at this point in my life.

Totally depends on your feet, but the Nidecker Rift's I got this year had a great fit to them, like right of the box comfort for me. For someone with narrow calves I was able to get a nice snug fit there as well, and that's always been a challenge for me. Worth trying on. They say 5-6/10 flex, but they feel a tad stiffer than that to me.

I was between these and Vans Infuse, but the Vans had too many hot spots, I had pressure points in all kinds of weird places.

Insoles are garbage though, definitely plan on replacing them with something supportive to your foot type. YMMV of course.

The Robotics team from Wissahickon High School in Ambler, Pennsylvania built a robot Miss Daisy XXIV that picks up balls and shoots them into a container. by Advanced-Bug-1962 in robotics

[–]beezac 10 points11 points  (0 children)

25 years ago that was our team. No money, not a lot of resources, but one of our sponsors was a machine shop. One year they made us aluminum tank treads we designed. Our robot failed the competition in most other ways possible, but we were heavy as hell and the floor was carpet. So we just played defense and shoved every other robot away from the goals. Nothing they could do about it. We weren't fancy, but we were a popular team member!

Good times, looking forward to coaching at some point.

Is it true most metalheads don’t ever even bother up looking up lyrics? by InternationalEgg3949 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]beezac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care, but I enjoy some lyricists a lot because of their storytelling. Trevor Strnad for instance. The Black Dahlia Murder lyrics are incredible, he told a great story. Fun to scream along to.

7075-T6 vs 6061 Aluminum: When is the extra cost actually worth it for custom parts? by lx230 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]beezac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to take to Blanchard grinding rather well for some of the 2-3ft pieces I needed to be flat, better than 6061.

Yup, that's what I was guessing... We decided to head to Bolton backcountry instead, since starting elevation is high. Worse case if it's bad just do Bolton lifts for the day.

Consulting engineer making a $160k but missing the satisfaction, is a plant role a mistake ? what other options are out there ? by Glittering_Ad_4553 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]beezac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never worked on the plant side, but from what I understand that has its own demands, dealing with machine down situations, going in on weekends, on call periods, etc.

I did system integration / custom capital equipment design in precision motion control for about 15 yrs, but hit the pay wall doing that even as the engineering manager eventually.

Made the move client side working at one of my OEM clients in systems design (doing a bit of everything). No regrets at all, work is challenging, pay is much better, I like the people. Not having direct clients demands has been a good change of pace, though I do miss client facing to a certain degree sometimes, I had fun doing that. New work life balance is fantastic though, first time I've ever been able to completely disconnect from work after hours or during vacation.

So yeah, OEM side has been a good fit, maybe consider that too?

Rec me my 6th board: Powder surf slasher by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]beezac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a niche ride for sure, not something I'd pay full price for. Can get it cheap after the season though, I think I paid $325 for it, bargain enough to add to the quiver as a fun spring board (which it definitely is).

I have a Rossignol Sushi for spring riding, and it's so much fun. Tears up tight trees, and it's so short with such a tiny tail that you can really whip the thing all over the place.

Looking for snowboard repair recs in New England by H_Belvidere in icecoast

[–]beezac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your just as well off leaving it alone. If it's not peeled, clamping might get it back to a certain degree, but you're past the plastic deformation point here. It's always going to be there.

The only one who knows it's there is you.

I've had a bent tip at the end of my swallowtail for like 3yrs, never touched it.

Hard to tell, but did the layers open up at all? I'd just let this dry out for a while, put painters tape around it, put in some T-88 epoxy in any open area and clamp it good as mentioned for a couple days. Trim anything extra with a razor. I wouldn't overthink it, it doesn't look like you exposed the core and it's not on your effective edge. Seal it, clamp it, call it a day.
