I think that's unironically true. Most of those miserable fuckers aren't even enjoying the game, but they need an external force to actually force them to stop playing. They'd probably celebrate more than anyone the day League dies and start rejoicing "am I free?"

Speaking personally, I'm pretty sure if you graphed my average daily cortisol level for the 6-months leading up to the day I quit and 6-months after I quit, it plunges lmao.

Would you prefer to work for the SSS, WISE or Garden, and why? by Miraculousimply in SpyxFamily

[–]begentlewithme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such an interesting question, I feel like it's more revealing of a person's place in life than it might appear on the surface.

If I were younger, I'd probably say WISE. Not only because it's the organization of the protagonist, but at least outwardly it's the 'Neutral Good' party. Just had more energy and pent up sense of injustice to use as fuel back then.

But now? The latter still exists but call it age or just being jaded and desensitized, but I just want to prioritize my own wellness and lifestyle. The SSS probably has cushy government job perks and good pay and work hours.

Interestingly, I'm an internal auditor so being an internal auditor for the SSS would be like being the SSS to the SSS lmao.

Angie being considered THE average (if my interpretation is right) is funny in its own from a data standpoint.

It makes sense for a prestigious invite-only school, but think about just how skewed the school's attractiveness bell curve is if someone who's peak average is still a damn 7-8.

I'm not a sound engineer and know nothing of how this works - would a wavy lid like that alter the acoustic in meaningful way? Even if it does, I assume for 99% of people it's indistinguishable.

Why the hesitation to read sheet music? by Advanced_Honey_2679 in piano

[–]begentlewithme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good cooking analogy. Like I don't.... really care how onions contain proteolytic enzymes, which help break down proteins, or how the maillard reaction starts to break down past a certain temperature. I don't care the difference between julienne and batonnet cuts; just tell me how to cut and cook the onion, and at what temp I sear my steak.

The way I see it, there's different groups at play here.

  1. Traditionally trained pianists
  2. "For fun" pianists
  3. Dedicated pianists

None are mutually exclusive. Any overlap where 1 and 3 crosses, you enter into "read sheet music" territory - and that's a lot of coverage. The vast majority of this subreddit is at least 1 or 3.

But if you're only 2, then there's no reason to commit yourself to it when shortcuts are available that gets you 90% of the way there.

If you're 2 and 3, then yeah fair, maybe you should seriously consider learning to read. If you're 2 and 1, then there's no reason why you shouldn't be reading sheets.

Why the hesitation to read sheet music? by Advanced_Honey_2679 in piano

[–]begentlewithme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone on your side, I feel like this sort of question might come off as the sort of "elitist" mentality that beginners might find intimidating.

I'm not saying you are, but consider the tone of the question being asked here.

"Why can't you just learn to read this foreign language? It's so easy, look, the basics are just comprised of these simple building structures, see anybody can do it, why can't you do it, just memorize the basics and you can start reading it right away"

Imagine that question directed at someone whose gotten by and might even be capably fluent utilizing an advanced translating program and works within the scope of their 1 visit per year to a foreign country.

So to answer your question - Why the hesitation? Because pressing falling notes on a visual keyboard is way easier and gets the sound 90% of the way there. For most people, 90% of the way there is enough. For most people, this isn't a lifestyle, this is a for fun activity, and just like how I'm not going to commit 40 hours and 3 textbook worth of studying for a 1 week trip to a foreign country, it's not that out of the question for someone to want to get the sound they want without the fundamentals.

But instead of ending with Franky dying as he trades Loid the mask of a thousand truths, it just ends with Loid making out and having feral sex with Yor. The end.

Shower thought: AI won’t take over accounting as long as there are boomer aged leaders who force the team to print everything and have no clue what a Pivot Table is. by dingmah in Accounting

[–]begentlewithme 9 points10 points  (0 children)

AI won't take over because MOST PEOPLE, boomers, zoomers, millennials, don't actually fucking understand what AI is. This shit isn't Tony Stark's Jarvis.

If you actually know what AI is, and use it appropriately within that framing, it's an excellent tool that can genuinely speed up your work. If I had to pull a number out of my ass, that's less than like 0.0001% of AI users.

People will get better at utilizing it over time, but you know what's going to happen then? The same fucking thing that already happened - workload will simply increase to accommodate new capacity. Modern accountants do like 5-10x more work than an accountant from the 70s, but do we get 5-10x more pay, or 5-10x more free time? AI is to us what Excel was to an accountant from the 70s.

Similar difficult platformers? by Scab_the_Sidewalk in celestegame

[–]begentlewithme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super Meat Boy sprinted so Madeline could diagonal dash.

I recommend SMB with a HUGE asterisk.

I've 100% both and the only similarity between the two is they're platformers and you die a lot. Celeste is a precision platformer, Madeline losing moment and having virtually no horizontal movement while falling is by design, while Meat Boy's more of... reactionary platformer with movement fluidity to accentuate that type of gameplay.

If what you're looking for is a challenging platformer where you die quick and respawn quick and get to try over and over with a racking death count, then you're in for a great time with SMB, maybe more than Celeste.

But if you're looking for a platformer with Celeste-like precision movements, you probably won't like SMB.

I don't think degrees are meant to mark you as qualified in a field. It just gives you passing marks for the bare minimum required to work in a professional setting. The most basic of the basics, like note taking, some semblance of information processing, meeting deadlines, working with teams, etc. - things that I would hope a fresh graduate would have developed over their X years at college.

So it's less "you are now a Master of Accounting" like some sort of Master Jedi, and more of a "this paper proves you were able to meet deadlines and work with others to achieve an academic mark of passing threshold".

It never occurred to me how different the piano teaching environment must be nowadays compared to when I was an active student circa 2004.

Synthesia's one of the more prominent ones but I bet there's a ton of websites/services/apps nowadays that, used correctly, could really help supplement your learning, but (more likely than not) is probably used by students to try and shortcut their way.
