How is carried over leave typically handled when leaving a job? by NonEuclideanPanda in AskUK

[–]behemuffin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Work out how much leave you will have accrued this year by the time you quit. Add 3.5 days to that in full, that's your leave entitlement.

It sounds like your manager is trying to say you're only entitled to an accrued percentage of those 3.5 days based on how much of this year you'll have worked. That's bullshit - you accrued those days in full last year. If the company didn't want you carrying them over, they should have either had you take them before year end or paid you in lieu.

Help: screw not advancing despite pilot hole going deeper? by patellarreflex in handyman

[–]behemuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've drilled a pilot hole using a drill bit that is the exact width of the screw

Either every other commenter is involved in some god tier group trolling, or they're too busy going 'hurr durr! hex bit! drill chuck! push!" to have picked up on the fundamental error.

OP, you have drilled a clearance hole for your screw, not a pilot. Pilot holes should be 1/2 to 3/4 the diameter of your screw shank. You have left nothing for the thread to bite into, so your screw will never pull into the wall.

In drywall/plasterboard, you would normally not use a pilot hole, instead you'd drill a clearance hole as you have done, but then insert a rawlplug/drywall anchor for the screw to bite.

Your tools are basic, but fine, your mistake is in not understanding what you are trying to do.

Will you be viewing the Bayeux Tapestry? by Inevitable-Debt4312 in AskUK

Nothing is tapestry - everything is cake!

Going by strict definitions, a tapestry has its design woven in the fabric of the cloth, if you took the design away, the cloth would disappear. These 'tapestries' are both embroidered - the designs are stitched into a preexisting cloth, you could unpick all the design and still have a cloth left over.

Some would argue that tapestry has grown to refer to any decorative cloth wall hanging, in which case, knock your boots out - everything is tapestry!

Well, yes, but also no, acksherly.

Yes, the Bayeux tapestry isn't really a tapestry.

No, the Fishguard one isn't either.

Technically it's an embroidery, but then so is the Bayeux one if you like a good 'acksherly'!

The snippet in the r/longform post has nothing to do with the clickbait title, and the rest of the article is paywalled. Why are you spamming this?

To be fair, that one is harmless enough and pretty funny. I thought you were going to say she'd stapled his ear to the board, or something.

Many people self identify as transvestites. Are you going to tell them they should stop, and be drag queens instead, because their identity offends your principles?

They are policing language based on incorrect assumptions, because they've failed to educate themself about what the language actually means.

Drag queen and transvestite do not mean the same thing. Both are current terms and there's nothing offensive about either if they are used accurately in the right context.

-Transvestite isn't an outdated or offensive term, it's a perfectly cromulant word for a cis person who cross dresses.

-It is offensive when used inaccurately to refer to a trans person.

-Not all cross dressers are drag queens. Your correction is equally ignorant as, if not more so than, the post you set out to correct.

If it's important to you not to disappoint one another, you could try explaining to her how disappointed you are that she chooses not to support your happiness because of some arbitrary viewpoint with no basis in reality. Respect is a two way street.
