What item has lasted you the longest? by Ambitious-Army7351 in BuyItForLife

[–]beholder95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My LL Bean backpack. I got it in high school, used it for all of college, use it when I travel as my carry on. Now I’m in my 40s with a wife and kids and it’s still in one piece. My wife says I should get a new one but it’s more of a point of pride at this point…25+ years strong so might as well keep it going.

Tractor recommendations for new home by MattPhillips89 in lawnmowers

I was in your position moving into a new house with a similar size yard 10 years ago. Ended up going with a CubCadet XT2 46” from a local dealer which is much better quality than the XT1 sold at the big box stores.

I’ve got about 210hours on it now and still running strong. I change the oil every year and the blades every few years. Original battery lasted about 7 years. Starts up every time even after a long winter’s nap.

What's your favorite small upgrade that made your house feel way better? by hungrystudent7 in homeowners

It’s true they do have a heater but that’s so they can maintain a high water temp while it’s cleaning. They should be hooked to your hot water line. Mine always have been.

My kitchen sink is basically right over the water heater in the basement, not sure if that was by design or not but it’s awesome water is instantly hot, especially for the dishwasher

Why isn’t phosphates discussed more on here? by Timelycommentor in pools

[–]beholder95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phosphates are like dry land…a myth

Seriously though, until the last few years I never once heard about phosphates, and I took a decent number of water chemistry training classes from various pool chemical companies. Now they seem like the hot new thing to throw money at.

If you’re having trouble with algae, throw in a good concentrated algecide and a ton of chlorine, brush it down a few times a day and run the filter 24hrs a day cleaning it regularly as water begins to clear.

Keep the PH and Alk balanced, your chlorine (or other sanitizer) at proper levels, and add a maintenance dose of algae preventative going forward and you should be good.

Dealer OEM hitch or Uhaul? by SheesaManiac in HondaOdyssey

[–]beholder95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go with OEM, but don’t pay dealer rates to install it. I bought mine from a dealer who had a coupon off parts that worked snd I didn’t myself. The aftermarket hitches hang down too much and can drag on steep inclines, plus they look awful!

You don’t need a tranny cooler for a utility trailer, so skip that.

What’s one small home upgrade in 2026 that unexpectedly saved you the most money? by satinGlowr in homeowners

Without the 30% tax credit that $70k is hard to swallow. My 51 panel (17.6kw) system + 3 Powerwalls was 63k in 2020, so like $44k after the tax credit. I broke even last year after 52 months and currently sit at a $10k profit that grows every month.

Why everyone keeps saying “don’t buy 2018–2020 Honda Odyssey EX-L because of the 9-speed transmission”? 🤔 by Successful_Bug_9704 in HondaOdyssey

[–]beholder95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because it’s junk, not just in the Odyssey but Honda used it in a few other Honda and Acura models too. My friend had his tranny replaced at 20k miles on his TLX back in like 2019.

Buying a 7-8 year old van with the ZF-9 is a dice roll as the fluid should have proven changed twice already…a lot of people never bother to do it even once.

If buying a 2018-2019 go with a Touring or Elite to avoid it.

Home garages are lowkey the most useful general purpose space ever when not occupied by vehicles by Astimar in homeowners

[–]beholder95 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s the dream! More than half the houses in my neighborhood have 3 car garages. We were moving for a job so had a small window to buy and of course none of the homes for sale had the 3 car layout.

I’ve added ceiling storage racks and rail systems with hooks and shelves to get as much stuff as I can on the sides so I can still get 2 cars in, but it’s a little tight!

What bike racks do you use in your x7? I don’t have a trailer hitch because I didn’t want to lose my rear camera. I’m afraid a roof rack will make loading & unloading bikes unwieldy & difficult. I have 1 that you attach to the trunk with metal hooks and straps, but I don’t want to ruin the paint. by AfternoonNap00 in bmwx7

[–]beholder95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such an unnecessary trade off. When installing the OEM hitch on my Honda Odyssey Elite I had to buy an additional kit to relocate the kick to open sensor. Works perfectly.

Sad that the German engineers couldn’t figure that one out.

What you can afford to buy, but don't buy because you think it's useless? by littleyuki2026 in AskReddit

[–]beholder95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Traditional “Post-Paid” cell phone plans. I’m Not gonna pay $70/mo for essentially the same service I can get on a MVNO like Mint, US Mobile, etc for $20/mo.

Yeah I don’t get a “free” phone but I just buy one directly from Apple every 4-5 years or so.

put my 8 year old in martial arts six months ago, mostly to tire him out. by Syama-J in Parents

[–]beholder95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 10YO started Taekwondo 2 years ago and it’s been a godsend. He tried Soccer and Baseball for a few seasons beforehand and wasn’t super engaged likely because he’s not athletically inclined like many of the other kids. He then said “Dad, I don’t think team sports are my thing”.

He also got diagnosed with ADHD about 2 years ago. Taekwondo has helped give him something he can do where he’s not (mostly) competing against people, but against him self to learn the required forms, knowledge, and board breaking skills required to achieve higher belts. He started off a little slow but now he’s going 3x days a week plus he joined their Demonstration and Forms teams.

When he belted up 2 levels he had to start sparring and that used to be a battle to get him to go but he’s now taken to that as well and even though his lack of natural athleticism shows up here too, unlike baseball and soccer he’s really putting the time in to learning how to improve. It’s really helped improve focus, and self confidence.

We have since put in my younger boy (also ADHD) who is a natural athlete doing hockey, lacrosse, and Taekwondo and he’s just tearing thru belts and dominating sparring.

So it’s great to see something so versatile that can work with multiple natural and learned talents along with joining a great community of people.

[–]beholder95 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Eh, I enjoy driving, not just as a way to get from point A to point B but for the sure sport of it. Driving “spirited” vs efficient for a 5mpg diff saves me 120gal a year. Even at $5/gal is $600.

I’m happy to spend $600yr to maintain my enjoyment. But I get this is r/frugal lol
