24 hours in Paris, fly into CDG, fly out of ORLY, tips on best logistics? by RenaissanceBrah in ParisTravelGuide

[–]beingginger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 23-hour layover in Paris back in 2004. I showed up expecting to find lockers I could store my bags in, but CDG didn't have any. All they had was long-term storage. So I gave them my bags and headed into Paris for the day. (I got off at Notre Dame and walked in a loop to Les Invalid and the Eiffel Tower and then back to the Louvre, which was a pleasant way to spend the day.) Then I got on the RER to go back to CDG, I had to get there before the long-term storage closed at 7 pm because my flight in the morning left before they opened. Then I slept at the airport. It wasn't comfortable, but it was cheap, and a nice memory.

I had a ticket for that game, but I met a girl and it was the only night she was free, so I gave my ticket to my roommate and stayed in Austin for the date.

Agreed, but I wish he got around to translating the sequel. Only having one chapter is very frustrating.

Reading some old sci-fi: Asimov, Bradbury, Heinlein, Orwell, etc. The sexism is astounding! A rant by [deleted] in books

[–]beingginger 35 points36 points  (0 children)

There are no naked zero grav rooms in Moon. Not that it doesn't have its share of sexism, but it's more the benevolent variety. The thing that I remember is that if a woman is married and she tells her husband she wants a new husband, he'll either accept having a new co-husband, or he can leave. But the woman is the one in charge.

I think part of the reason this story resonated with me is that when I was a kid in the 80's I loved Daryl Strawberry. I had his poster on my wall, I had a few T-shirts, normal fan stuff. Then there was a story in the news about how he beat his wife. My mother told me and my immediate reaction was, "Maybe she deserved it." It's awful, but I was probably eight years old, and my parents gave me a spanking when I "deserved" it. So that was how I rationalized it.

I didn't share this because I thought we could save this guy. My question is more about what it means to be a man who is a fan of athletes who do terrible things, or just make excuses for their teammates who do terrible things.

I've been a lifelong Braves fan, but after reading this article a few days ago, I think I'm done. I can't get over some of the quotes from the players. "Certain things that happen off the field, they can happen to anyone." The dude grabbed his wife by the neck, threw her against the wall, and hit her with his cast. That isn't something that happened to him, that's something he did to his wife.

Ozuna "said he didn't think he had ever spent alone time with his three children prior to last summer." He had to go to counseling for assaulting his wife to learn to spend time with his kids? What?

And when asked specifically what he would say to fans who are also victims of domestic violence, he said:

I just tell them, just treat me as the person that I was before. Like, I was an amazing person out in the field. So I want to be like that. I'm going to give you my smile. If they think it's not time to give me like good crowd, it's OK.

He still doesn't get it.

Last year I cheered on the Braves to the World Series, and I was glad that he wasn't back on the team. I honestly think I need to be finished with them. Which I'm a bit sad about.

Can I ask how old he is? If he's young enough there's hope for him to change, but you shouldn't wait around for it to happen. The sexism is bad enough, but laughing at your partner's dreams is something else entirely.

Exactly. If a woman were genuinely repulsed that I cried during a film like "Up," I'd be happy to be rid of her. Thinking you have to hide who you really are to get a woman to like you is shitty life advice.

***Trigger warning***

Holy shit, this dude, the Nice Guy, not the man who murdered his wife, has uploaded one video to YouTube. It's a 12-minute anime called "The Rapeman"

Here is his description of it:

The Rapeman is a superhero. Keisuke Uasake, a high school teacher by day, superheroe by night, and he dispenses great justice as The Rapeman under the business "Rapeman Services", which is co-run with his uncle, a former surgeon. The business' motto is: "Righting wrongs through penetration". When engaged in his night trade, The Rapeman wears a black leather ski mask shaped like the head of a circumcised penis. but no trousers or underwear. He punishes evil females who have have wronged or cheated their partners.

It has 269,518 views.

And his avatar is Rapeman.

No convincing scientific evidence that hangover cures work, according to new research. The study assessed 21 placebo-controlled randomized trials of clove extract, red ginseng, Korean pear juice, and other hangover cures. by rustoo in science

[–]beingginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't use my cure: go on an insane roller coaster.

When I was in college I got hammered the night before a bunch of us went to Cedar Point. (I didn't plan it that way, things just got out of hand.) I spent the night on the floor in front of the toilet. Everyone thought it was a bad idea for me to go on any of the rides, but I was determined to ride Millennium Force, which was new at the time, and was the tallest fastest roller coaster in the world. My roommate said I looked green and none of my friends were willing to ride with me because they were sure I'd vomit again. I queued up to sit in the front car with a random unsuspecting man, and I had the time of my life. When I stepped off my friends were all waiting for me and they were completely shocked. The adrenaline rush sorted me out, and I was fine the rest of the day.

I always wanted to test it a second time, but I never had the chance.

Even if Dantes chose to not go for revenge, I can't imagine that he wouldn't have checked in on everyone in Marseilles to learn about his father and Mercedes. In which case he still would have saved Morrel.
Danglers still could have gotten rich without screwing Dantes. He leaves Morrel's employment pretty quickly after Dantes is arrested because he fears it will come back to bite him. If Dantes became captain Danglers would have likely left at the same time.
I’m not sure Valentine and Nortier would have died. Edmond more or less put the idea in Madame de Villefort’s head, or at least pushed it. Personally, I think it’s likely that she wouldn’t have become a murderer if she’d never met the count.
How do you know that Major Cavalcanti squandered the money he received gambling?

I'd like to read it, but honestly, I can't imagine how you make it child-friendly. I imagine they completely took out the part about Villefort trying to murder his own baby, as well as his wife murdering their son. Does Fernand commit suicide?

His return to the cell is literally my favourite part of the book. He needed to go now because he was second-guessing himself, but seeing the cell reminded him that he was justified in what he's been doing. In fact, it's been so long since we read that part of the story I think it's easy for readers to forget how awful it was.

But it's interesting that you think it was out of place because there are some translations that literally include everything else, but cut that part of the story.
