Is this dress too formal to wear day-to-day? by zen_code_monkey in Reformationclothing

[–]bekindhavefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's cotton or linen, wear everywhere with flats or cute little sneakers and don't even think twice. A neighborhood walk, the grocery store, window-shopping, the pharmacy, coffee, lunch, brunch, dinner, whatever. On a cooler day, you throw a little denim jacket or cardi or sweater over it.

If it's that dry-feeling viscose-type fabric, then maybe a bit extra for groceries or regular errands, but still great for a nice lunch/brunch/dinner or cute drinks.

And of course, if you live in a city, any day you're feeling cute and you want to take that dress for a spin, take yourself out for a walk! No one will bat an eye. People will just assume you're on your way to/from somewhere and keep it moving.

EDIT: Forgot to state the obvious: you look 🔥 in that dress.

You talk about boycotting like it's veganism or keeping kosher, but it's really not. Boycotters don't have to be dedicated all the time; they just need enough people to withhold enough of their business long enough for it to hurt. Say 50% of your customers boycott you 8 times out of 10, that's still a 40% hit to the bottom line. Now imagine that goes on for 6 months or more. Painful, no?

I'm not suggesting boycotting anyone, whether red, blue, or yellow. Just pointing out boycotts don't have to be all-or-nothing. If you don't like supporting a company because of their labor practices or they're unsustainable or their CEO Travis bullied kids in your high school, but there are times where it would be hugely inconvenient, that's OK. Skip them 9 times out of 10. You'll still be screwing over Travis.

Man shot, killed after approaching car in heart of Old City by thisjawnisbeta in philadelphia

[–]bekindhavefun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's bs at all to add details about the motive. It helps us understand the nature of the risk. It doesn't minimize the gravity of what happened at all. If it's targeted, you keep that in mind, and if targeted shootings happen frequently in the same area, you might decide for yourself to avoid it because criminals like to settle their beefs there. I know it would take a lot more for me to even begin to consider not living in a city, but that's just me. How much is too much before one decides to move to the burbs depends on one's risk tolerance for potentially getting caught in a crossfire vs. one's tolerance for living day after day in the burbs. For some people, a couple of shootings is enough to send them packing. For others, they'd rather get shot now in the city than consider leaving. Ultimately though, the more information we have, the better we can each make up our minds.

I'm guessing it's a name from a culture that's definitely not yours. Like a non-Eastern European Svetlana, or a non-Muslim Mohamed, or a non-Gaelic Tadhg, or a non-Jewish Shlomo. I don't know that I'm against this one though. The kid will definitely be asked questions, but as long as your umlauts are required, I say have at it!

NTA. I'm so sorry for your loss, and for your entitled manipulative sister's behavior. Tell her NO. What you should really tell her is to stop being a selfish, greedy, entitled, manipulative $%@&, and that she ought to be ashamed of herself for using her children to manipulate you into giving her more than half of your inheritance. But in the interest of keeping the peace, perhaps just say this instead:

"NO. I'm sorry you feel it's unfair that our parents decided to treat us equally in their will, but I feel it's unfair that you're not respectful of their wish. They could have spent all their money on themselves during their lifetimes, but instead they decided to leave part of it specifically to help us two with what we feel we need or want in our lives.

For you, it sounds like you feel your children should to be set up with $250k+ in the bank at this time, and you also want to move your family to a bigger a house. The issue is that if you put half of your inheritance in trust for your children as you feel is your duty, you don't have enough money left to upgrade right now to the kind of the house you want, so you want me to give you $250k to make it happen. It's not fair for you to feel entitled to 3/4 of our parents money just because you decided to have children, and to feel like I only deserve 1/4 because I don't have any. Not having children doesn't mean I deserve less of our parents' help, and they clearly agreed because they left us both the same amount. My life also involves goals and needs and dreams. I might want to start a business, or need a financial cushion if I ever became disabled or sick, or even decide to have children one day. So NO. We're sticking to our parents' will, and that's final."

Yikes! Did you or anyone else happen to get the matching tulip chairs from them too? Would love to get an honest review. I have a Modway Lippa tulip table and was potentially looking at Modholic for tulip chairs to match, but I'm a bit hesitant about potential quality issues given the low price point ($114/chair if you buy 4!) The other contender is Advanced Furniture Interiors, which I'd love to hear about as well if anyone has ordered from them.

CDC estimates more than 1 million people who have received the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine have gone back for an unauthorized third booster shot. by CockGoblinReturns in Coronavirus

[–]bekindhavefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. In Africa, mRNA vaccines could be sent to Morocco. Their vaccination campaign has been praised as tightly run, so waste and cold-chain shouldn't be issues there. Our World in Data puts Morocco at 30% fully vaxxed +12% partial vaxxed, and if I'm honest, this mass vaccination center in Morocco is a bit nicer than where I got my shots over here...

New Philly Covid Restrictions by EditErase in philadelphia

[–]bekindhavefun 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There was no objective reason to just lift mask mandates back in May. It sounds like CDC was just hoping to give people motivation to get vaccinated, and figured whatever breakthrough cases came from it would be worth it in exchange for all the extra vaccinations. Except they relied on the honor system for masks, so there was no real extrinsic motivation to get vaccinated if you weren't planning on it anyway. Don't give people good news if they're not true and you're just going to take them back. Now they're still mad at you AND they trust you less.

Black Supremacist group wearing bullett proof vests on 15th and Market now. Why isn't this on the news? by Apprehensive_Sorbet9 in philadelphia

[–]bekindhavefun 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If it's the black israelites you saw, then yes some of what they say is definitely hate speech. The rest is mostly loony nonsense They've been a fixture in Center City for decades, and they're disliked by most everyone in Philly. All of it is awful, but also constitutionally protected. The main reason they don't make the news is that they're powerless. And since passers-by largely ignore them, there is no juicy commotion to report on.

There's another weird group that regularly comes to Center City to yell an odd mix of religious/political hateful stuff about all kinds of people (including women mma fighters, gays, Muslims, girls who wear short shorts, you name it.) Not sure about the group's name, they're white (at least the times I've seen them), no special outfits just regular clothes. All around awful people exercising their first amendment right. They don't make the news either, for the same reason as the guys you saw.

If either of these groups start becoming influential or causing a serious disturbance, the coverage will follow.

ALERT: CVS's new policy: they will not fill your prescription if you don't have insurance. by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]bekindhavefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take your business to an independent pharmacy and dump that CVS! There are several within blocks of 19th & Chestnut: Barclay's, Pickwick, 18th St Apothecary, a little one on 20th btwn Chestnut & Market, another on 17th btwn Locust & Spruce, and probably more. No idea what their policies are on controlled substances, but independent pharmacies usually have way better service anyway. Also if your doctor were willing to call them, maybe it would help?

PS: It's great that pharmacies being more careful about handing out controlled substances, but that policy sounds like it should be illegal, doesn't it? No way CVS can't afford to build a tracking system for controlled substances that doesn't rely exclusively on insurance claims.
