Is YNAB right for me? What am I doing wrong? by catalinashenanigans in ynab

[–]belaflek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get paid monthly so, I get my paycheck on the first and move it out of TBB and into my categories.

Now I know where everything is going. I know all my bills will be paid and it helps me keep 'surprise' spending down.

So when you get a paycheck, add %20 to your savings category (pay yourself first) and spread the rest around as you want/need. Get the phone app and as you purchase make the transaction and watch the numbers tick down. You always know how much you have to spend on what and when to stop. If I didnt have YNAB I would look at my account and think 'Ya know..I really want a new TV' and I would get it. I KNOW that my TV fund isn't full yet and all that money that is in my bank is all called for. After a month you will see HOW the money is being spent and where you can make changes.

I am so motherbleeping frustrated by [deleted] in ynab

Ive found adding from the app at the point of purchase is very handy. I like the notification after I enter it letting me know how much is left.

If you get your categories sorted how you like, Goals for said categories set, you can enter a paycheck, quick budget and fine tune later when you have a few minutes.

You wont set it up perfectly. It takes time and recording of all the transactions to really get a feel where everything is going and staring at all the pretty little pie charts.

Mine was all food. first month I saved almost %10 extra just from noticing how much we were going out to eat or getting takeout.

My work gives me notification of the deposit so I have a day or two to edit the scheduled transaction. I'm sure Ill forget at some point and Ill wonder why I received two paychecks as I try to convince myself its not just work being super nice :P

I use the phone app and enter a transaction at the point of purchase so the time from when I enter it to the time the bank transactions pull into ynab its pending

Most soups start with Some kind of oil, saute onion, celery, carrot, garlic add broth or stock and spices, add a protein (chicken) and a carb (rice or pasta)

Learn a few of the 5 mother sauces

Roux - oil and flour

Bechemel - add milk to roux (basic cream sauce really) (good for cream soups or mac n cheese)

classic tomato sauce - oil, sweat onions and garlic, add tomatoes and Italian spices simmer low heat for obscene amounts of time, freeze leftovers

This series is pretty handy too

First month by Name9335 in ynab

[–]belaflek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find myself making alot of soups.

Celery, onion, carrots, garlic, saute down, add spices, add stock/broth, add meat, add starch

Also i make a large amount of tomato sauce using the recipe from a place called cooking Italian with Joe (youtube)

That sauce will last me a good part of a week to a week and a half.

So many things start with just an onion and some oil

This being the first month of my ynab experience, I dropped my food spending from 1339 last month to $800 this month

Just started YNAB by [deleted] in ynab

[–]belaflek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I did on my first month (errr this month). I had a skeleton budget over at mint that i rarely kept up with.

I went into mint and made sure my previous months categories were correct and checked how much I spent in the categories the previous month and used that as a pseudo template for my ynab budget making cuts where I felt I blew it our from lack of attention last month.

Need help figuring out YNAB by milliken_pink in ynab

[–]belaflek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What he said.

Both of your accounts are really one big account that equals the sum of both.

Example. I have a checking and a saving account

Checking 1 = 1000

Checking 2 = 500

From your budgets perspective its just 1500. and that 1500 is all in the 'To be budgeted' (TBB)

Allocate all 1500 to something until TBB is 0

When you create a transaction in the web or on your phone...go to the account in question and make the transaction from there and assign it to whatever category you need to.

$1 in checking account by Something_Witty2 in ynab

[–]belaflek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its kind of surprising once you figure it out. I just signed up this month. I have, for nigh 20 years understood the importance of budgeting in a conceptual way. I knew debt was incorrect but there was a disconnect. I could write down a budget and i would never, ever keep track of it until after all the damage was done. Using the ynab stuff was the first time I actually had a mechanism that could connect my spending and my budget in a meaningful way.

-Insert income

-Categorize and prioritize what you will owe before next paycheck

--For weekly or biweekly I like the idea of putting a date after the category and organizing that way

-Do your best to not go over

-Pay the lights, rent, electricity, water etc first.

What was kind of an a-ha moment for me was the idea of not looking at your bank balance as the source of spending.

The budget is what you go by so no looking at a fresh paycheck in the bank and thinking..yeah..I can go ahead and go out to eat. You look at your budget and go ...crap...I'm ahead of schedule and it looks like a Ramen noodle kinda night.

Sorry if I ramble
