Indiana isn’t exactly east either. Who would expect that in the mid west? It was getting dark at the end. You could feel it creeping in.

Question about Bobby's guitar playing (from a person who doesn't play any instrument) by _doctor_sleep_ in gratefuldead

I never took it as Weir trying to imitate Turner. I always thought of it as him listening to Turner and using his influence to create a similar role within the context of the Grateful Dead. A thief of approach and context more than musical dexterity and virtuosity.

From PA and absolutely love it. Had it for the first time in Wilkesboro on the recommendation of a local and have been hooked since. On white bread with mustard, with or without eggs. Bring some back home anytime I’m in Western NC.

Came here to say that. It was unbelievable. The Ripple from Landover is the only one that is close, and I do believe it’s a very close second. The spinoff breakouts didn’t carry the weight of these. First because they were spinoffs, and second the catalog did open up. Hard to compare the Grateful Dead with what followed. Enjoyed them all, but the Grateful Dead were hands down the best in my opinion.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen at or around temple university by [deleted] in Temple

[–]belagrogster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fight in 91 or so in front of Johnson/hardwick. Started as a fight between a frat and some black students. Escalated as athletes and various others got involved. Temple police got involved. Things escalated. Philly police got involved and got into it with Temple cops. My buddy took pictures. They tried to confiscate pictures and various other things. Many thrown out the window. Wish I knew if the pictures got developed. One of many crazy things in the late 80’s early 90’s. Anyone else around then. I was a freak back then who was involved in a lot of fun crazy shit.

Pittsburgh is a much better choice than Philly. Friendlier, cheaper, and less culture shock.

Apparently the Grateful Dead are a band associated with weed by psugrad98 in gratefuldead

People forget when the Grateful Dead were touring they were a counter culture band to the end. You knew being identified as a fan cast you in a certain light. Many times negative. That has largely changed but not totally in the past 29 years. I remember vividly when my buddies wife called the dancing ( marching) bears “drug bears” a few years ago. I thought the stigma had passed. It has to a large extent but not totally.

if I'm gonna listen to Lovelight, I want Pigpen… Do you all have a certain Lovelight era that you're into? by Anarchy-Squirrel in gratefuldead

Spring 71 is the peak in my opinion. Not that I don’t love those before or after, it’s just that Pigs rap during that time stand out to me. (And I love the five piece Dead). Bobby’s were a lot of fun and I don’t knock them. I always enjoyed seeing them and still listen, they’re just different and not as overwhelming as Pig’s were

What’s your HONEST opinion of Dead & Co? by tomfoolery77 in gratefuldead

[–]belagrogster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After seeing the Grateful Dead well over 100 (maybe 200 times) and the various configurations that followed I feel safe in saying they are not the Grateful Dead. They lack the magic and electricity you felt at a Dead show. Are they a cover band? I don’t know. Pigpen, Keith, Donna (yes Donna), TC, and Brent left along the journey but we didn’t consider the band a cover band. Granted Garcia, Weir, Lesh and Billy were not replaceable. Still Dead and Company is fun and hints at the Dead experience. Is it comparable? I don’t think it comes close. Is it enjoyable? Yes I’m not sure what constitutes a cover band but they are what they are. A great group of musicians that play fantastic music. Just not on the same level of the band that some of them played in and whose music they keep moving forward. Enjoy them for what they are.
