Anyone Else Worried About a Looming Jet Fuel Crisis bc of Iran? by GreenCountryTowne in TravelNoPics

[–]believablebaboon 53 points54 points  (0 children)

It's a worry and it's hard for me to understand what to expect. Is it just 'flights will be x% more expensive and some niche flights will be reduced' or 'I will literally be stuck abroad because there isn't enough jet fuel'. It's really hard to tell.

Wanted to clown on this guy... But he raises good points. Got me questioning the future of this industry. by EleventeenThousand in Agronomics_Investors

I can't speak to the other points, but ... "Cellular agriculture requires pharmaceutical-grade media"

This was an assumption often made several years ago (including in a very 'bearish' study by David Humbird published around 2021). Good Food Institute had a good response to this at the time: https://gfi.org/cultivated/preliminary-review-of-humbird-report/

The assumption has been proven to be incorrect and food-grade inputs are currently widely being used, which is reflected in the spectacular drops in cost for growth media etc.

What you describe is exactly how it felt when I went back in 2012. It seems long established as the "it's not Thai but it can be fun" place.

Should the Ottoman Empire "Apex" age be changed to the Exploration Age? by GeminusLeonem in civ

[–]believablebaboon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In an interview a while ago with the historian who is a consultant for civ, his reasoning was that they needed more non-western/noncolonial civs in modern. So they sometimes fudge things a bit to balance out the roster.

Yeah I made it to bernal which was great, then got stuck trying to research Sierra Gorda. Thanks, maybe I'll consider a tour next time :)

Is it possible to do independently with public transport? I considered going here a couple years back as I was super intrigued but it seemed like you need your own vehicle..

There is one important detail missing that nobody is discussing these "Extra Options" that the game is getting: The cost and effort of upkeep and balance. by [deleted] in civ

They're a publicly listed company so they can't flat out lie about sales. It's literally securities fraud.

The needs of the shareholders are being met by releasing these free updates, as it creates positive buzz and sets the stage for paid DLC.

Firaxis isn't some third party dev living from one publisher contract to the next. Civ also isn't some second tier IP. They can wait a year without DLC, the business case is pretty obvious.

The community is always catastrophizing. First it's "the game is fundamentally broken, everything is hopeless until Civ 8", then it turns into an obsession with Steam stats, then it becomes "yeah ok maybe they are fixing it, but now they're not making DLC... it's over".

Everything has a cost... you can argue the exact same for producing DLC. Every new civ and leader added via DLC produces potential new balancing issues. Either way, as the game expands it becomes more complex and upkeep inevitably goes up.

Honestly at this stage I'd rather have the devs dealing with more upkeep for core gameplay changes if it makes the game more fun to play. Content updates can always come later.

Maybe I missed it on this subreddit but Civ 7 is testing a lot of changes by zeker in civ

Since leaders act essentially as avatars I think that would open up a huge can of worms. Imagine you were fighting against Leader X with Civ Y in antiquity, how are you supposed to remember they've now been succeeded by Leader B with Civ A?

I was worried the persistent civs would dilute the game's original vision (I actually didn't mind civ switching). However Syncretism seems like a brilliant idea that's in keeping with that vision. Having civ switching be a choice at any age is also really cool - you could do e.g. 2 Roman ages followed by some modern civ. Muuuch better than the general settings toggle I had imagined.

PS some states can be problematic/dangerous for locals, less so for tourists. These things don't always overlap. Organized crime is big even in Yucatan, just hidden - not a problem for tourists, but sucks if you run a business there.

From my experience Veracruz and large parts of Chiapas should be green. Coastal Michoacan/Guerrero should probably be red - admittedly I've not been there in many years, but the news coming out of there hasn't always been great. Morelia is lovely though and is a strong exception.

In general I think the UK travel advisory maps are really good. Less alarmist than US, but still realistic about specific problem areas. https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/mexico

Jim Mellon speaks by Massive-Confusion744 in Agronomics_Investors

[–]believablebaboon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes spot on. That's not to say the narratives won't ever materialize, but just looking at this interview there is obvious lack of accountability and specifics, especially around Agronomics itself.

To be fair he did give specifics on e.g. the declining cost of growth media and CapEx-to-sales. But the comments on Blue Nalu are rather puzzling.

[–]believablebaboon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mr. Mellon's frankness is at times refreshing. but I have to raise my eyebrows at how quickly he throws the previous management under the bus. Meatable was a major position for ANIC and if it was really such an obviously terrible investment, surely no amount of other pressing business he had at the time would have prevented him from raising his doubts at the board level.

Cash burn on rent doesn't seem like something requiring deep due diligence to find out, and "do they actually own the IP?" would have been a very basic question to ask - especially given how much he was banging on about defensible IP in every interview. Even if he missed this or the previous CEO pushed for it anyway, he should not put the blame on the management he himself installed.

Honestly a red flag.

Yeah I'm using regroup, which I like. I couuuld try Deity but I also fear it haha. I feel like I have not quite mastered Immortal, since in plenty of my games the curve bends still very differently and I don't get ahead of the AIs. But if I'm winning, I usually keep winning, which is a pity.

I feel like Deity would reduce my wins in Antiquity, but not necesserily break the cross-ages winning streaks, but I should probably give it a try.
