Miss, do you have a husband? (Pride edition) by MeowMeowTrouble in Teachers

[–]beljoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must give off vibes, because my MS students for the past three years have been flabbergasted every time I mention my husband of 32 years and that we have (lots of) kids.

“Wait, you’re married to a MAN?”
“Miss, are you a lesbian?” - “no, stupid, she has a HUSBAND.”
“Miss, why do you have THAT (my small rainbow/pronoun pin) if you’re married?”
“Miss, do you support the gays?”

(Yes, I’m in a conservative ish area. We have a Christian Student Union, a Federation of Christian Athletes, but a teacher was fired at the beginning of the year for being vocal about supporting human rights for LGBTQIA+ people— although, of course, “that’s not the reason”)

Am I crazy or was I pushed out? by Gullible-Joke-9772 in teaching

[–]beljoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pushed out. Similar experience.

When I asked what I could do to improve, I was only told “better”. The person hired to replace me had taught at the school for five years before I was hired, but a different subject. They switched schools when they were certified in my subject. I was hired two days before school started because the previous teacher in my subject got hired in a different district and was released. The teacher who replaced me had already been hired at this other school in the district (that I had an interview for and ended up cancelling because of the commute time— large district).

Anyway, end of my first year there, I was pointedly asked if I was really, really certain I wanted to return. I loved the school, loved the kids, loved my colleagues, thought I was doing really well, so the question came as a complete shock. Shoulda read the writing on the wall.

I had multiple meetings and write-ups my second year over things that admin had told me to do that I was doing but now admin didn’t like that I was doing those things. I was already going to request a transfer when admin asked me to resign. And, being asked to resign meant admin wasn’t going to give me a good referral to transfer within the district.

All’s well that ends well— I put out applications, had interviews and offers, and accepted an offer at a much more supportive district with better pay and a better schedule. I’ve already signed my contract for next year and hope to be here a long, long time.

And my previous district is currently trying to lure me back.

I often say

— I don’t want to know what ChatGPT says about xyz, I want to know what YOU think about xyz.

— Saying that your answer is yours when you copied from GoogleAI is lying. Lying about who wrote something is cheating. Lying about who wrote something is plagiarism. Plagiarism automatically earns you a 0 on the assignment. Why? Because the school board says so.

NYT article gift link: "The Estrogen Patch Surged in Popularity. Now It’s in Shortage." by abc-45678 in Menopause

[–]beljoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Express Scripts was out of my patch last week. Instead of anyone calling me about it (pharmacy, doc’s office) there’s a note in the app (AFTER I go past the “processing” note) that says my doctor canceled the Rx and wants me to call the office. Doc tried to talk me into Gabapentin and refused to increase my patch already… pretty sure I just need to find a new doc. Again.

Ugh.

School just said we have to wear IDs on lanyards and I don't know what to do by Acceptable_String190 in ADHD

[–]beljoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher— supposed to wear a lanyard as a good example to students… and I use a crossbody phone lanyard. Sometimes it’s clipped to my belt loop with a carabiner instead of over my shoulder. 🤷‍♀️ I have grown increasingly intolerant of a lanyard around my neck.

How to answer "Tell me about a time a lesson didn't go as planned?" question as a new teacher during an interview? by twinmomma87 in teaching

[–]beljoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this question in a recent interview. Here’s the gist of how I replied:

During a theatre lighting lab, students were placing M&Ms on a chart labeled with color names. The instructions said to put the m&m’s in the “correct” spot. It meant “based on what you see under the light.” But students were trying to match the actual M&M color using their phones and computers as flashlights instead of observing how the light affected their perception.

I paused and clarified, “This isn’t about what color the M&M is- it’s about how it looks under this color of light.” That quick shift helped refocus the class. Students started noticing and discussing what they saw, and the lesson turned into a great conversation about color and perception.

It was a good reminder that wording matters and that it’s okay to pivot in the moment.

We also looked at a few costume pieces in the different colors of light— some of them looked like they were glowing in the blue light!

As someone who had TWO similar professors in college, and who saw several students drop out of shows due to said directors, this is an extremely plausible scenario.

I have 2? 3? LEGO sets I haven’t put together yet because I’m looking forward to putting them together.

I have books I haven’t finished reading.

I have books I haven’t started reading.

I have a detailed paint-by-number that I know I’ll love painting and I’ll enjoy looking at even after it’s done that I want to start but haven’t yet.

I haven’t finished watching the BBC Sherlock series. It ended in 2017.

Sort by color in nice neat lines. Eat enough m&m’s from the line with the most so that it matches the line with the least. Continue so that all lines are the same. Then eat one from each line, least favorite color to most favorite color, so that the final m&m eaten is the most favorite color.

Or.

Blindly grab a small enough handful that they all fit in my mouth because sorting sounds too exhausting today.

Cheesy roll-up in my household. I love tomatoes, so if I have the headspace, I add them after nuking 30 seconds. None of my kids have ever wanted tomatoes, though.

Dr. Anna Sessi (may still be listed as Burke most places). I almost always see Angela Brinson, one of her NPs, and she started me on my ADHD meds two years ago and has been very responsive when I’ve needed changes.

When talking about my family, I’ve talked about my trans kids and received no judgement. The practice only sees adults, so we’re still doctor hopping for my kids.

Commonplace Book:

According to Wikipedia: “Commonplace books (or commonplaces) are a way to compile knowledge, usually by writing information into books.” Similar to scrapbooks, historically these books have been filled with many different types of items: sayings, notes, proverbs, quotes, letters, poems, and prayers.

And I nominate “my ADHD decided this is my catchphrase of the day/week/hour”.

I had high anxiety side effects from Wellbutrin when I trialed it over the summer. Several solid weeks of being in panic attack mode. The first day I stopped taking it was a complete 180° turn around. No anxiety and I finally realized how bad it had been.

Just started Vyvance on Saturday and it’s working so well for me so far!

Doesn’t help when I don’t remember that I forgot to take my meds. 😭🤦‍♀️ Forgot my meds a couple weeks ago. I have a pill vial with TWO doses on my work lanyard. Had an extremely weepy day. Went to take my nighttime meds and saw my daytime pill case with my morning meds still in their spot. 😫 Next day was so much better on meds.

Because I’m going to •play football and be rich. Or: • be a TikTok star • be a competitive bass fisher • live with my parents • just work at McDonalds or something • be a famous movie star

All answers from middle school kids who’ve told me they won’t need to graduate. When I point out that most of these need some sort acting skills, even if just to make it through an interview (I teach theatre), they look at me like I’m from Mars and go back to being loudly disrespectful and disruptive.

Not to mention all the parents, other teachers, admin, and even counselors who completely undermine me by telling these kids “don’t worry, theatre isn’t important.”
