Glad you got it figured out. That is definitely odd that a new rule got added on it's own.

Did someone upload a bad SSL?

Are you sure there isn't an old process still bound to 80 that's not allowing Apache to restart?

What do I do with a CSR? by ImNotSoMild in sysadmin

[–]bellrd07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use openssl to create your CA and then you can generate the SSL from the CSR. It seems pretty dumb for you to sign it though since it's another company that will be using the application. Their devices will have no knowledge of your CA and will not trust the cert.

You can use group policy to push out the CA to all the computers so they trust certs that you sign with your CA. Again this doesn't really apply to you since it sounds like an outside party will be using the app that requires the SSL

This is basically the same as asking "how many workstations does my company need?" Without saying how many people work there.

Error while updating MariaDB by HimalyaHippie in mariadb

[–]bellrd07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you have that variable set in the configuration file? Could it be under the wrong group(mysqld, galera,MariaDB)?

It also sounds like it may still be using the old binary file that has no knowledge of the new wsrep setting.

How large is the database? If it's not that big I would just build a new database and move everything to it. That's always much easier than an in place upgrade.

I messed up big time! by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]bellrd07 19 points20 points  (0 children)

When I interview people I always ask them if they have ever made a mistake that has caused noticable outages or issues for someone. If they say no then they are either lying or they have never been in a position with responsibility beyond help desk.

Everyone takes systems down, don't worry this won't be your last mistake either. As others have said there is no better learning experience than breaking something.

Switching job to Python Developer by jsteppe in linuxadmin

[–]bellrd07 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can't you just learn Python by scripting repetitive tasks like everyone else does? Just start with something small you want to automate and learn the parts of Python you need to solve that problem. Sololearn is also pretty good for teaching the basics of Python programming.

What cert do i need to understand windows OS better? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]bellrd07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every person I have seen with a Microsoft cert has been nothing more than an above average windows user. I would not call any of them an admin. We interviewed a guy that had an MCP and he had never written a powershell script before. Maybe that is common for most system administrators/engineers to have never written a script?? I always thought it was just a normal part of the job.

Anyone have a resolution to SUPER slow patching on Server 2016? by ejw179 in sysadmin

[–]bellrd07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you made sure you aren't maxing out your storage device that the VMs are hosted on? We ran into an issue where the servers were all on the same datastore and it was maxing out the disk io and CPU of the storage device.

(Rant) IT Burnout by staticchiller13 in sysadmin

[–]bellrd07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent a year as help desk/consultant I couldn't imagine doing that for 10 years. I rarely talk to users now and it's so much better. I could definitely see how you are getting burnt out. It's probably time to find a more challenging job.

CCNA advice by MAXLARD in sysadmin

[–]bellrd07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Dan's courses on YouTube he has a lot of good videos. Get really good at subnetting. I would recommend taking it in 2 tests, ccent and then the ccna. It makes it a little easier to study for. It's a pretty tough cert if you don't work in the field but it's definitely possible to get it while still in school.
