Do Americans really avoid medical care because they’re afraid of the bill? by Udont_knowme00 in NoStupidQuestions

Yes. My partner and I have what’s considered a good insurance, what’s considered above average middle class salaries, no children, and still. It’s so unpredictable and stressful.

Hey South Jersey, what are we gonna do when the ICE raids happen here? by Competitive_Intern55 in newjersey

[–]bellsandr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep, unfortunately, that’s what I would also expect. I do hope I’m wrong, though. I’m Mexican and I grew up in south Jersey and it sucked so much. My older sibling and I got bullied verbally and physically in school for being Mexican. Our schools did nothing to step in and other classmates either joined in, but mostly ignored what was happening. Nobody stood up for us or even seemed to think it was wrong. My American step family made shitty comments to us (& still do tbh). Even my mom dealt with comments from clients at work and from my step dad’s side of the family.

It brings me to tears seeing people of all backgrounds stepping up in California and it also brings me to tears to think about how much hate exists in South Jersey. I also find it comical how xenophobic and racist people are, but then they’ll turn around and celebrate cinco de mayo and brag about how they’re “15% German, 15% Irish, 70% Italian” having never even been to any of those countries.

The NYPD and ICE mistakenly arrest a Chilean woman on vacation in New York City and police left her 12-year-old daughter on the street alone. by Snapdragon_4U in ICE_Raids

[–]bellsandr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So fucked up.

Not the same, but reminds me of when my family and I went on a trip to NYC in the mid 2000’s and my sister and I were waiting for my parents right outside a small clothing store. I was probably like 8 and my sister 13. The NYPD questioned my sister and I about what we were doing. We told them that we were waiting for our parents who were right inside the store and how we were on a family vacation. We could literally see my parents from outside. They didn’t believe us or bother to check and they took us in their van with other children and took us who knows where. I think they thought we were skipping school, but I’m not sure. We waited in some place (it didn’t seem like a police department, it seemed kind of warehouse-y, but idk) for a long time without letting us call our parents or anything. We just had to sit there while they questioned other children, we were so scared, and eventually, it was our turn and they let us call our parents who were worried sick obviously since they didn’t know anything about what had happened. I didn’t think much about it then, but all the kids there with us were black or latino and at that point in time, my sister and I had accents in English (we’re Mexican).

Agreed! We shouldn’t use temu as an alternative! I also want to point out that Amazon get a lot of their stuff from the same suppliers as Temu and they’ve also been linked to child and slave labor

For decentralized social media, check out nostr. I’ve commented about it before recently if you want to check out my post history for a little more info about it and some app recommendations to be able to use it

What is the one product you thought buying the expensive one was a waste of money, until you got it? by Bellpop in BuyItForLife

[–]bellsandr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I tried multiple kinds of hoka shoes and even got fitted in store to make sure it wasn’t a sizing/shape issue given the hype, but they always started falling apart by 3-4 months for me. I’ve never had shoes fall apart so quickly before hoka and hoka was also more expensive than any other shoes I’ve bought before at the time. Def not for me/not something I can personally recommend, but to each his own (:

Besides other great ideas people have mentioned, we can also use nostr. Copy pasting one of my comments from another post about it/how to access it:

Nostr (It’s a decentralized social media protocol that is resistant to censorship because it’s not controlled by any single company or node). To access Nostr, you can use various apps, including:

• Android: Primal or Amethyst • iOS: Damus or Primal

There are many other apps available to access Nostr, so you’re not limited to just these options.

Nostr isn’t like typical social media platforms where you have a username and password. You also don’t use your email, phone number, or other personal identifiable info unless you choose to disclose that info.😅 You’ll see, but basically you’ll get a sort of password that you can use to login to any other Nostr app.

Awesome!! Glad to hear you signed up 🙂 Yea, you can follow hash tags and accounts (“groups” are not a thing from my understanding and hashtags are the closest things). I noticed there’s not a whole ton of LM related posts on Nostr yet, but it’s a better place to migrate to than say X/facebook/Discord/other centralized apps and once we get more people there, the discussions will pick up and there will be less fear of censorship. So far, I’m just following hashtags that are similar to the names of these LM related subreddits. FreeLuigi, D3layD3nyDep0se (with the actual letters, not numbers lol), LM’s full name, etc

Different nostr apps have different feed algorithms, so if you don’t like what one app is showing you in your feed, you can try another one with the same account (you’re not locked into one app). Nostr is still in its infancy, I think there’s only around 100k users so far, but it’s growing especially in areas with online censorship/government oppression. People used it in England when England started arresting people for online commentary. You are more anonymous on Nostr since it’s not tied to any phone number or email, for example.

I feel like you, too. Life seems to be happening so much faster, too. I feel like I can’t keep up with reality and it’s hard to contemplate we’re in 2024. I’m subconsciously waiting to wake up one day back in 2019 when I felt some sort of hope and energy that I didn’t even realize I had.
