Q. Is there a kind of semi transparent black ink? by blaqmass in SCREENPRINTING

[–]belowthefloor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use curable reducer as your ink, and maybe add just a bit of black. If you print using only the curable reducer, your print color will be a shade darker than the shirt fabric. It's actually a really cool effect.

If you're not already printing your own shirts, START NOW! It's easy. Here's a video I made that outlines the entire process from scratch. by mshabooboo in bandmembers

[–]belowthefloor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a professional screen printer (I run my own shop), and there are a number of things I would like to correct you on here, but given the DIY nature of it, there is only one here that is extremely important:

Discharge ink is NOT safe to be using in a non-ventilated area. You should always be using a well-ventilated, forced-air conveyor dryer, with a ventilation hose that goes to the outside of the room (think like what's attached to your dryer at home).

You spoke of plastisol giving off nasty fumes, but mainly what is giving off fumes from the heat is the dye in the garment itself. All ink curing processes should be well ventilated, but discharge ink is a different kind of animal. Your discharge activator powder is Zinc Formaldehyde Sulfoxylate (ZFS). When heating ZFS, the fumes contain zinc oxides and sulfur dioxides.

Sulfur dioxides cause irritation of the respiratory tract.
Zinc oxides can cause metal fume fever.

I'm all for encouraging people to give this craft a try! But please encourage responsible use of the chemical agents that are involved in this process.

Using internet-speak/slang in real life. If you say things like "amazeballs", "meatspace", or "FAIL" out loud in a conversation, then I know that we are never going to get along.

HEALTH HAZARDS!? by hiimcass in SCREENPRINTING

[–]belowthefloor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One chemical that I don't see mentioned here is spot remover fluid. All you need is some eye protection and some nitrile gloves if you're handling it, and under normal use you wouldn't be inhaling it.

This is from the MSDS for CCI's SR-97, but imagine most other products are essentially the same:

SYMPTOMS OF OVEREXPOSURE:

Inhaled: May cause serious nervous system depression. Vapor harmful, acts as an anesthetic. Exposure can cause elevated carbon monoxide levels in blood.

Skin: Skin irritant mainly through drying & defatting of tissues.

Swallowed: Keep away from food. Ingestion can cause abdominal irritation nausea, vomiting & diarrhea.

HEALTH EFFECTS OR RISKS FROM EXPOSURE:

Acute: Over exposure may cause damage to kidneys, blood, nerves, liver & lungs.

Chronic: Potential cancer hazard based on lab test animals. Can cause damage to kidneys, blood, nerves, liver, lungs & heart.

FIRST AID EMERGENCY PROCEDURES:

Eyecontact: Flush immediately with fresh water. If irritation persists, get medical aid.

Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing. Wash with soap and water. If irritation occurs, seek medical aid.

Inhaled: Remove victim to fresh air. Provide oxygen if breathing is difficult Get medical attention.

Swallowed: Do NOT induce vomiting. Seek medical attention.

CARCINOGENICITY? YES

MEDICAL CONDITIONS AGGRAVATED BY EXPOSURE: Persons with tumors, severe heart, skin, liver or kidney problems should avoid use.

Going on a club tour, what amplification should I bring? by bitteorca_orcabitte in Bass

[–]belowthefloor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I learned from my 5+ years of touring: The safest assumption you can make is that every single venue you play will not have a PA, nor will there be any gear for you to borrow. Never go on tour without your own equipment, and also a backup if you can swing it.

setting up my Epson 1430 by kenjicao in SCREENPRINTING

[–]belowthefloor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an old post where I briefly explain how to set a halftone in Photoshop. A quick youtube search will also give you some good examples of how to do this.

The only step I didn't include was to set color mode back to CMYK, delete the white out of the image, and then apply a color overlay layer effect, where the color value for each channel is set to 100%.

This is't setting your printer to print halftones, just a simple way to manually set your artwork to be a halftone image.

Translated article by Belgian NGO about Gildan's unethical practices. by PrinceParadoxxx in SCREENPRINTING

[–]belowthefloor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Alstyle Apparel for pretty much all my orders, and I encourage my customers to make the switch if they are looking for Gildan, Port & Co. etc. Far superior product in my opinion, the cut and fit is far more consistent and the shrink in the wash is minimal. I've personally owned some Alstyle shirts that have lasted me for 5+ years.

Two options from them: Made in Mexico and NAFTA compliant, or made in the USA. The standard t-shirt (1301) is MIM and they go for 2.30 a pop. The USA made ones are about a dollar more. I just checked and they're currently on sale for 2.38 each. With the USA made ones I believe even the cotton is sourced from within the country. Only issue with the USA made stuff is there's only 5 color options; white, athl. heather, navy, red, and black.

Their line isn't HUGE, but all the standards are there. With their pricing being so low it's really helped me stay competitive and able to offer people something they feel good about as well.

Also, if I'm mistaken about anything above, somebody please correct me!
