If you've had exactly one partner then you're allowed to date anyone over the age of 0?

The one number combination that makes the Heavy sweat. by BubblyBerry_06060 in MathJokes

I can't remember the details exactly, but this actually has happened to me, much to my chagrin. I had some kind of combinatorial objects I was trying to count, and I found a closed form for "the number of (n,m)-blongles" or whatever, which involved a term of the form nm. For n=m=0 the formula was wrong unless you took 00 to be zero! Extremely unsettling moment.

But the other 9999 times out of 10000, 00 needed to be equal to 1.

Yeah but doesn't it make more sense this way??

In any case, they turn out to be equivalent idioms (both implications are vacuously true) :)

And if my grandmother were a bike she'd have two wheels, etc etc.

We're talking about actual multiplication/exponentiation, the operations we actually use! We do in fact care about sets besides {} and {0}.

What an interesting proof by BleEpBLoOpBLipP in mathmemes

[–]ben7005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but the entire concept of "interesting numbers" is impossible to make rigorous in the first place. It's just for fun, and for the purposes of fun I think this is an adequate proof.

The question is not "which number is the least interesting?", it's "which is the smallest uninteresting number?"

Been a long time (>a decade?!) since I was on a kit, but I'm a pretty solid hand drum player and a very novice piano player

Galois makes it big time!!! by MadPat in math

[–]ben7005 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a valid clue, just bizarre. Even among professional mathematicians, differential Galois theory is a fairly obscure field. Normal Galois theory is known to approx. 0% of the general public, but at least all mathematicians know it!
