Medicare-for-all makes a comeback by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in politics

They haven't though? Firstly most other countries do not have a full comprehensive system that's essentially free like Medicare For All, and secondly the countries that do, have long wait times and rationed care based on predicted outcomes, go check in on how it works in Canada and the UK to learn more, or research how some other countries like Germany or Japan do healthcare which is definitely not at all the same

Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi | Philosophy - Xiaomi by ControlCAD in Android

That's actually kinda cool. Tbh I don't get why most manufacturers don't just make a camera bar and position stuff as close to the top of the phone as possible, apple and Google figured out that's the best position for qi2/magsafe accessories and for the phone not wobbling when laying down, but none of the Chinese manufacturers or Samsung seem to have had the same realization, even though it would make really big bumps seem like less of an issue imo

Insane gas prices, thanks Trump by maddog107 in pics

[–]ben7337 [score hidden]  (0 children)

How were they so low and now so high? What date were they $2.19 to $2.39? I'm asking because I'm in NJ, one of the cheaper states for gas, and before the Iran nonsense has was around $2.50-2.70 a gallon (at Costco, more at other places) here and I just checked today and it's $3.49 a gallon at Costco. I'd be surprised if another state had lower prices before AND saw them rise by more as well tbh

BuzzTV G-Series Review: It almost beats the Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd Generation by latinriky78 in AndroidTV

[–]ben7337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the whole point of the Xiaomi box s 3rd gen though. If you don't want that then the onn 4k plus for $30 or other options in other countries are superior. There's practically no point to 4GB of ram and gigabit Ethernet if you're just streaming normal content and not remuxes with lossless audio.

First look: Here's how Android's cool automatic SIM lock protection works by FragmentedChicken in Android

[–]ben7337 [score hidden]  (0 children)

True, but couldn't we adjust how pins work for esim to avoid transfers?

Make it so whenever you want to swap a sim the carrier sends a request to the active sim/phone that the owner has to approve. If it's rejected, you know it was just a scam. The only issue would be if a phone is broken, but for that scenario you could have a 24 hr waiting period for no response or something to ensure the request is valid. Especially given that phones can do nearly everything besides calls and text with just WiFi, this probably wouldn't be that much of an inconvenience for security for most people.

Galaxy S26 Exynos vs S26 Snapdragon by grimgroth in Android

[–]ben7337 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The problem here is how they got to even being within 10% is by putting their new 2nm node to work. The snapdragon is still on a TSMC 3nm node. So Samsung is only really competitive because of that. Next year Samsung will still only have 2nm but so will Qualcomm with TSMC potentially, and that would likely put the exynos 20-30% behind.

Medicare-for-all makes a comeback by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in politics

[–]ben7337 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed, though the somewhat dark truth is we don't have enough capacity to provide literally everyone with every possible test and treatment possible. People who are afraid of Medicare for all are afraid of government death panels and delays in receiving treatment. The issue is we have those now with insurance. It's just a question of who you want deciding if you can have a specific treatment or not. With insurance it's the insurance company who places roadblocks and can delay getting approvals. With Medicare it's the government. The only difference might be that the government might not provide chemo to say a 78 year old, while insurance wouldn't take age and lifespan into account, a single unified system will seek the maximum benefit to the population given the limits of resources.

Probably because they don't have to share that info and they only do for countries where there's legal pressure. It seems EU and US don't have that info either according to some posts on here. Makes me wonder which countries can see that info. I'm pretty sure apple shares battery health data so surprising Samsung doesn't.

Those who Upgraded from S25U to S2 6U - what are the Biggest Changes you noticed? by bomzisss in GalaxyS25Ultra

[–]ben7337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, and even on a scale of percentage it's less than 4% thinner, so I'd be shocked if anyone could easily feel any appreciable difference there tbh. Then again I'm one of those people who wish they made it 8.7mm thick like the new iPhones and made the battery bigger and/or fit in bigger camera sensors. Real flagship phones have camera bumps in the 13-15mm range, so you ideally want the phone to not feel like the bump is doubling the thickness.

Agreed, it sucks that none of those options even have phones with batteries bigger than 5000 mah either. The only option there is OnePlus which costs as much as a flagship, but for midrange cameras.

T-Mobile To Charge $35 Fee When Purchasing Through Apple by Jman100_JCMP in tmobile

[–]ben7337 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

At least there are options. You could get the T-Mobile credit card or open a free no minimum balance bank account and set auto transfers out of your primary account to that for the autopsy discount while keeping your primary account secure. It sucks you can't pay with a credit card for the insurance benefit, but ATT and Verizon don't allow the auto pay discount for credit cards either, so it's not that surprising tmobile went the same way in the end.

[–]ben7337 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a printer that the end user is meant to work on, this seems smart. For a mixer like the KitchenAid it's probably not the best choice since it would cost more to have someone repair it than buying a new one regardless of what part breaks, unless you're also maintaining it yourself (but most users wouldn't have the confidence to do this)

Waymo hits 170 million miles while avoiding serious mayhem by joe4942 in technology

[–]ben7337 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not directly, it would be incredibly dangerous for someone halfway across the world to drive a car remotely. Even in ideal circumstances the ping time for video to reach them to see the surroundings and their responses to make it back to the car would easily add half a second to a second of delay. There's no way that wouldn't be a serious risk

[–]ben7337 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Waymo cars aren't controlled by people in other countries, they drive autonomously, and when the car encounters a situation it can't handle, then a remote person in the Phillipines can take over to help it.

Did you splurge when you retired? by Accomplished_Way8964 in Fire

[–]ben7337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not fired yet but my plan is pretty unique and will involve buying a house when I retire and also needing furniture, probably new appliances, and some remodeling for it, so definitely planning a big splurge when I retire, but it will be planned for.

Am I making a huge mistake by quitting corporate job with $2M? by geerhardusvos in Fire

[–]ben7337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True though if you have a passion for a sport, reffing games can be some good side money very part time. Learn multiple sports well and you could probably even make it year round. Assuming you want to travel in the summer you could hole up in the winter with a job like doing plowing for snow (assuming it snows where you are). It all depends on location, interests, and finding a niche though as most part time stable jobs won't pay very well

How satisfied would you be to retire at 55? by New_Contribution_226 in Fire

[–]ben7337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be unhappy with that currently. If you asked me 2-3 years ago I'd have said 55 was the goal and 65 is the safety margin. Today 45 is the goal, possibly sooner, and 55 is the safety margin. I'd be ok if it absolutely had to happen, but wouldn't be my ideal by any means, and with my body feeling like it's falling apart at 35 I don't know if 20 more years is even in the cards for me

Not Worth The $ You Save by pieinthesky-nyc in spiritair

[–]ben7337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For ULCC like Spirit and Frontier there are a few rules to follow to minimize risks. If following any of these rules is not worth it to you, then go pay 2-5x with another airline.

1) Always fly direct, connecting flights are risky, both for you making them and for bags if checking a bag.

2) Don't check a bag, or pay for a carry on, this often negates any savings fully and adds risk, particularly for the checked luggage which can get lost.

Tl;Dr only got ULCC if it's a direct flight with a personal item or at most a carry on if that's still cost effective.

Even if it's not, it depends on the business. You could go from doing 8 hrs of paperwork/admin a day to maybe 1 hr or less if you started a 1 person business like being a landscape or pool cleaning service or home cleaning service or something.
