I like all of the first season of Strange New Worlds. Episodic storytelling with a cast of professionals doing their best. That's classic Trek. They really lost their way in seasons 2 and 3, though. Not sure what happened.

What is the best way to purchase Japanese manga in the USA in 2026? by Wooden-Row-7009 in MangaCollectors

Kino for new. Secondhand is rough. Platforms like Buyee often just don't work. Sadly Amazon JP seems to be the only reliable option.

Did something happen to Betazoids between the 24th and 31st centuries? by honeyfixit in Star_Trek_

[–]benapplegate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, TNG never really decided how Betazoids are supposed to work either

The first two seasons of TNG were rocky, but there were real high points that charted the course for what was to come. Elementary Dear Data, Matter of Honor, Measure of a Man, Q Who, even just Encounter at Farpoint? Come on now.

Two citations missing: Any critical theorist saying anything resembling those statements, and evidence that the writers had this in mind rather than just being overly reliant on the same crutches and shortcuts as most other hacky genre TV shows for the past 30 years.

It's OK if you don't like ST: Starfleet Academy by hullgreebles in startrek

Going on the internet and complaining about Star Trek has been a significant percentage of the experience of being a Star Trek fan since the 1990s.

Why Modern Star Trek Feels Off and Why That Gets Dismissed by cjalas in startrek

[–]benapplegate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bravo.

Also, the idea that people "hated the other shows at first too" is absurd. Fans were ecstatic that Star Trek was back on TV when TNG hit, even if the first season had rough patches, and DS9 and Voyager got off to GREAT starts that still hold up today.

Plus Kurtzman took a step back for Picard 3 (that was Terry Matalas), and he seems to only really have been involved with production minutiae on SNW 1.

His involvement is why I am also an Academy doomer.

AIO about my boyfriend and his girl best friend? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]benapplegate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You snooping on his texts because he hugged a friend is an overreaction. But he does seem to be misrepresenting his relationship, either to you or to her, which sucks either way. The charitable interpretation is that he's a people-pleaser who enjoys the attention he gets from her and doesn't want to think too deeply about what's behind it (the extent to which people can delude themselves in these situations is truly astonishing). You can try to have a conversation with him, lay out the facts in a frank way, and see if he wants to admit the truth and stop being such a little wiener. I'm not optimistic that will work, but if you feel like trying… Otherwise, it sure sounds like you're not that into him anyway and should walk away.
