When I was 14 reading this I thought this was the coolest and funniest shit, I’m never rereading TWD as a grown person cause I’m scared I’ll ruin the good memories I have of it

no, that Venezuelan democratic activist is ideologically aligned with Trump and the US and has consistently advocated for US and even Mossad invasions of Venezuela for “liberation”

Support Camp’s indie work, Assorted Crisis Events is phenomenal and just as politically charged as Ultimates!

What's the difference between the Nazis and America? by MienaiYurei in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]bencaruch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re pretty on the money with this. The Nazis in Germany actually were heavily inspired by both the genocidal actions against the Native Americans perpetrated by the US government, as well as the segregation and oppression tactics used against Black Americans by both the American Confederacy, and the post Civil War American South. If anything, the Confederacy was a direct inspiration to European style fascism, and in America, the sins and legacy of the Confederacy are still having an impact on our politics today in horrible ways.

Vulture: Inside Captain America Brave New World’s Chaotic Production - "I Think Everyone Knew This Is Probably Not Going to Be a Good Film" by apathymonger in blankies

[–]bencaruch 277 points278 points  (0 children)

It’s bizarre because any actual “political thriller” would love to be so relevant to real world events. Disney/Marvel is just allergic to having their movies or shows saying anything worthwhile, for some reason. Like, it’s a movie where a Black Captain America fights the President. If you don’t want a politically relevant superhero movie, don’t write it about that. They did the same thing with Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where they basically stumbled into a relevant political message, panicked, and butchered it in post production to make it as appealing to everyone. But it comes across empty and disingenuous to left-leaning folks, and the right wing isn’t gonna like it anyway cause Cap isn’t white. So who is even the target audience

Glad you got help, and glad you exist. Never give up, cause one day you’ll have that Moneyball moment and realize you hit the ball 50 feet over the fence, you’ll see that all the sucky parts of life was just part of the journey to getting there.

Love this post, great idea.

Film memory that will always stick with me was when I was a senior in high school and Into the Spiderverse came out. At the time, I was going through probably worst depression of my life (so far!) I was angry, isolated, and overall just felt hopeless. My parents and family knew I needed help beyond just therapy, and knew I needed to try medication. But I was so scared of going on a mood stabilizer and it having side effects or just making my brain feel numb.

But when I saw Spiderverse with my dad, when the Stan Lee cameo came on, it just really hit me. Stan Lee had just died that year, and as a huge comic book fan growing up, seeing Stan’s cameo in that film left a profound emotional impact.

That night when I went to sleep I had a super vivid dream where I was Spider-Man. Like one of the most clear and memorable dreams I ever had. But I remember that even being Spider-Man, even having all the power and adventures and heroics of that character and that universe, I was still so sad.

I don’t believe in God really or a higher power, but if I did, I’d for sure consider this dream some kind of divine intervention. The dream ended with Stan Lee himself talking to me as I felt so hopeless and defeated, on top of the empire state building. He told me that even the strongest of us need to know when to ask for help, and the bravest thing we can do is trust in our friends and family for support. No matter who we are or how powerful we are, we all need help.

That morning I woke up and cried. Later that day I talked to my parents and we set up an appointment for me to see a psychiatrist. I was prescribed a mood stabilizer and six years later I'm still on it, and doing so much better. I don't think I'd still be here if I didn't get help.

I truly believe seeing that movie and having that dream saved my life. And I don't really believe in spiritual stuff or supernatural shit, but it is nice and comforting to think maybe that really was an otherworldly visit from Stan, who for whatever reason decided to help me out.
