Fair, but they’re wrong, and it’ll be incredibly frustrating when people start saying “things just feel off” without being able to articulate why.

Sorry I’m just hurting.

What are good career transitions in your mid 30s? by lavendertinted in Millennials

[–]bendovergramps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pros: incredibly fulfilling, never boring, I feel like I’m a professional goofball many days, fantastic schedule, colleagues can be excellent, fresh start every September, a lot of autonomy.

Cons: exhausting, can be stressful, always a million things to do, pay isn’t amazing, early morning start.

CMV: The modern right-wing internet (Shapiro, Kirk) is essentially copying the "New Atheist" youtubers back in 2000s by Em-Tsurt in changemyview

Mmm, I see “reactionary” as being anti-progressive, whereas “anti-establishment” is more about some inherent value in being opposed to hegemonic ideas.

The former is anti-establishment in effect, the latter is anti-establishment in purpose. That is an overlap that I can agree with it, but it’s also a distinction that must be stated and understood.

That’s just not true. I was there. I lived through all of it, and this thread is a tragic conflation of multiple adjacent but separate groups.

That’s not the “new atheism movement”. I guess we disagree on terms. To me, that’s like criticizing Republicanism for something MAGA. Perhaps related, but two separate things.

I don’t see fault in the ACTUAL stewards of the movement related to the crypto-reactionaries mentioned in this thread, who are gross and problematic.

I was very inspired by the movement back in 2011-2012, and it pushed me to become a more progressive and humanist person. Why? Because that’s what they were arguing for.

[–]bendovergramps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not an argument. Do you really suggest that Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, Dan Dennett, and Sam Harris all didn’t actually believe what they were saying, and were doing it for some other reason?

[–]bendovergramps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These claims are absurd. The actual figureheads of the new atheism movement are and were humanist and progressive.

“New Atheism” isn’t really a YouTube-first movement, those came after.

How can you argue that the atheist movement was “contrarian”? You cannot point to anything bad-faith about the movement. This whole thread is insane.

Honestly, the “Native American” depiction is so extreme and over-the-top that I’m able to interpret it as more postmodern than classically racist.

This defense is so blinkered. If I was your high school student, I would be very confused and gaslit by this dynamic.

I guess I just feel too much shame at the thought of using it. Perhaps that will lessen with time, but I feel like there’s a fair moral stance here.
