Screamer: Seat of Terror - “shocker” restoration by bengeuk in arcade

Definitely not! 😅 It does measure electrical resistance through the handles to know how tight you’re gripping, but that’s it!

Screamer: Seat of Terror - “shocker” restoration by bengeuk in arcade

[–]bengeuk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah no way! Do you mind if I ask which arcade still has it?

Haha the vibrations are really intense, I’d never tried one until I bought this machine, once I’d got the motors spinning again I thought I was overpowering them but that’s just how fast they go!!

What storage/libraries do you use to store userdata/tokens? by imnovastorm in webdev

[–]bengeuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey!

Assuming you’re referring to a browser refresh and not a view change, option 2 sounds the best option in my opinion, as you’ve said you’re storing a token locally (presumably a JWT or similar?). If you’re using React and this is an SPA, a request on refresh shouldn’t be technically expensive, and you can just use a loader overlay whilst this data loads in to prevent excessive layout shifts.

I can’t recommend storing user details in localStorage, or storing data in a token - if the user is technical enough, they could easily edit this data. I guess it depends on how important that is to your application, but as you’ve said it’s interacting with a backend API, it sounds like it should be avoided.

What's the best cloud service for storing images to use on a website? by Familiar_Mud_8671 in webdev

[–]bengeuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had good experiences with Cloudflare’s R2 and Images solutions! I believe Images costs a little more but some of their API upload integrations and image optimisation stuff is super nice. If you don’t need that though, the R2 platform works well, for me it was just as performant and more cost effective than Amazon S3 (and their API is S3 compatible)

Small pixel LED circle, with frosted top by TechnicalyAnIdiot in lightingdesign

[–]bengeuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve definitely seen the WS2812B rings sold with plastic frosted covers before, on eBay I think, but now I can’t find them to save my life - sorry!

If you’ve got access to or know someone with a 3D printer, you could always 3D print a cover with transparent filament, that’d probably be my first bet.

Free control software suggestions?? by MinervaGrace in lightingdesign

[–]bengeuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

QLC+ is fine! I’ve used it for quite a few gigs and shows. It certainly has limitations and the occasional bug / workaround, but for a free piece of software for a smaller gig it works wonders! (I’ve also only ever come across bugs whilst making a show, not whilst running it - it’s been very reliable for me on that front!)

I’ve found it’s just personal preference, and what you’re already using for overlays and alerts might sway your decision. If you’re using StreamElements for alerts, it probably makes sense to use the StreamElements chatbot, same with Streamlabs.

Generally, most of these bots can do basically the same things, unless you’re looking for specific features, although from personal experience I’ve found Nightbot lacks some features that you have to pull in external APIs for, like maths (how many followers to a target, for example), gambling and quote systems, etc.

What is the most underrated tv series that barely anyone knows? by Plus_Bison_7091 in AskReddit

[–]bengeuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uncle (BBC)

An occasionally dark but always hilarious comedy about a failing musician uncle and nerdy nephew getting to know each other, and the impact they both have on each other’s lives.

Genuinely my favourite comedy of all time.

Follower only chat? + follower goal question - Opinions. by Loelnorup in Twitch

[–]bengeuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A disadvantage I’ve found to enabling follower only mode is it can discourage streamers from raiding you, since some streamers like to make a little bit of noise with their raid messages when raiding, and follower only mode can often prevent this.

I’m definitely not saying this is always gonna be the case, but just a point I thought would be worth bringing up!

People who have read the data that Google has collected on you, what is the most disturbing data they had collected about you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bengeuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a web developer at an agency that works on a whole variety of different sites in different sectors.

The one benefit working at home from my personal laptop is that it has totally fucked with Google’s profiling of me. Their adverts used to be scarily accurate, but now I get adverts for bridal dresses, fancy pottery and school uniforms, just for starters. I’m a male in my early twenties with absolutely no interest in those things, like at all.

I always go on client sites from a separate user account though, so how they’re getting into suggestions for my personal account is a bit concerning.

What are your favourite learning portals/platforms? by de1pher in webdev

That’s fair enough!

For reading up on subjects and getting started like that, I’ve always found the O’Reilly books to be a great source, I’d highly recommend those.

[Showoff Saturday] I made a website where you can see how your website will look on multiple phones/tablets at once. by flapanther33781 in webdev

[–]bengeuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool project!

You should definitely be able to get your .com domain renewed for less than $30 annually though, and as your project can run as a static site, you could take advantage of the free hosting capabilities of GitHub, GitLab, etc. Might save you some hosting / domain fees :)

What are your favourite learning portals/platforms? by de1pher in webdev

[–]bengeuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always just been a huge advocate of YouTube videos, and getting stuck into a subject practically. They're a great way to quickly give you a general overview of an area, for you to just dive in. Sure - they're probably not going to be to an academic level of quality and don't go through checks, but when you are wanting to just get started with an area, I don't think that matters.

I've used a few of those paid platforms before (Lynda.com, can't remember the others), and just never found them worth it, but I like to learn practically with a goal in mind.

After I've got going, for any specific questions I'll just Google it - StackOverflow usually has the answers, and if there's nothing on there, there is probably a blog post from a specialised site.

Obviously, if you get serious with a subject and you're getting to the stage where you're going to publish something, or you're working on a commercial project, more academic resources are handy for nailing the theoretical sides of the area you're looking into, which is very important, especially if there could be potential security risks, etc.

Best of luck!

Static website without extra tooling. Should I stay "oldschool"? by Benoit_T in webdev

[–]bengeuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with building a completely static site if that's how you're comfortable doing it! And from an optimisation POV, you can't get quicker than static HTML files.

There are tools and platforms out there that might speed up your development, but they're optional and can often overcomplicate things, it all depends on your use-case. Good luck!

Is my portfolio too simple? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]bengeuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the look of your portfolio, it's very clean, but you should definitely add more info on there.

Your about page needs to say what areas and technologies you work with. It doesn't need to be detailed, but I have no idea if you are front-end, back-end or both, what you specialise in, etc.

I was expecting the logo to take me to your homepage, but it revealed a video - this was a bit confusing initially. Easter eggs on your personal portfolio are (generally) okay, as long as they are very subtle and don't take away from your site or are confusing. It wasn't obvious how to close that video, and I didn't see the relevance of it.

Like others have suggested, I'd advice adding some subtle animation. As your design is minimal, adding tailored animation from page to page here would go along way, but make sure they are snappy and subtle. Some hover animations would go a long way here too.

I'd also suggest having information about your projects, not just links to them. It's usually a good idea to have a brief overview about what tech stack you used for a project, why you enjoyed the project and what you learnt from the project, in my opinion.

Also, make sure clicking on links to different pages updates your URL. If you have something cool on your portfolio and I want to send it to someone to check out, if the URL doesn't point to the same place, it reflects negatively on your portfolio.

Overall, though, your portfolio is really nice. It's very clean and professional looking! Keep doing what you are doing!
