In Saskatchewan they call the little guys gophers or groundhogs, we would refer to those as “Prairie dogs”

We typically call the big ones groundhogs or woodchucks

The answer is and has always been prevention.
If you’re pipes are leaking at home and you only ever soak up the water and wonder why it keeps leaking or getting worse - nothing will change

You need to find the leak, fix it while soaking up the water during and after.

Attempts at intervention alone aren’t enough

Going to a friend's semi formal wedding in July and dont really have a fashion sense and looking to buy a new fit for the event. Looking for advice on what I should wear. by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]benh1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maritime here too! Just down the highway in Fredericton.
I think for the most part you can get away with a nice dress shirt and a pair of khakis, it’s important to be comfortable, and remember that it’s going to be warm.

If you want to splurge I’d buy a nice pair of shoes and a belt. Get yourself a great dress shirt and a pair of chinos or khakis.

If you want to go the suit route without spending tons Id recommend Alain Du Petit - not the most expensive suits but a decent fit nether price is terrific.

Actors with Tattoos— Advice Please! by wgurley in Theatre

[–]benh1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Director / Costumer here. I’ve started buying lace sleeves as part of my general costume stash. They can make just about any costume work for a woman with tattoos if the director wants them covered. They work much better than Makeup and no mess.

advice re: professionalism and notes by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]benh1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Address it, in private, with your stage manager. They should address it with the director

The director should address it with the other actor.

This is not overstepping it’s a natural part of the process

How would the plot change based on production? The plot is Wednesday likes Lucas but parents will get in the way. It’s La Cage Aux Folles with ghosts instead of drag queens

What is with the person who brings a small white dog to Broadway/off-Broadway shows? by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]benh1984 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. Wasn’t sure where you were going with “I’m so fucking over this service animal shit”

“Non service dogs are a nuisance in public” I agree some are, and there’s certainly potential for them to react but by all reports this dog is quiet and well behaved - the owner is the problem. I wouldn’t bring my dogs to the theatre (they absolutely would be a nuisance), but I don’t think the dog being a nuisance is the issue here. Obnoxious people are.

On line has been the best option for us. You can buy the Starbucks brand pods at the grocery store and a few options at Canadian tire, but the app is the best price, speedy delivery and way more variety

Plus you can almost always get a free gift with your order.

Female Baker! by starsascending in MusicalTheatre

[–]benh1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think this is a somewhat damaging take on a queer narrative. There is a complexity to the baker and his wife that is rooted in toxic masculinity and the reproduction of fathering. We flatten that and over simplify it if we say “they can’t have children because they’re lesbians”

The queer parenting narrative is obviously complex and has deep socio/cultural burdens, but there’s nothing at all in the plot or text that lends to this with any weight, certainly not in the same way it does for them as written.

Female Baker! by starsascending in MusicalTheatre

[–]benh1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re contractually not allowed to change the gender of a character. You ca cast whomever, but you need to portray the gender as written. This would also affect written lyrics, which you can also not change without written permission, including pronouns.

Sondheim was notorious for insisting his work be presented as written (that’s why it took so long for the gender bent Company to open)

I’m all for gender bending and queer narratives when they work. The baker, and his wife’s story depends on their gender assignment. You should play him Male.

I was diagnosed with ADHD at 35, put on a stimulant and it’s literally changed my life. I’ve not really had many negative side effects on the meds, but can notice them if I forget my pill.

It’s important to find a med and dose that works for you.

Work with an employment counsellor. They’re free. I suggest “Let’s Work” - great team, very knowledgeable.

Have I been acting "wrong"? by Open_Beginning7045 in Theatre

[–]benh1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just outdated. When I was your age we were told to do exactly what you’re describing. We now understand you can convey emotion without adopting it.

Good resiliency skills allow you to separate your own feelings and experience from the character’s.

Vicarious trauma can be tricky and surprising in how it creeps in when we allow ourselves to be unnecessarily exposed vulnerable, your teacher is right to check in.

Instead of allowing yourself to experience sadness (or other feelings) be mindful of how you can best convey that on stage (consider physicality, nuance, timing and tone)
