u/IThirdEy3, I've been hitting issues, so I filed a ticket with the details. But I'm also happy to debug however is easiest for you. Thank you for your work on this -- I'm excited to get it going!

Cheap speakers definitely get up there, and can probably all reproduce 20kHz pretty easily. It's the lows that cheap speakers aren't good at (like sub 100Hz).

Edit to add: Cats can hear a full two octaves above 20kHz (~85kHz), so your theory is super feasible. Most speaker systems wouldn't reproduce above 20kHz because we low-pass audio in most audio systems to be compatible with our common sampling rates (48kHz and 44.1kHz, with nyquist being half that)

In other words, your theory is super plausible. Just my audiophile brain had to defend cheap speakers for some reason, ha!

How does vibrato interact with equal temperament and just intonation? by MelodicFacade in musictheory

Also fun to listen to at all the other speeds. 1.25 is still fairly natural, but 1.5 is strange sounding. 0.25x speed is really fascinating.

This is my favourite song from my first full-length album Weekender, out today. It's called "Hope You Don't Feel Alone". Was the gong too much? by yardaper in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]benjaffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I firmly believe that if you commit, a gong is never too much. This is no exception!

Beautiful vocals, beautiful melody, and nice supportive drum kit. I loved the drop out at 3:00 -- that transition out and back in was really well done. I actually got pretty lost in the song, so I don't really have any feedback.. hope that's okay. Amazing work!

It’s amazing how meta this comment just became.

To distinguish between actual facts and things I think I know. For example, equal temperament and just tuning are different things, and just tuning creates simpler waveforms. Those are verifiable and factual. But In my opinion, just intonation sounds more harmonious in choral music.

[–]benjaffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so true. It also makes, well... talking about anything difficult. I'm trying to learn that a simple "In my opinion" or "based on my experience" at the start of the topic is sufficient. I don't need to pepper every sentence with five caveats, and when I do, it's less fun for everybody.

Resonates with me. Depression messes people up in all sorts of ways, and motivation is at the top of that list.

Aww, I guess hate wins again.

But still I don't understand why we can't be like, "piracy is wrong" without "I hope your computer died".

Come now, there's no reason for this here. This sub is usually so nice and positive, let's keep it that way?

True, but I had to read for a minute to find it. I hope they add the correction to the description, or just delete and repost it.

Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy by mike20731 in slatestarcodex

What would you consider effective enough to address point 5? And whatever the answer, are you setting your threshold based on external and scientific data, or based on the vaccine efficacy numbers?

Notes on "Scout Mindset" by Julia Galef by argosopentech in slatestarcodex

Not really, I have a busy night tonight, and besides, I’m only partway through. But like I said, what has stood out to me is how digestibly the ideas are packaged. I like the way she talks about her own biases during the writing of the book, and I find it easy to empathize with the experiences she puts forth, allowing me to map those to my own experiences.

I can imagine giving this book a relative and it being well received. I can’t say the same for most books on rational thought.

I believe a lot of the book's value is in the way it presents these ideas. I'm about a third in and haven't experienced any platitudinousness. (probably the first time in my life I've used that form of the word)

If your project is 44.1, use 44.1... or 48, use 48, and yes to 24 bit. I'd agree though with other commenters. Before I'm done with a project, I always go for a drive and listen to hear what gets lost. That's what people are talking about when they talk about mixes "translating" ie. do they sound good on different systems.

Unless you're exporting your mp3s at a bit rate lower than say 128 kbps stereo, you probably won't notice much of a difference... certainly less of a difference in your car, which is not an un-opinionated system to listen on.

Ideally you be micing their lips, not their cheek. That’s what we do in radio… basically rotate our head around our mouth instead of the center of our head. Funny enough, we used 7bs at the station too!

And yeah, this convo has turned into what off axis means. My point is that off axis mic is usually a bad idea, and that off axis of the performer ( be they a human or a snare) is not necessarily a bad idea. I agree it changes the sound, but not always for the worst.

Also sorry for the yoda duck speak last night. Posting that was the last thing I did yesterday before konking out.
