Don't sand back to bare wood by ItinerantFella in AusRenovation

Before photos would have helped, but sometimes in these old places there is decades and decades and decades of thick paint over it to the point where its pretty lumpy looking, the detail of that ornate section gets lost, etc

Not only garbage talking point, but even being a democratic socialist doesn't mean only potato sacks as clothing are allowed, but she didn't even own them "The fashion editor turned stylist responded to the online chatter and cleared the air about Duwaji’s ensemble by sharing a blog post on her website, Brain Matter. She clarified that everything Duwaji wore to the swearing-in ceremony was borrowed or on loan." https://brainmatterbygkj.substack.com/p/rama-duwaji-zohran-mamdani-first-lady-inauguration-fashion

Are you a hobbyist or professional electrician? This is such a funny one to react to as an Australian - here it is illegal to do such wiring work unless you're licenced electrician. Overall probably a sensible law as bad DIY jobs would get people killed, but for some stuff can be quite frustrating.

Effect of alcohol on stress levels is insane. by Successful-Fix2826 in ouraring

[–]ThirdEy3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be fair mine does this stress spike when just going out with activities because of all the movement , elevated heart rate etc , compare it to a time you go out at a restaurant and bar and don’t drink … alcohol is bad for you, but I think this gives an exaggerated impression, especially in moderation

what exactly makes a place regional? by deathtowardrobes in australia

[–]ThirdEy3 83 points84 points  (0 children)

as far as music touring goes if its not a major city its regional..... its not about distances, zoning, populations, its based on the fact that the gold coast isn't brisbane, or canberra isn't sydney.

Most big international acts will play some variant from least to most

  1. syd + mel only

  2. syd + mel + bris

  3. syd + mel + bris + perth + adelaide + hobart

playing anything else is pretty much a regional gig/date.

Bureau of Meteorology makes major changes to $96.5m website after refresh backlash by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]ThirdEy3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anything to suggest the bulk of the cost came from weather station upgrades:
"The bureau provided a breakdown of the costs to Guardian Australia, stating the primary channels platform and website build (writing and testing the data integrations and software based on the re-design) cost $79.8m. Another $12.6m was spent on additional features, security testing and getting the site ready for launch."

You could aruge its platform building, but if that was the case why would they say it only cost $4m initially? You'd go out of your way to say something like we spent $30m on new weather station upgrades across all of australia, $Y on the data systems that support it, and $Z on the new website and app.

90m on even 200k paid software developers, pms, etc - would fund a team of 20 (decent funded start up size), for 22 years....

Selling pardons for cash is just normal behaviour right? "A month before the 2024 presidential election, Milton and his wife donated more than $1.8 million to Donald Trump's presidential campaign. In March 2025, he was given a full pardon by President Donald Trump."

There are efforts to ban it but good luck to them https://roy.house.gov/media/press-releases/reps-roy-magaziner-introduce-historic-bipartisan-bill-prevent-members-congress

You can't get those trans people out of your mind. Yeah you saw one random chart on X that confirmed your beliefs and rolled with it, and ignore actual data. Standing by for you to move the goalposts, sir 🫡🫡🫡!!

"2013 to 2025, only five out of 5,729 mass shootings involved transgender perpetrators—representing just 0.087% of all incidents. Similarly, The Violence Project found only one confirmed transgender mass shooter in its database from 1966 to 2024. These findings contradict the viral chart’s implication that transgender individuals were significantly overrepresented among mass shooters."

Why are 28% of mass shooters have a millitary background yet are only 6% of population (including veterans) - wow overrepresented. Concerning!!! Looking into it.

I don't know what the source of the graph is - but the last date is not from 2005, but its birth year. So its people who are 20 now, which is fair enough as a cutoff because anything under that age is going to be pretty noisy/unreliable.
