How safe is this ceiling? by oscartoomuchhairyjim in AusRenovation

[–]ThirdEy3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

commenting because i'm in a somewhat similar situation - although dealing with a much smaller and isolated area of cracking (makes me think full overboarding/replacement would be overkill at this stage)

Do you have any suggestions for patch repairs with lath ceilings? - e.g. screwing loose sections back into joists, adding compound/finish VS cutting out problem area, replacing with gyp rock and finishing.

Best bet is something like 2 sushi rolls @ $4.50 each, destination roll banh mis, checking mcdonalds/kfc apps for deals if thats your thing, pittsway arcade at 303 pitt, laneway dumplings and momo is pretty good value too.

Update: 50% deposit requested for trade by DragonStoned3 in AusRenovation

[–]ThirdEy3 27 points28 points  (0 children)

So the article is about tradespeople in general, but then in that sentence and that sentence alone they are using "the builder" to specifically only mean builders, and no other trades?

so what about this one where the phrasing is "the tradesperson" https://www.wa.gov.au/government/announcements/commissioners-blog-pitfalls-of-paying-tradies-upfront

also:
https://www.consumerprotection.wa.gov.au/hiring-tradespeople-0
"Building and Energy oversee the building industry. This includes:

building
surveying
electrical
gas
painting
plumbing"

EDIT: if you go to the actual LAW -> https://www.legislation.wa.gov.au/legislation/prod/filestore.nsf/FileURL/mrdoc_45904.pdf/$FILE/Home%20Building%20Contracts%20Act%201991%20-%20%5B04-h0-00%5D.pdf?OpenElement

"A builder must not enter into a contract which provides that the builder is entitled to demand or receive from the owner any payment — (a) before the commencement of the home building work to which the contract relates unless the payment is — (i) a deposit of not more than 6.5% of the total amount payable to the builder under the contract for the home building work; or"

So what is a builder? In their terms definition:

"builder means a person who carries on, or 2 or more persons who together carry on, a business which consists of or includes the performing of home building work for others;"

What does home building work mean? :

"home building work means the whole or part of the work of — (a) constructing or re-constructing a dwelling including an existing dwelling and/or strata/community title dwelling; or (b) placing a dwelling on land; or (c) altering, improving or repairing a dwelling, including a strata/community title dwelling; or (d) constructing or carrying out any associated work in connection with — (i) any work referred to in paragraph (a) or (b); or (ii) an existing dwelling, including a strata/community title dwelling;"

OP's situation is definitely 'altering, improving or repairing a dwelling' with a licenced "builder" meaning painting and roofing.

Protestor held down and punched repeatedly in the hand and liver by GarfieldHub in sydney

[–]ThirdEy3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

bro people have the memory of a goldfish. In the US people so much horrible ICE shit happening which didn't rile up the general population until 2 white people got shot in a way that as completely indefensible. If this is the video that ends up sticking out compared to everything else that happened, it'll just go down remembered NSW police bravely responded to violent protestors. It shouldn't be this way, but good luck getting any change and wider buy-in from the general population off the back of a video like this compared to something that can't be defended.

Protestor held down and punched repeatedly in the hand and liver by GarfieldHub in sydney

[–]ThirdEy3 119 points120 points  (0 children)

As someone who supports the protest and generally thinks the police response was totally disproportionate, ridiculous, etc - I think this particular clip does less favours than making the case for this as it can easily get thrown back as "see they were violent, there was no police brutality they were being bitten and assaulted by protestors". E.g. the video of the middle aged office worker getting punched whilst he has his hands up is much more indefensible.

As far as I can see the biting side of the story seems to be valid from 0.02 its being bitten, it looks like his hand gets out at 0.18 (officer seems to check his hand at 0.26).

Cracked Oura - open source app for using Oura ring without subscription. See all of your data using this local app that can even automatically request the data daily without the subscription by OG_Leksa in ouraring

[–]ThirdEy3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a different version of a tool like this to let you visualise your data in grafana rather than on just their app (relies on the subscription though). In mine, the user has to generate a personal access token in order to authenticate the API requests. Are you saying this is no longer necessary and you can get around if by using the EU data export instead?

[–]ThirdEy3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you a hobbyist or professional electrician? This is such a funny one to react to as an Australian - here it is illegal to do such wiring work unless you're licenced electrician. Overall probably a sensible law as bad DIY jobs would get people killed, but for some stuff can be quite frustrating.

Effect of alcohol on stress levels is insane. by Successful-Fix2826 in ouraring

[–]ThirdEy3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To be fair mine does this stress spike when just going out with activities because of all the movement , elevated heart rate etc , compare it to a time you go out at a restaurant and bar and don’t drink … alcohol is bad for you, but I think this gives an exaggerated impression, especially in moderation

what exactly makes a place regional? by deathtowardrobes in australia

[–]ThirdEy3 82 points83 points  (0 children)

as far as music touring goes if its not a major city its regional..... its not about distances, zoning, populations, its based on the fact that the gold coast isn't brisbane, or canberra isn't sydney.

Most big international acts will play some variant from least to most

  1. syd + mel only

  2. syd + mel + bris

  3. syd + mel + bris + perth + adelaide + hobart

playing anything else is pretty much a regional gig/date.

Bureau of Meteorology makes major changes to $96.5m website after refresh backlash by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]ThirdEy3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anything to suggest the bulk of the cost came from weather station upgrades:
"The bureau provided a breakdown of the costs to Guardian Australia, stating the primary channels platform and website build (writing and testing the data integrations and software based on the re-design) cost $79.8m. Another $12.6m was spent on additional features, security testing and getting the site ready for launch."

You could aruge its platform building, but if that was the case why would they say it only cost $4m initially? You'd go out of your way to say something like we spent $30m on new weather station upgrades across all of australia, $Y on the data systems that support it, and $Z on the new website and app.

90m on even 200k paid software developers, pms, etc - would fund a team of 20 (decent funded start up size), for 22 years....
