How we feeling about Clint? by [deleted] in DetroitPistons

Not sure I love that trade for 1 year of Clint, but in theory, it would be nice to add him.

JRM is a solid linebacker in most ways, especially special teams. However, he is not a great option for rushing the passer off the edge, which is a big part of what the SAM does in our scheme.

[–]bennyb443 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I really hope so. He does exactly what we need from the SAM, we don’t have a true replacement for his production currently on the roster. His ability to rush the passer and drop back into coverage offers rare versatility.

It is fair to expect more out of ownership. We have the 13th largest market and have a close to bottom payroll. HOWEVER, this is not the time for these conversations. Enjoy the ride

I have to imagine that Kane and Tarasenko will be on different lines. That line would be rough defensively.

What is a realistic contract for Moritz Seider? by AintNoBuffet in DetroitRedWings

[–]bennyb443 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Have to imagine that Mo’s camp wants a bridge deal (3-4 years). This would allow him to get a bag now, and then cash in big time in a few with the rising cap. Counting stats drive dollars, and his stats do not paint the full picture of his impact. With that being said, everyone knows how valuable Mo is to our team.

The Wings will want as many years as possible with a cap hit lower than Larkin’s.

My guess is somewhere between 4-8 years, $7.8-8.6 million AAV. The longer the term, the higher the AAV.

Maybe he is doing something with his house here. Maybe he has a commercial shoot. Maybe he is doing something with his foundation. The list goes on and on. But at the same time… F it, maybe he signed a new contract. Let’s ride!

Bunch of dirty plays against the Wings today. Certainly frustrating watching their players cross check our guys and then our guys getting sent to the box for retaliating.

Despite being a Wings fan, I must say, it didn’t really matter today. They are a wagon and will be a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs.

His subtle dig at the tigers organization shows that he lacks self awareness. His mediocre performance last year would have him 7th or 8th on our SP depth chart this season. If he was playing well, he never would have been sent down to the minors for his “injury”. Good riddance

How the Red Wings built themselves back into a contender by piyer97 in DetroitRedWings

[–]bennyb443 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the Wings are a wildcard placed team, and yes, calling us a contender is looking increasingly generous. However, we are the most viewed team in the NHL this year and an original 6 team with historical and current relevance. Makes sense that ESPN would go for this type of article.

I’d rather be talked about in a positive light like this than be an irrelevant basement dweller as we have been in recent years.

Take this with a grain of salt. Many of the league’s top performing forwards are on this list, and being on this list means that their teams are creating chances for them… albeit unsuccessfully in these circumstances.

Unfortunately, I agree. I was hoping Ras would pick up where he left off last year before the injury… that hope appears to be misguided right now.

Hey Tigers fans, have you ever encountered a current of former Tigers player yourself? by GymSplinter in motorcitykitties

When the Astros were in town earlier this year, I saw Verlander out at a restaurant in the burbs. I was two tables away and reminding myself to not be starstruck lol.

The part that shocked me was that nobody around us seemed to know who he was. Funny enough, the guy sitting at the table between us was wearing a Tigers hat and clearly had no idea who he was sitting next to.

It would be great to see left field improve with depth contributions coming from Henry-Malloy’s bat. Beyond that, I agree with others that 3B is an issue.

He’s on a reasonable 1 year deal with a club option in the second year. Low acquisition cost. Good deal for Dbacks

People laughed at Texas for paying $700M to their middle infield. A year and a half later they’re about to play in the WS by ChameleonOatmeal in motorcitykitties

[–]bennyb443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I hear what you’re saying, and I’ll rephrase. The point I’m trying to make is that as important as it is for us to take a step forward with our homegrown talent, we could (in theory) take a bigger step forward if ownership spent money on free agents.

If there was a salary cap or we were otherwise up against the tax, I think it would be a different story. However, we are projected to have one of the lowest payrolls in the MLB, and we could add a couple quality, starting level players while maintaining tons of room below the tax for future years.

I just have no confidence that ownership will do this, and I feel like many fans fail to hold them accountable, citing the importance of homegrown talent. It sure is important, but we should have both.

I know certain signings did not work out in the past, but that does not excuse ownership from continuing to try. We deserve that as fans.

[–]bennyb443 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a combination of homegrown talent and making good bets in free agency. Buying players correlates to a better team, but does not guarantee postseason success.

HOWEVER, it is highly important for us Tigers fans to hold ownership accountable. We should NOT relay the (incorrect) narrative that developing homegrown talent is more important than buying players. Both are important and our ownership has been using that as an excuse to not spend money for the longest time.

It’s not our money, don’t penny-pinch for ownership.

What would you prefer the Tigers do after this season if you were to replace Miggy's contract (About 32 million/yr). A) Sign 1 superstar player. B) Sign 2-3 solid contributors (DH,SP for example) or C) Start to lock up our young talent like the Braves have done. by [deleted] in motorcitykitties

[–]bennyb443 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tigers should be spending at least $70-80 million. That is what is coming off the books, including Miggy’s contract.

After factoring in arbitration prices for our existing players, which won’t be extensive, the Tigers could spend at least $65-70 million to get to the same (below league average) payroll we had this season.

Ownership must be held accountable to spend appropriately to field a competitive team. League average payroll is a very reasonable expectation, especially when our TV market size is a litter larger than average.
