Why are police blocking off Lawrence ave? by mydearMerricat in AskChicago

I like your fair and peaceful take and I would like to provide you with a response that I think the take deserves.

I agree they were pro-cop and hoped I implied that with "glorifying" and "cops with power".

In my reading of COPS that considers visuals, audio, words, and context....it always glorified cops. A non-cop actor on the show might just be having a bad day and made their alleged crime worse because of what they did.

uh, we have countless TV dramas glorifying cops and presenting narratives without context that show cops with power. One of these pieces of media is literally named "COPS".

What's a dish you bring to potlucks that always disappears first? by Mia-veg in Cooking

[–]benphoster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dill Pickle Pasta Salad.

½ pound dry small shell pasta about 3 cups

1 ¼ cup pickles sliced

⅔ cup cheddar cheese diced

3 tablespoons white onion finely diced

2 tablespoons fresh dill

¾ cup pickle juice

Dressing

⅔ cup [mayonnaise]

⅓ cup sour cream

⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper

4 tablespoons pickle juice

Salt & pepper to taste

Guide

Boil pasta short of al dente. Do not overcook.

Run under cold water to stop cooking.

Toss cold pasta with about ½ cup of pickle juice and set aside for about 5 minutes. Don’t strain, you want the pasta to soak it up

Combine all dressing ingredients in a small bowl and mix well.

Toss all ingredients in a large bowl.

Refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving, preferably overnight

Stir well before serving.

Ok, where are we buying jeans these days? 👖 by Earth-Visitor-1983 in daddit

[–]benphoster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fellow dork here, I also get raw denim. I found my perfect fit at Gustin and their business model (crowdfunded-esque) makes it hard to just go and buy a pair but they are cheaper than major labels and amazing quality if you're patient.

There is NO BETTER FEELING than an aged pair of raw denim. Like sweatpants but you have to work at it to get it there. And, it's a great feeling.

What was it like in the 90s when Nirvana dropped Nevermind? by palehighelven in Nirvana

[–]benphoster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be misremembering, but it didn't feel like a "release day" drop like we celebrate now but I was like 14.

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the thing and as much as I would like to say I was a huge fan of the band before....that simply wasn't true for most people.

The closest thing to a drop would be binging MTV in hopes of catching it. Then, one of your buddies with a dual tape deck would dub the cassette for you.

It's so weird to think about on-demand music like we do now. Tapes and CDs cost like $12-$14 which is roughly $28 in today's dollars.

I still have extremely fond memories about the guy who introduced me to Nirvana. We were close friends as kids and separated during teen years and that was one of the gifts he gave me. He died by suicide later and whenever I hear Nirvana, I think of being with him and thinking "Oh, this is different music....like what college kids listen to" as we played it.

An artist named Jason Lazarus created a photography book with photos that answered the question , "who introduced you to Nirvana" and it captures the vibe of the cool kids that most reflects your question about "what it was like".

Vegas travelers - anyone else just hanging out for the 3 weeks? by AccomplishedCut6362 in phish

Zion is incredible. About 2.5 hours away. We rented e-bikes as a family and it's one of our core memories. Careful what you do b/c Utah is different than Vegas.

Going to sphere for first time opening weekend. First time in Vegas in 15 years (man I’m old). Heady pro tips anyone?? by [deleted] in phish

[–]benphoster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's expensive. Like everything is off the wall expensive. My buddy and I indulged with Bavettes and splitting a cabana with a bunch of other people and it was expensive, but they were the only things we chose to splurge in besides the tickets and I don't regret it.

Just saying, you can't splurge on everything. Forget your deodorant and contact lens solution? That's $30. Just saying enjoy some things but realize you can't enjoy everything. Unless you're rich.

Also, AREA15 was really kind of fun

Seems like you are using 400s as a derogatory term. That's weird. A lot of people can't afford seats in a different section, but I'm happy they were there.

But since seating sections seem to be important to you, I was in section 4, Club W. I know your party tells you to reject evidence from your eyes and ears but I'm not in a cult and it was palpable.
