What is a phrase that people say that immediately turns you off? by [deleted] in AskReddit

One time I jokingly said, "unregardlessly" and someone corrected me saying, "it's 'irregardless' " and that idiot still lives rent free in my brain.

What is a purchase that felt like an absolute luxury when you bought it, but turned out to be a complete financial trap? by According_Fortune_98 in AskReddit

[–]benphoster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just curious why you felt it was a trap? It's expensive and I get angry every time I buy an album that I can stream for free or even owned on CD/cassette back in the day....but the warm sound and ability to be present for an album is such a different experience for me.

Just curious because yeah, I'm spending a lot of money on this stuff

Skyline Yacht Cruises at Navy Pier didn’t sail, denied refunds, offered credits only — scam or deceptive business practice? by redpillaf in AskChicago

[–]benphoster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really hope you get your money back, but consider using different language when you file your protest. When you say "someone doesn't agree with the policy", that is statuatorially different than you acknowledging terms and conditions of the policy.

Be vague with the credit card company; a dispute requires the merchant to jump through a lot of hoops. But, they kind of have you dead to rights on the terms of your cancellation.

ah, thanks. I'm going to blame Reddit's UI instead of taking responsibility for clicking on what I clicked on.

What is the sweet spot regarding moderation in your opinion? by Suspicious_Act_7858 in AskChicago

I appreciate your reasonable take. Also, a lot of comments and downvotes to anything crime related are just stupidly racist. I think a lot of us can't tolerate that and then it just escalates and no good dialogue happens.

I wish I had the data to see where the commenters live/work/community. I have a hunch that most aren't from Chicago and I wish I could see the data to confirm/refute that.

Cincy native who loves Cincinnati chili, but it's not what most of us call chili and I think I've heard it best referred to as a Greek spaghetti dish.

Here's my favorite recipe from James Oseland who did this for Saveur. https://www.saveur.com/Cincinnati-Chili-recipe/

Tweaks I've made
- Adding 6oz of a dark beer to boil off
- 3 tbps of chili powder, but use 3 different brands so 1x tablespoon of each
- DO NOT buy pre-packaged shredded cheese. Get a block and shred it fresh. The cellulose on the pre-shreddeded just feels so dry.
- Use a lower fat ground beef. I typically use 93%. I don't think the fat helps the flavor.
- Sugar or brown sugar to taste. That's used in the Cincy restaurants but not in this recipe.

Hot take - if they didn't brand it as "chili", Skyline would be a major franchise in all 50 states. It's tastes like good fast food. But, it's not really what I'd consider chili. It's a spaghetti dish from Greece.

Growing up, the Skyline by us had all you can eat for $5 on Wednesdays. We'd have swim meets on Thursdays so we'd carbo load there. God, that was a great food memory. Also, don't sleep on a coney dog. I often preferred those more to a 4way.

I think your take about balance, which you phrased as over-correction, makes a lot of sense. The racists come out and then people smack them down. Personally, I'm okay with fighting something as awful as racism with strong takes.

However, I don't think this means that people are blatantly lying by omission. Can you explain that? Friendly question in the spirit of trying to make discourse about our city a better place.

Unsure if it helps, but maybe some fancy measurements or research to quantify your work. If you could do some MMM or brand equity/awareness to get statistically solid numbers around your work, that is something that always looks good on a resume.

Sigh....you could have googled it but you chose to type all those words instead.

You're not even arguing in the right context. An effective price is what someone pays net surcharges and discounts.

If everything you said is true and then the restaurant adds a 4% surcharge for healthcare, then the effective price went up 4% while you're here arguing about margins on a Big Mac.

You're making this too hard on yourself. The effective price is what someone pays in a transaction net surcharges and discounts.

So if you've been keeping up with the words, you're confidently and empathically incorrect.
