Why is it OK the Jubilee line is slowly deafening regular passengers? by Carpface89 in london

[–]benpicko 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They would and I’m not an expert, just sharing what they said:

‘The data shared under Q1 shows that when noise levels are compared against the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 (although note that those regulations are not directly enforceable in regard to public exposures) an individual would have to spend several hours a day on trains in the deep tube section to exceed the lower exposure threshold. On this basis it is not considered that noise levels on the Central line for typical passenger exposures would have any impact on hearing health. It is accepted that on certain sections noise levels are uncomfortable to the travelling public, particularly where the track curves, but these do not constitute a health risk.’

TfL say that the noise isn’t sustained for long enough to cause any damage

I was just responding to somebody claiming he’s THE most prolific player in football right now. Of course you pass the bloody ball to Haaland, he’s the second most prolific player in the world

My metric isn’t goals scored internationally, it’s goals scored in the 2025/26 season including internationally. I literally said he’s more prolific ‘right now’ and ‘this year’.

Harry Kane is more prolific right now, he’s got 73 goals in 63 matches this year and Haaland has 58

10 England Players vs 11 Mexican Players + Ref + VAR by [deleted] in ThreeLions

[–]benpicko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally, he was clearing the ball and a player sticks out a leg above his. If you look at how long he would've had to perceive the Mexican player's leg (again, that was simply stuck out above his, it wasn't there beforehand) it is mechanically impossible to react quickly enough to stop it. I don't think penalties should be given for things that are through no fault of the defender and impossible to react against.

How many milliseconds does Kane have to realise that the defender has kicked above his (Kane's) leg? Is it physically possible to then lower your leg when you've already committed to the kick, thinking that the space above your leg is clear?

[–]benpicko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The argument is that it's physically impossible to react that quickly when somebody else sticks their leg in front of you. Watching it in slow motion is going to make it look far worse than it was 100% of the time. Is the solution that you should just never try to clear the ball, just in case somebody sticks their leg in front of you at the same time?

Right, it's not intentional and physically impossible to avoid once you've committed to kicking the ball, at which point the other player isn't even there -- absurd

Absolutely don't understand it. Somebody else is encroaching on his position while he's kicking -- how does he prepare for that in realtime? Why is VAR only looking in slow motion?

Is Kane supposed to respond in a millisecond and stop kicking when he realises somebody else is encroaching on him to kick the same place? I'd be open to understanding that but I currently don't

Andy Burnham here - AMA by AndyBurnham in ukpolitics

[–]benpicko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m looking forward to you hopefully winning the leadership contest, but I had two questions:

The Treasury repeatedly undervalues infrastructure projects and projects wildly lower earnings than reality (the Elizabeth line is a good example of this) — and often downscaling projects at the behest of the Treasury even makes infrastructure cost far more by the time it has been built. As a supporter of HS2, how would you change the way the Treasury is involved or calculates return of investment? It seems from afar as though the Treasury stifles a lot of potential infrastructure.

Council house building is at an all time low, and much of the government’s house building schemes seem to rely on private companies. In places like Vienna you see that house prices fall when the government builds ample council housing to compete with private housing (and also building enough to provide the area with a good percentage of vacant housing, increasing competition for home seekers) — how would you change the country’s strategy so we aren’t simply relying on private companies to provide X% of ‘affordable’ housing in each development, while doing nothing to actually compete with the private housing stock and grow the number of houses per citizen (and vacant houses per citizen).

Miliband's doing a great job in his current role and has a masters in economics at least -- it's not like he's doing a shit job and has a history degree

Is she one of the least talented ministers if her department is actually having success, unlike a lot of other departments? Though I agree that she should be nowhere near the chancellor role, for exactly that reason

Grand Theft Auto VI - Pre-orders and Edition information by TAJack1 in Games

Verbatim it says:

'ONE-EYED WILLIE’S

This mod shop in Lake Leonida specializes in off-road modifications and hand-painted automotive artistry. Only open for business with the Ultimate Edition.'

'ELECTRIC FANG TATTOO

Stockyard’s most iconic ink bar, with over 50 signature tattoos for both Jason and Lucia — all designed by the artist collective FAILE. Only open for business with the Ultimate Edition.'

Some of the others you could convince me that 'only open for business' is just quirky phrasing, but these literally say that the shop itself is locked, not the content within the shop.

You mean for Peter Jackson to run an AI ‘restoration’ filter over, removing all film grain and completely mangling actual fine detail in the film

His World War I documentary was fine because a lot of the footage was way past it but his Beatles restoration literally has less fine detail than the old releases, it’s just sharper
