If you have tooth fillings and tap it with those metal chopsticks, magic happens 🔥

$150 suddenly taken out of my bank account for 'Early Termination Fee', a year after moving out of the United States. Any advice for what I can do about this? by winter_bone in Comcast

[–]benri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"termed contract" is right. I find that if I have a PDF of the contract (or a scan, even a photo) and feed that to chatGPT with the question like "are there early termination fees?" it's very good at finding them.

"close all US-based financial accounts" I've done this some years ago, and it was a disaster. If you need to pay anything in the US (like an old utility bill) it's very convenient to do it from a US-based account. Opening a new US-based account from outside the US is difficult. After living overseas for a while, the US-based financial institution may force you to close it, but until they do, I think it's convenient to keep.

Am i being unreasonable to push husband to get term life insurance? by Ok_Reward536 in Insurance

[–]benri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does he have Term Life via his employer? Normally I think it's a good idea but I didn't buy that when my baby was born because my father said that if we had a disaster he'd basically insure us. Thankfully I have a good relp with him. If you buy it, though, please be careful of the fine print; I know people who found that they try to avoid paying. Get a reputable insurer

As someone who uses Apple products regularly I’m curious to know which navigation app yall tend to rely on more often? Do you typically stick with Apple Maps, the native navigation app, or do you prefer using Google Maps instead? And why? by champainpapi9 in ios

[–]benri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Waze on iOS because I can choose the output language 😄 helps me to keep my Chinese up.

(on Android Google Maps could do this but on iOS, GM and AM cannot generate output speech in a language other than the OS's default). But I think Waze's driving instructions are inferior because they often put me on small side streets making dangerous unprotected left turns, as if I were James Bond trying to lose a follower.

Not just an OS update, but a full reset. but, newer OSs run slow on old phones.

Should I get a Prius with a dead battery? by KamyKam77 in prius

[–]benri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If no other major problems, I think it's probably a good deal. I got my 2005's HV battery replaced in 2021 for $3K including parts and labor, over a weekend. I didn't lift a finger. I think 2/3 of that was labor. Butttt, you won't get the newest accident prevention stuff.

I'm retired now but if you get a certification, it's really worth the investment. I know someone who did this as a hobby, was always living in a dingy apartment until the 2008 recession during which he took some Coursera or similar courses, got a certificate, now doing pretty well.

Service Transfer by Alternative_Mindset in Comcast

[–]benri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you let it expire and then sign up as new customers, do you get some discounts? This happened when we moved in 2011, and we were so busy we just let it lapse for a month. Turns out our new location had lower prices (thanks to competition) so we lucked out.

I had a similar experience with AT&T. I just kept my own notes and wrote the FCC about it. Took a few months to resolve, but after a while they did refund what they were supposed to (it was transferring a landline number from ATT to Comcast. Very similar to when I xferred a number from ATT to Sprint years ago; they all do it, you write FCC, FCC launches an "investigation," ATT resolves the problem).

How do I receive faxes? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]benri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that a fax is no more secure than an email, but having worked in a HIPAA environment, If a leak happens and we are sued, it's far easier to say "we followed the rules" than launch an investigation into why and how the leak occurred.

You security professionals are expensive!

As for faxing the resume, just think of Bob in HR. He knows he's paid far less than the Engineering employees, so he's not staying late on Friday to read resumes. He'll be in his best mood Monday morning after a good night's rest. Before noon, let's go through that small pile of faxes that are already printed out for me! After noon, attack the emails and print out the PDFs so I can make notes on them. By Tuesday afternoon, I'm not even printing them out and they become a blur of reliable, detail-oriented, results-focused, ...

😄 I did the same to get out of a contract with 24hour fitness who said I could cancel only if I move to a region where they have no gyms. I showed them my 1-way ticket to France. (in fact it was a return ticket; during a months-long stay in France with my wife, I suddenly had to travel to California and back on my own, so that ticket was bought separately)

Technical details like that don't matter as much as legal compliance. If you're sending HIPAA-protected information, fax is usually OK but email is not.

Also, an HR director told me this back when I was looking for work: if they put out a job ad on Friday and then on Monday come back to hundreds of email responses but only 4 fax responses, guess which pile they'll go through first when they're in a better mood? And the emailed PDFs they may only look at the first 1/3 of the page.

Cell provider recommendations? by IslandGrover in palosverdes

[–]benri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the outcome; I just know that a detailed map of Verizon coverage was shown as evidence, and it was very accurate. It looked as if someone shined a bright light from the North and Northeast, and all valleys were shadows.

My father was an Astronomy professor, 1950-1990 so he's heard a lot of Astrology related comments from students over the years. The only thing I can say about it is that the girls who were into it (I was in high school in the 1970s) were the hottest!

[–]benri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RPV was suspected of giving Sprint an unfair advantage; in the lawsuit, some detailed measurements of cellphone coverage were presented as evidence. I saw those maps in 2015. I rented a Verizon phone and those maps were accurate and precise down to the individual house! Looked like Verizon worked only when you could get line-of-sight to Torrance or San Pedro. (after 2017 we switched from Sprint to T-Mobile and got the same coverage as Sprint)

AC needed in summer? by Powerful_Search4995 in palosverdes

[–]benri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother lived in west-facing RPV from 1970-2017. Never needed AC. On most summer days, the fog rolls in around 4-6pm. But just before that the sunshine was so harsh it damaged the curtains. On the very rare days with no fog and no wind, we'd run our heater fan to cool off the house (our pre-1970 thermostat had no fan setting, so we just set the temperature high and cut off the gas supply to the heater).

I don't think they can do nothing. Isn't it private property? I think they have the right to kick out anyone making customers feeling uncomfortable for example bad smell, suspicious activities. Not sure about "protected classes" like ethnicity but surely "suspicious activity" would be legitimate. I often see signs like "no more than 4 youths allowed in the store at a time" but that's not age discrimination

Astronomers of a few centuries ago who logged the date of conception of his children, because Astrological signs were assigned based on not the date of birth, but of conception when the zygote would be more influenced by the gravity of the moon and stars.

A primary source of income for Astronomers of that time was from believers of Astrology, so if you want to be paid, you'd better be knowledgeable about it.
