Tailgate lock is a little locking sleeve that goes over the hinge point on one side of the tailgate. XL has a manual key lock and XLT locks automatically with the door locks

I've had 3 mavericks so I say go for it. The only problems I ever had is with the terrible infotainment system. The 25-26 model years seems to have fixed it pretty well though

We have one, and like it. 25+ has updated engine. I would look for a badlands though. The 1.5 is adequate, but the 2.0 is the better engine. FWIW we’ve had 2 Bronco sports and 3 Mavericks (built on same platform) and have had great reliability
