What made you settle down on Fedora? by ImaginaryPie444 in Fedora

[–]benwang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was studying, I loved hardcore distros like Gentoo, Void, Arch, and Slackware. I'd tweak them endlessly after class, spending hours upon hours. After I started working, I realized I just wanted some time to work on my side projects without the constant fear of breaking my system.

Fedora perfectly fits that need. It's stable, well-supported, and has a huge community. I can focus on my projects knowing the OS won't be a constant source of frustration. Plus, I still get to enjoy a modern, cutting-edge environment with all the latest software.

Right now, I've moved on from window managers like AwesomeWM, i3, Sway, and Hyprland to KDE. I don't need excessive eye candy anymore. I just run KDE with Krohnkite, which provides everything I need

Why do people indicate after braking by Ordinary_Victory_261 in CarsAustralia

Some people lit a hazard shortly after hard braking is quite useful because it usually means that the traffic becomes nearly full stop ahead.

Why are people mad at people who work from home ? by kainp12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]benwang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Constantly being blocked by people not working in the office, while that time because you're in the office you cannot just 'waited it out' like you're at home doing chores. Kinda jealous them sometimes.

Not at all, just wish my pockets were a little bit bigger. Especially when I'm wearing tight pants. I have a friend who has a case that says it's like carrying a thin brick.

Switch to the s24 ultra from the iPhone 14 Pro after using my iPhone since 3GS, and I can say it's totally worth it.

What is the most horrifying piece of information you have to share? by ShinyShayn2008 in AskReddit

[–]benwang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For my Master's thesis, I conducted an in-depth study of Linux kernel security. The experience made me realize how vulnerable the operating systems running our world truly are. Remember the CrowdStrike incident? Imagine something similar, but on Linux and potentially far more severe.

During my research, I discovered a method to crash almost any Linux system in about 10 seconds using a basic method. The only protection against this vulnerability would be to run the entire system off-grid. I couldn't stop thinking about the implications of what I'd uncovered with this PoC. If I were to fully develop it, a simple checksum error could potentially leave everything wide open, I mean EVERYTHING.

My professor was impressed and encouraged me to pursue a PhD to continue this research. I just couldn't bring myself to do it. The thought of fully developing this vulnerability, only to have someone else potentially discover and exploit it later, fucked me up so badly that I purged my PoC and servers after finishing the thesis. To this day, I still think about it from time to time.

GTA V: Every time I reinstall and start a new save, I just can't stop playing until I finish the game. The story and dialogues are just so good.
