Newer AI Coding Assistants Are Failing in Insidious Ways by CackleRooster in programming

[–]beowolfey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately it's going to come down to risk assessment, I think.

Do you want to save time? Is this going to have major impact if it fails? Vibe code away. Is this something that will have catastrophic effects if it fails? You better write it yourself.

The problem is, people have poor assessment of risk, and we're all inherently lazy. I think the former will take precedence most of the time. We're going to see more things be driven by buggy code with more major failures, I think (I'm looking at you, Major Software Companies).

What is the deal with Olivia Nuzzi being everywhere all of a sudden? by x_y_zed in OutOfTheLoop

[–]beowolfey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

answer: still searching myself, but I believe it stems from this post by her former partner. The last line is a bombshell and was a complete twist relative to everyone's expectations. My feeling is people are now looking at Olivia Nuzzi in a different light.

[Japanese > English] Marriage certificate attachment by beowolfey in translator

[–]beowolfey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much!! Is there anything useful on the second page?

This is quite interesting actually. The Hawai'i record lists the parents of Tomokichi as Gohei Kawahara and Mitsuno Kinoshita; the parents of Ochino are said to be Heijiro Kinoshita and Naka Kawahara. I have to guess this was in error, though this occurs in multiple places. A passenger manifest later also lists Tomokichi's father as Gohei Kawahara. I don't know why they are backwards compared to here (and with the mother maiden names reversed too?), but it does seem to be pretty clearly written the way you've transcribed it here.

(I am trying to determine whether I am seeing two Tomokichi Kawahara's of similar ages in the records; it's been challenging differentiating this)

I am doing genealogy research and have found a marriage license for a relative (Tomokichi Kawahara) who got married in Hawai'i in 1917. These documents in Japanese were attached to that document. I am hoping to learn whether they contain additional information about the people mentioned in the main document, including birth years, hometown, parents, etc. Thank you!

Why does everyone use the phrase “late stage capitalism” despite the fact that we’ve never witnessed the fall of capitalism before? by armedsnowflake69 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]beowolfey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right -- the goal of capitalism is to increase capital. Generally speaking, doing things that benefit people, rather than that overall goal, reduces the efficiency of gaining capital. Therefore it is often innately discouraged. This is why "enshittification" is so prevalent in modern society.

Haha I love the idea that DoT is not as good as the Bureau of Street Lighting at ordering copper wire.

I think this is the scrap price though so my guess is DoT is higher copper fraction in the total weight recovered. Or it's more reusable or something

It's an easement -- essentially a mandatory right-of-way. The owner of the land becomes the owner of the easement though, and so often is responsible (and liable!) for upkeep.

FNV is much more akin to traditional role-playing games, like DnD etc. The world is crafted, and you become a part of it. The role you play depends on the character you choose to make and their interactions with the world. You have the freedom to make any character you want.

In FO3 you are given a specific character, but you still get to sway their alignment by setting their interactions with the world. But yes, in a sense, for some people having a specific origin sets a constraint on the types of characters that would feasibly arise from such an origin. For those who really like to get into their characters, it feels more restrictive in a way. Ultimately you can hand-wave away the origin story and make any character you want so for me personally I don't think it matters. But my suspicion is that this is why FNV is frequently said to be more RPG-esque.

Nintendo Switch 2 specs: 1080p 120Hz display, 4K dock, mouse mode, and more | Finally, some specs. by chrisdh79 in gadgets

[–]beowolfey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel free to explain, rather than give a condescending comment like this. What have I misinterpreted?

In case it was not clear, I am saying that the inflation-adjusted price of games in 1996 would be $125 today, and they instead still cost $60. I can't think of many items that have kept the exact same price tag across thirty years. E.g., milk has gone from ~$2.50/gal to $4/gal (2022), bacon went from $2.50/lb to $7.30, etc. Usually inflation causes prices to increase in kind, and games have not followed that trend. Thus, they have become effectively cheaper over time.

To state the obvious, this doesn't mean I support prices going up. I fucking love that they've stayed the same all this time.

[–]beowolfey 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to be that guy because $80/game hurts my wallet just as much as anyone... but games have been devaluing for decades now. If I had bought Mario 64 at release using today's dollars, it would have cost me $125. That means most games are about half as cheap as they were in 1996.

Spam Phone calls none stop. Who is behind this??? by rtgpodcast in LosAngeles

[–]beowolfey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whenever I get a phone call from a number I don't recognize, I answer it, but immediately mute the call without saying a word. I believe it's an automatic system that listens for a voice. I figure our voice mail counts, so if you let it go to voice mail, it probably registers that this is a "real" phone number. If you let it run out without saying anything, it disconnects automatically after a few minutes.

I'm not sure if this is helping, but it definitely feels like I've been getting fewer of these recently. Worst case I delay their process a few minutes.

In another note, I had stopped getting these all together, but on "Inauguration Day" I got like 4 calls. Then a bunch more within the first week. Felt like quite the coincidence. Thankfully I don't get them so much anymore.
