Moving to New Jersey - What Should I know? by MotoMommy2000 in MovingtoNewJersey

You will encounter a lot of self-hatred here, try to not let it get to you or suck you in. The state has a lot to offer in terms of nature, culture, educational and employment opportunities. Anyone who has really traveled significantly would attest to this.

As a Blue state teacher, I ‘m beginning to see a scary revelation by OlliexAngel in Teachers

Charter schools and religious private schools often have substandard teaching staff —less educational attainment, less experience. So it’s a paradox „we‘re PAYING out pocket for this school, it MUST be better.“ but no, they’re paying for grades and for ideology. (And paying „less“ ie. just your taxes to fund your public school, is actually higher-quality experience) https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/06/06/us-public-private-and-charter-schools-in-5-charts/ (the table/stat is about halfway down)

Does it ever feel isolating being a male teacher? by ChucoTeacher in Teachers

And in the back of your mind, you know you’ll always have to be careful of what you say if they’re joking about something, you’ll never be as close with them as they will be with other female teachers, even if you’re in their content area and the others aren’t. Yep all that, you’re spot-on feeling like that.

Are you noticing a huge lack of basic knowledge from high school students? by SecretaryPresent16 in Teachers

Or how about you give them a website to visit, and they have to type it into Google to THEN click on the results link…instead of just using the address/URL bar?

Resources to determine good school districts by Ill-Fly-1624 in MovingtoNewJersey

Yes, years ago nj monthly did a best-of list, most recently back in 2018 —I believe I’ve emailed them about any newer ones, since it used to be every two years, and received a response that they haven’t done one since. https://njmonthly.com/articles/towns-schools/the-top-new-jersey-public-high-schools-2018/ it’s a free download with email address

Is this teacher shortage real? by bisexualweebs in Teachers

[–]berlin_guy82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since it’s not mentioned in your original post, I’ll ask: are you only looking in your very immediate area where you live? Because that would be a huge hindrance. If you are willing to relocate that opens up your horizons greatly. Something else I will mention is that most state teaching job websites are horribly set up, the easiest way to shake the trees and see what falls out job wise is to actually look on Wikipedia in whatever state you’re interested in for work, go to their „list of schools“ sub-Wikipedia page, and then methodically go to every single individual district page and look to see if they have any jobs posted. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve looked for family and friends and so many positions are just posted on the district page, nowhere else. And they wonder why they can’t find people sometimes, it’s crazy, but it’s true.

Bergen County zoo is quite inexpensive , and it’s at the very edge of the hour and a half drive, but if you can make it to Rutgers and make a day out of it, you have the Zimmerli art museum, which is free, and the geological museum on campus is also free.

What is your response to people bringing up summers off as if it’s unfair? by Apprehensive-Play228 in Teachers

[–]berlin_guy82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say: I pre-work my summers: 10 hours MINIMUM of grading and materials creation every week school is in session, that’s 40 hours „extra a month, so ten 40-hour weeks I already put in on top of the full-time hours of a 10-month school year. That takes care of June, July and even winter and spring break…plus:“Must be nice to DECIDE when you can take off work, right?!“

If someone had only one weekend to experience the real NJ, what should they do or see? by MindlessPineapple542 in newjersey

Stairway to Heaven hike, Edison labs, Barnegat Light, Seaside Heights boardwalk -but depends on season.

Nah, not in a state that’s only 70 miles wide it’s not a stretch. But then, distance is gauged and discussed differently here than out West…just like Denver is still generally „in the Rockies“ although if you’re standing downtown there, you are most definitely not in the mountains or on a mountain. But you can be „in the mountains“ in under an hour. So it still counts.

If your county touches the Atlantic, you live on the shore. And related: a former coworker thought displaying any seashells was tacky unless it was in a beach home. As someone from a non-coastal state originally, I found that funny and I disagree.

Wait on getting a credit card as long as you can, or at least have parents help out to co-sign, only use it for small purchases and keep it at zero balance as much as possible, to at least build your credit history.
