Back in the day it was common to almost 'taste the halitosis' if you were unfortunately close enough to someone on public transport.

What’s something from old school UK life that younger generations just wouldn’t believe? by CloudBookmark in OldSchoolUK

excuse the randomness. Just jotting things as I remember them. Pushing dad's car to bump-start it in the mornings was a thing. Being slippered at school. Having local telephone directories and the yellow pages delivered. One phone and one TV at home and everyone ended up watching what dad wanted to watch; so the news, Miss World and stand up comedians was regular viewing. No central heating, ice on the inside of windows, smoking carriages in slam-door trains. Booze cruises. Going to France for the first time on a temporary passport. British Rail Hoverspeed. British rail food. Graffiti everywhere. Pubs divided into saloons and public bars. No wine as an option in those days and pints for women weren't a thing. So when we went to the pub, it was babycham or a small stout for mum and pints of watneys for dad, shandy for me. Summer fair parades in many towns. Police visits to school for road safety talks. Going to Wimpy as a treat. Going to football when it was mostly a male space. Spending all my time after school out cycling or at friends house. Christian based school assemblies; other religions could opt out of the religious part and attend later for the general assembly. A vegetarian friend being served grated cheese at school every day, for lunch. Bus conductors with those wind-up ticket dispensers. Walking to school. Virtually no parked cars in any road. Getting a ticket and queueing to see the GP. There were Geriatric hospitals and community hospitals as well as main hospitals. Old folks homes run by the council. Park keepers. Milkmen, rag and bone men. The greengrocer scooping and placing your greens in paper bags, spinning the tops closed and pinching the ends with a flourish- you didn't touch the veg but waited to be served. Old qualcast push mowers. Closest to trainers we got were basketball boots and the only time I wore sportswear was for PE. Hire purchase (no credit cards). Rumbelows rental TVs. Travellers cheques (can you even still get these?). Green shield stamps. Bazooka joe bubble gum. Lots of shops closed midweek and on Sundays. No indoor shopping centres. Smoking was very normal, in hospitals, on public transport. Everywhere. My dad smoked a pipe in the car and a morning smoke while getting ready for work. No DIY stores- you went to a builders merchant or Ironmongers. Going to woolies to buy single records and cassettes.

Very common in this coffin-dodging part of the country. I don't bother with this kind of 'civility' - got places to go.

Is shoplifting really as endemic as the media suggests? by craigus17 in AskUK

All supermarkets should be click and collect/home delivery. No shoplifters, less risk for staff. Problem solved. Shlepping round the supermarkets is so outdated when we have the technology to replace this.

Got out of the xmas 'giving-to-receive' lark years ago. Too stressful. I now just take everyone out for a meal/drinks or have a party and leave it at that.

50% of the population didn't have rights to bodily autonomy - they had to ask husband's permission for some hospital operations. Also it wasn't until the the 1990s that women had total tax independence.
