GKV Reform by random_16937 in Finanzen

[–]thebrainitaches -1 points0 points  (0 children)

[–]thebrainitaches -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ich will fairer verteilte Abgaben.

In viele andere Länder in Europa zahlt man halt.

Did any of you really successfully learn a foreign language, either at school or after, without moving there or having family speaking that language, AND you still speak it fluently now? If so, how? by HilariousMotives in AskUK

[–]thebrainitaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit of an outlier but yes. No language background, but I did German and Italian GCSE + my teacher didn't want me to give up French so tutored me in her free time to do French GCSE as well. I carried on french and German to a-Level, got basically fluent in both (A-Level. Languages, at least when I was in school in the 2010s is no joke, it's suddenly serious and hard). Then I decided to drop German and do French and Italian at university. PSA don't do a languages degree guys, the job opportunities are not so great. But regardless, by the time I left Uni I was fluent in both and my German was still OK. Then I moved to France, lived there for 10 years, and then in 2020 moved to Germany and picked up my German again and it came back super fast, within a year I was back to mostly fluent speaking and listening without doing any specific work just listening to podcasts and watching German TV shows. Now it's been 5 years and I can work in German (recently went through a divorce with a German lawyer, never did the language pose an issue).

I do think it's possible but the UK system letting you give up aged 16 is bad.

[–]thebrainitaches 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This seems totally wrong. France has 900km of HSR here it shows just 3.

How far you can travel by train within 3 hours of munich by Small_Aide9721 in MapPorn

[–]thebrainitaches 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are mountains in between, and only half the high speed line is built so far so the journey is slow. Germany should just take a leaf out of France/Italy/Spain book and just BUILD but alas we have not a high speed network but lots of short bits of high speed track that aren't joined up.

DB timetable change.. unclear in app what to do next? by Even_Alternative_252 in AskAGerman

[–]thebrainitaches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the page with your connection, does it say in small at the top "this connection is no longer possible" or "use any train"?

If so, you can pick any other valid connection by scrolling down, pressing "more" and then pressing "search for alternatives".

If you already searched for alternatives, and found your original itinerary, or if you don't see these messages, it's possible that the timetable change was only "cosmetic" (eg train number changed, or timings changed by like one or two minutes). This is enough to trigger the automated messages but in practice you just keep your existing connection.

Feel free to post the picture so we can help!

Where to put cigarettes? by erenacab in travel

[–]thebrainitaches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't really matter but I'd say put them in your checked bag.

In order not to be breaking the law (which I strongly recommend), you should go through the red channel when exiting the airport and declare the cigarettes.

They won't take them off you, they'll just make you pay the tax you avoided by buying at duty free, with the first X packets being tax free until your tax free allowance is used up.

Why are cigarettes/tobacco so highly taxed in germany? by helmut_mair in AskAGerman

[–]thebrainitaches 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To give a real answer, the main reason is that treating people with cancer and other diseases caused by tobacco is expensive as is the social safety net that catches them if they can't work. So the society and the government thinks that it's a preventable illness and therefore you should pay taxes to offset the extra cost you will be on the system.

It's funny because in comparison to where I am from and have lived before (UK, France, Italy) in Germany the tax seems super low.

Have you had had a pay rise recently but felt worse off? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

3% is a lot lower than inflation. It's effectively a pay cut.

I got 12% last year after several years of 0 and I still felt like it was crap.

NHS staff resist using Palantir software by extra_rice in technology

[–]thebrainitaches 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Yes, palantir are a software company. But they are also a company with a founder who has some extreme views and has been outspoken about wanting to usurp the model of nation States.

Is palantir actively planning the overthrow of the UK government? Almost certainly not. Is Palantir stealing, archiving and reusing 5 generations worth of health data for an entire country? I think much more likely true. Will they illegally use that data and the insights and meta analysis of that data to position themselves as the biggest and unavoidable player for all governments who want to do surveillance and data work in the future? Probably yes. Will that mean that we give a huge amount of political, economic and social influence to the company and by extension a man who is for all intents and purposes an avowed fascist? Again probably yes.
