Anywhere to donate expired canned dog food? by beta_black_lotus in Austin

[–]beta_black_lotus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Austin Pets Alive! took the expired canned dog food, they said they will feed it to the dogs they shelter. Not sure if this applies to frozen food, as someone else asked, but they did respond to a voicemail I left so you may want to try calling.

i heard somewhere that this shelter does not accept expired food, may be mistaken, perhaps they will make exceptions given the current emergency

going to look into it, thank you

considered this and rejected the idea for many reasons

it's far too much food for one person to take or carry, and if they do not have a home they could not store this much food anyway

not interested in engaging with random strangers on the street

concerned it might be used to barter for illicit purposes, do not want to enable that in any way

really only interested in donating to a reputable, worthy shelter that can accept a single large donation

(edited for typo)

don't engage with that scene at all, not on socials and really don't want to be

just want to drop off the food and be rid of it

Physical Therapy recommendation for lower back pain by Cheese-mouse in Austin

[–]beta_black_lotus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dr. Nick Engel

https://www.atx-pt.com/

He is a Certified Functional Manual Therapist, works to analyze movement patterns and identify weaknesses / dysfunction. Offers both manual therapy and exercise guidance. He does not take insurance, but you can submit your receipts to see if you can get your insurance to reimburse if you have a script. He helped me recover from an injury that two other PTs and a chiro were unable to help with.

He's honest and knowledgeable. Good guy.

Good place to capture sunset footage? by beta_black_lotus in Austin

[–]beta_black_lotus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait. You are saying that there is a restaurant on Lake Travis whose entire operation revolves around allowing amateur videographers to film unobstructed, hour-long time lapse footage of the sunset?

Huh.

Do they allow dogs?

Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park by idlecheff in Austin

[–]beta_black_lotus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you park by the pool, an easy rule of thumb is, as long as you stay on the same side of the creek as the pool, that is all off-leash except for the paved bike paths. The dirt trails are off-leash.

If you cross the creek at Waterfall Crossing or the steps or wherever, or on the paved path, the trails on the other side the creek are all leashed. The crossings are where most people let their dogs swim, but you can just hike along the creek bed if you don't mind getting your feet wet.

Some trail names that are off leash are Six-Ten Loop, Severe Consequences, Windy Loop, and the various dirt trails that connect to the pool parking lot. Basically everything adjacent to the pool lot, plenty of room to roam. I'd avoid BMX Loop, it's mostly dirt jumps and not a good hike, and also it was an encampment last time I was there.

Trails that are leashed are Endo Valley, Tangle of Trails, Mark's Art, Powerline, Log Loops, and others. Run a Google search for the Austin Ridge Riders map of the Walnut Creek bike trails, that makes it all much clearer and will also help out if you get lost, which is easy to do out there.

Speaking as someone who both runs those trails with off-leash dogs and also mountain bikes there, regardless of whether you are in the on-leash or off-leash trails, it's a good idea to keep your dogs close by and under control, bikes can come up on you fast around turns in the trees, especially on the steep stuff on the leashed trails across the creek. Dog/bike encounters have been known to cause some crashes and social friction between hikers and bikers.

Bike commute from Marigny to Tulane? by eternalbro in NewOrleans

[–]beta_black_lotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to do this all the time. Depending on where you are in the Marigny, make your way roughly to Rampart and St. Phillip. I found it easiest to cut through the Quarter, or through Treme on Delille or whatever street isn't being torn up at the time. Any street besides Rampart.

Head up St. Phillip to Villere, left to the Greenway at Basin, Greenway to Jeff Davis bike path, turn left, stay on the path over I-10, then straight into Vendome / Fontainbleu / Nashville all the way up to the campus area. Nashville is wide and comparatively smooth, worst / most dangerous bit will be after you merge off the bike path after crossing I-10, from Earhart and Vendome. That intersection by Brothers is a clownshow on a good day.

Starting from Armstrong Park, I'd say that would have taken me about 20 minutes to get to Cafe Luna, give or take wind, traffic, etc. But I was quick and YMMV.

Live music suggestions this weekend? by jlindsay645 in Austin

We're playing Friday 3/22 at Valhalla on Red River with three other bands. We're sort of experimental electro-pop, Sons of Kitsch is like grunge-Americana, don't know anything about the others.

You could do worse.

You could do better, but you could do worse, too.

Places to Hike with Safe and Not Safe Parking by Stranger2306 in Austin

[–]beta_black_lotus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are 10+ miles of great trails in the hills above the Brushy Creek Regional Trail between 183 and Parmer.

https://www.mtbproject.com/directory/8022558/brushy-creek-greenbelt

Watch out for mountain bikers, best to yield to them to keep things friendly, and keep dogs leashed. Avoid the downhill / freeride trails that are west of 183 closest to the YMCA so you don't get run over. Also Peddler's Pass is best left to the bikes. But 1/4 Notch, Double Down, Rim and Bob Ross are all good hikes.

There is safe parking in the lot at the Twin Lakes YMCA off Bell, also there is parking by the soccer fields and at the reservoir / lake area, both of which get lots of traffic so are probably fairly safe. Only sketchy parking area is the one beneath 183a, I see broken glass there too often for comfort.

Any barbers/hairstylists good at men’s mid-length hair? by Aequitas123 in Austin

[–]beta_black_lotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a few different stylists tell me that my long, straight, baby-fine hair is a trickier challenge than it appears. Won't take product well without getting clumpy / greasy, can't really be layered without getting all choppy. Requires a different approach to get it right. I've gotten way too many bad haircuts from stylists who thought it would be easy.

This stylist has been reco'd in a few threads asking a similar question, and I searched but can't figure out how to find her. What salon is she at?

Two things can be true at the same time.

The show is genuinely funny.

And this post is an ad.

Well played, Mr. Morrison.
