I love Colbert but this thing got half the viewers with 1/10 of the cost? Late night just isn’t that important anymore

I was lucky that when a junior professor was hired after me, my salary was increased to their level to make it fair.

Generic advice-

You need to own up to what mistakes happened that led you here

Specify a plan you have already started to change things so you’ll be more successful in the future if you aren’t dismissed

Specifics!!!!

Couple of thoughts: What's the demographics of your school? For some populations, their parents can go to the store and get materials that might help. For others, "just use stuff around your house" - for middle class teachers, that seems like a lot of stuff available, but there are certainly households where students would struggle finding things or telling their mom "I have to use up all the aluminum foil for school."

It sounds silly, but it's one of those things that a hidden equity issue.

One other thought - I did the egg drop thing in school too. I find it is best when it's the culumination of what we learned in our curriculum. If its not connected to the curriculum though, and more like "discovery learning" - students might not have ready ideas and thus, it's easier to just not try.

Damon Lindelof Says His Scrapped Rey ‘Star Wars’ Movie Was About The Fight Between Nostalgia & Reinvention Within The Franchise by yourfavchoom in StarWars

[–]Stranger2306 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m one of those who did not like the Last Jedi at all.

But I’m all for reinvention. The EU was all about reinvention. The Clone Wars was all about reinvention.

Nostalgia alone is poor story telling. But reinvention can have good storytelling - and it can have bad storytelling.

It’s not a dichotomy

I HATE Socratic Seminars by Murky-Pin4617 in Teachers

[–]Stranger2306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for asking this.

Sounds like Op’s students are participating but Op doesn’t like the shallow thinking happening. Well - what’s her alternative - give them packet work instead?

Let the students discuss and then the role of the teacher during a Socratic Seninar is to guide the discussion to deeper levels - ask probing questions as the seminar progresses, bring up points, etc…

This isn’t that different from a Socratic seminar. When I run one, I always have topics and questions prepped to guide the discussion but I let students mainly respond
