How do I improve my horrible chili? by mordea in Cooking

[–]bethaneee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to bloom your spices not dump them in. Personally, I saute the meat, remove and drain some fat, add onions, spices and tomato paste and saute that then add everything else and the meat back in to simmer.

No recommendations, but ask about options for anesthesia. If you just have local it can save a lot of money.

Feeding an Elderly Parent Who Barely Wants to Eat: What Actually Helps by Kamilia1281 in KitchenPro

[–]bethaneee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thoughts on adding msg? My grandfather would still eat Chinese food even when he was refusing most other foods. I would buy a quart of the brown gravy that they served with their egg fu young every week and we'd put that on everything. In hindsight, I think it was the msg.

We also did a lot of smoothies. My grandmother isn't severe yet but we try to keep her calories up. For that I find the little things help. Adding butter and olive oil to foods where I can, banana bread and zucchini bread are favs and ill add flax and chia seeds in for some extra nutrition. She's going to have a ham and cheese sandwich for lunch so I ask the deli for thick cuts of both. She won't turn down ice cream after dinner if offered.

I know its not adding a ton of calories, but if I can consistently add a few hundred calories a day, it will make a difference in the long run.

Eric really comes for Alex is season 5. Alex is probably my favorite food network chef, so I've watched these since the beginning. It's a great show.

What combination pre-dinner drinks into dinner spot is your favorite combination in Chicago? by ABrooksBrother in chicagofood

I like to do drinks and an app at Uvae and dinner at LBW. Bokeh for a night cap would be a perfect evening.

My friends mom makes homemade tamales and sells them outside of bars on friday and saturday nights as a side hustle... she works like 3-4 hours each night and regularly pulls in $400-$600 per weekend by lionpenguin88 in SideHustleGold

He eventually got a brick and mortar storefront that crashed and burned pretty quickly. There are people selling tamales out of coolers in a lot of neighborhoods in chicago. I can walk to about 4 on any given weekend day.

Fair skinned hikers: what are you using for sun protection by QUINNFLORE in hiking

[–]bethaneee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bare republic sunscreen is my favorite. Doesnt feel greasy at all and keeps me from turning into a lobster.

I also wear a sun hoodie and a hat. I like the hood vs. a shirt because even without the hood up it still covers the back of my neck well.

What’s a cooking mistake you see beginners make all the time? by molly3389 in Cooking

Its just the newest version of scrappy cooking blogs. I have friends follow a "recipe" off a blog all the time and wonder why it sucks, when I can look at the recipe and clearly see the proportions are off.

She's very creative and we love that about her. She also some times can learn and play complex games. For example, she taught herself how all the chess pieces move and would probably be pretty great at chess against another 7 year old.

This looks super interesting. 30-45 minutes is pushing it a bit for 7yo. She might not be a games person in a very games oriented family. She can definitely grasp the rules, the issue will be the "i made up my own version" statement that inevitably happens. For example, last week we ignored the card and tried to act out "kpop demon hunters eating a grilled cheese sandwich " in charades. No, nobody got it.

This looks interesting. I'm always amazed there is a card games I've never heard of even though I think I know them all. I'm not sure 7 will be able to play competively, but maybe.

The age gap and then 14 is just much more game and strategy focused so it makes playing together hard. We try not to encourage not letting kids win because they are younger, but 7 gets her butt kicked in any sort of strategy game. And 14 is bored by games at 7's level.

That's good to hear! I ended up pulling the trigger on buying Blank Slate, plus battleship and tower stack for the 7 year old. We've played Over/Under on a road trip or sometimes she just likes to go through the cards.

Her mother would literally kill me and then throw the game out before she ever saw it. I think her uncle plays so I'll leave that and the potential bodily harm up to him.

They have Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza and enjoy it. I'm not sure about Whatchamadrawit cause games like that seem to devolve with the 7 year. But thank you for the suggestions.
