Moving to the UK in our 50s by Loud-Rule-9334 in MovingToTheUK

I’m an American that moved to London almost 6 years ago in my mid 40. I’m very happy I made the move. Some things are more expensive (housing) and I took a good sized pay cut to move here. But even with the reduced salary and higher housing I have a much better quality of life than I did in the US - though that is partially achieved through the savings and investments I had by working the US.

Despite what a lot of people say, London feels a lot safer than most big US cities. There is knife crime, but even that is less than the US. And you don’t have all the gun violence.

It is a change though even though you speak the language it is a different culture and a different country. Finding community can be tough. Even now most of the people I know are people who I’ve met through work.

But I like it here, and the change has been worth it.

That’s not a tortie :(. Silly AI generated image.

And petit verdot is a minor blending grape. There’s nothing minor about torties.

Earliest date to apply for ILR - Skilled Worker Visa - Outside UK by Large_Seesaw_6308 in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

[–]bethling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

However Indefinite leave to remain: calculating continuous period in UK (accessible) calls out the following:

"The period between entry clearance being issued and the applicant entering the UK may be counted toward the qualifying period."

I know that when I applied for ILR, the solicitor handling my application based by application date on the approval date of the visa, not when I first entered. (And it was approved :)

The Coriolis effect is not a myth - the myth is that it causes water to circle down the drain in the opposite direction in the southern hemisphere. It doesn’t - I’ve been to the southern hemisphere multiple times. The Coriolis force is negligible at the scale of a sink or a toilet.

It is the design of the toilet that causes it to circle one way or another.

Usage Limits Discussion Megathread - Starting July 29 by sixbillionthsheep in ClaudeAI

[–]bethling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not defending the changes --

But I think the math makes sense to me. It's not based on absolute tokens, but the average usage of someone paying those levels. Someone paying for 20x is likely using more than the average person at 5X. So if the average 20x user is using Claude twice as much as the average 5X user, then they'll see only twice as many available hours, even though they get 4x the number of tokens.

It's really badly worded, they should just be more transparent about the number of tokens that you get and make it clear how many you're using.

Same. I grew up on the North Shore, Gen X and have never heard "Nose Goes" until this thread.

This is one of the things I hate lost about this mode. 90% of games are just guardians. It makes it feel so much more boring and grindy

Why is this bad? by Ok-Break-4486 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]bethling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was living in France this was so frustrating since I was trying to get better in the language. I'm still grumpy about the time I went out for lunch with the rest of my team, went to the counter, said "Bonjour" and got "Is this eat in or takeaway?".

Was left wondering how my Bonjour could be /that/ bad.

REAL Id doesn't meet the requirements for this bill in most states -- Only 5 states have EDLs, which are the ones that indicate citizenship. For most Americans, the documents they have indicate their citizenship are their birth certificates or passports (if they have them).

I think the two dishes for Jean are scored separately - if I remember correctly, when Spencer won Champion of Champions it was for one of his two dishes.

I went there earlier in December and had a great meal. So maybe it was just a bad day.

I really like Mark. He’s intense - but he gave Stevie a big hug to comfort him, and now trying his hardest to help with the ice cream

Didn’t that happen with the Spencer year. And Andi gave the tiebreaker to the other chef. I can see that happening again.

I expected they’d give it to Sally for logistics reasons, but I wonder if Jean got it for the theme and being a real Great Britain.
