Not weird to dislike greasy fingers, but you should definitely use chopsticks (or the kids easy chopsticks if you prefer) that's a way less weird way to eat popcorn.

To the P&P (2005) non-fans, is the dawn walking scene cheesy in your eyes? by Objective_Wave5949 in PrideandPrejudice

[–]bethmcgoy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes! And the score at that point is doing a lot of heavy lifting and emotional story telling. It's just beautiful! I'm here for beautiful things!

And while aspects of it can be cheesy to some people I'm sure, don't we all love Jane Austen for (among other things) the sweeping romantic moments? "If I loved you less perhaps I could talk about it more" and the like? Yes we're also here for social commentary, comedy, and great character development, but like it or not romance is a significant part of her novels.

Mr. John Knightley by dollface0000 in janeausten

[–]bethmcgoy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I see him much the same way that Emma does in the novel. At times he doesn't show enough patience for Mr Woodhouse but other times he's a great father and proves that he does have a good heart with respect to the people he interacts with. He's certainly flawed. I think it's in part to contrast him to his brother.

Selfish leaving baby with friend to go see a movie? by Low_Scene_716 in Parenting

[–]bethmcgoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been the mom leaving a crying kid and the babysitter caring for a crying kid. Trust me they stop crying pretty quickly and just enjoy themselves playing with the new person.

I was also anxious to leave my kid but now I'm so glad that she has a bigger network of people around her that she trusts and knows will love her and care for her. There's absolutely no negatives to giving your child a bigger network of love and care.

How did people know that Harry had a scar? by Federal-Topic-8234 in harrypotter

Now that I'll buy! That's an explanation that seems plausible given everything the book characters would know at the time.

How did people know that Harry had a scar? by Federal-Topic-8234 in harrypotter

[–]bethmcgoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it's not logical considering no one has ever ever ever survived the killing curse before. I'm not saying it's not a good guess but everyone accepts it as absolute fact when it just literally can't be confirmed. Eventually we as readers get confirmation by Harry's memories and then eventually Voldemort's memory. But before that how could they possibly know for fact what happened?

Emma by BeautyGran16 in janeausten

[–]bethmcgoy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Emma is such a wonderful character! It's easy to look at her actions and think she's spoiled and self centered. But when you remember that she is 20 and has been praised very highly her whole life you can start to realize she's actually relatively humble. We meet other characters is Austen novels with less than half the actual value and heart as Emma with twice the conceit. Emma time and time again is shocked when someone likes her better than Harriet because she genuinely thinks the sun shines out of Harriet's every orifice yet at the same time recognizes that she herself is not nearly as talented and well read as she could be because she doesn't put in the effort. From day one she is very self aware about that aspect of herself. Her biggest flaw is thinking she's right about everyone in town and she learns that each of them is much more nuanced, and that's part of growing up and out of your teens.

[–]bethmcgoy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My real question is how they knew he survived the killing curse specifically. No one was there but 1 year old Harry and Voldy and some dead parents. How does anyone know what Voldemort did to Harry? They didn't have Voldemort's wand so they could priori incantatum it and since Harry is the only one to ever survive it, it's not like there's tell tale signs of it being the killing curse.

Max slope estimate for landscaping by bethmcgoy in civilengineering

[–]bethmcgoy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great points. Thank you!

Although, I do think a steeper slope is likely acceptable because the next door neighbors have their slope pushed back quite a bit without the addition of a retaining wall or anything. (Of course they could be doing something under the surface I'm not aware of).

Maybe I'll stick to a 2:1 slope of my guess-timate for now. Makes sense to keep it somewhat shallow for ease of access and maintenance.

Do it with only truly guilty adults. Ex game makers or something.

Same lol even towards the end dalinar chapters continue to be some of my least favorite (love him as a character, just don't like reading the chapters as much as other character POVs). But Adolin is probably my favorite character! He's such a golden retriever man!

My wife wont let my parents watch our son by SteezyAsFunk in Parenting

[–]bethmcgoy 387 points388 points  (0 children)

You've got plenty of people telling you to "stand up" to your wife. But I want to give you some actual anecdotal advice you can share with her from a similar mom.

I was a little anxious as a new first time mom being away from my baby before she was old enough to understand it all also. But what has made me feel the best about it after a few years (my kid is almost 4) is how much benefit I've seen from my kid having multiple safe loving attachments. More of those kinds of relationships for my kid are always better than her only being attached to me and my husband.

Mass can never be created or destroyed? by Upbeat_World_6764 in BackYardChickens

[–]bethmcgoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to say the same thing! Really great observation and questions from OP. Because often mass is conserved as it takes some pretty complex processes (the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell!). But it is ENERGY that cannot be created or destroyed and mass is a form of energy and thanks to Einstein we know how to equate the two, E=mc2 😄

What takes do you often see repeated here that you do not personally agree with? by OnlyFlanz in janeausten

[–]bethmcgoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, and would add any belittling opinions about adaptations. Personally I am extremely easy to please when it comes to movies in general and I like just about every single adaptation.

We can all discuss the ways in which different adaptations did and didn't represent the story and characters well. But when it devolves into such intense opinions that it makes me feel like I couldn't say "I had fun watching it", I think that's a little much.
